You can use the search tools to search the whole site, or search each forum and subforum, and even search within a thread for the info you're looking for. I'm not sure I would trust a single pdf that purported to be able to teach everything about biochemistry, or any other area of science for that matter. I'm afraid you'll have to dig.

To me, the circumstances leading to a need for affirmative action is like catching someone cheating at a race. In this instance you can't disqualify the runner, so you penalize him. It would be unethical to just say, sorry, we won't cheat from here on in, just allow us this lead we've got and we'll call it even. I've tried to explain it several ways. Are you going to continue using the same argument? No, because I don't view it the way you do, hence the reason I call affirmative action remedial. It rectifies a bad situation.

The link says the thighbone was too big to lift in their helicopter, so they broke it. If fossilization doesn't go completely through the bone, will other samples yield similar tissue? Could it be that other large bones may not be completely fossilized?

In Engineering, there is always a practical purpose. Disaster is rarely the purpose. I'm not sure wings could ever efficiently give enough lift to both lighten the vehicle in regards to fuel consumption and leave enough traction for maneuvering purposes. Cars already give up control the faster they go, why would you want to give up more control to save on fuel? Being alive to spend your savings should rank high on everyone's list.

It is the responsibility of every single person to end racism, gender bias and discrimination, imo. I'm in favor of integration wherever possible. I've seen many benefits in many areas when people are exposed to the ideas of diverse peoples. Over the years, discriminatory practices have led to over-representation by white males in our universities, in well-paid jobs, and in the various professions. The civil rights movement and the women's liberation movement have both revealed the inequalities prevalent in US society. I know you view affirmative action as discriminatory to white males, but remedial action is needed where the situation cannot correct itself on its own. Affirmative action levels the playing field by creating resources for women and people of color so they will have proportional opportunities in the job market so that merit can then truly be observed. Affirmative action only fuels discrimination and gender bias in your mind if that's the way you choose to view it.

You can bet that if biodiesel use gets to be widespread in the US, they'll figure a way to tax it and make it illegal to buy it from restaurants. That's just too economical and efficient.

Our laws may be written a little differently. There were all kinds of articles praising people who were doing chinese restaurants a favor by taking the contents of their oil traps and filtering them for use in diesel engines. I know diesel engines last longer than regular ones, but I heard that the free biodiesel fuels reduced their overall life.

Diesel engines can be made to burn lots of alternative fuels. There are kits available so you can filter used vegetable cooking oil (which you can get for free from many restaurants--they have to pay to have it hauled away) and burn that for fuel. The kits allow you to start your engine on diesel fuel, get it warmed up, then switch to vegetable oil. You just have to make sure you switch back to diesel before you shut your engine down so the lines have the richer fuel in them for the next time you start up. Necessity will drive the market toward alternatives. I remember back in 1968, the big US auto makers said there was absolutely no way for them to economically gear up to challenge Volkswagen. They claimed it would bankrupt them to retool to make compact cars. They also claimed Americans didn't want compact cars. When Datsun and Toyota came heavily into the US market in 1969, and Volkswagens sales skyrocketed, Detroit had the Pinto and the Vega ready by 1970. And it didn't hurt them a bit.

You're still in high school, and have little experience in the job market. Discrimination is out there, at every level, and I think something extra needs to be done because the honor system doesn't work when racism or gender bias is factored in. Actually, you are making that up. Just because I make reference to white males doesn't mean I assume affirmative action only favors blacks. I actually think gender problems are more prevalent out there in the job marketplace. I think we are definitely turning a corner on racial profiling when it comes to jobs. I also believe affirmative action programs are partially responsible. I see that since you saw malice in the question where none was intended' date=' you are obviously the type who screams reverse descrimination first. I guess I will never be able to debate this issue with you when what I see as a social program for promoting equality is viewed by you as stinking [b']revenge[/b]. Oh, and what a nice straw man you chose to close with!

I'm so glad that, as a privileged white male, you're all for equality. The point here is that you and I have had an easier walk than others. Affirmative action puts a bit more of a hill ahead of us to climb, but doesn't prevent us from climbing. It is a temporary compensation for a temporary inequality. Do you feel put out because things are a little tougher on you now? Perhaps you will learn how discrimination feels and never practice it on others.

My point exactly. The two cancel each other out. The dilemma is false and cannot be used in this debate. rolleyes Why should it be suspended when it hasn't been allowed to reach it's potential? Should Martin Luther King Jr's work have been suspended after his death? This is where I do trust the system. When the employment marketplace has a fairer amount of ethnic and gender diversity at all levels, when the playing field is level and merit can finally be the true gauge, affirmative action programs will be dismantled. It will happen because the white male workers will have spent enough time feeling what it is like. They will scream like the women and people of color screamed, and they will be heard. Part of my objection to dismantling the programs too soon is that all these objections of reverse discrimination are coming up. Of course white males are going to start bitching as soon as they can. We may need to go a little overboard to make sure the system is fair, the opportunities are even. Imo, the more empathy we can have for the plight of those who have been discriminated against for so long, the better our chances it won't happen again. There will always be those who take negative advantage of any program, those who will not rise up on their own if given a leg up. Let's not judge the whole system by those few. And let's not make the mistake of saying that because merit is the logical system that it is also the best system in a world where discrimination flies in the face of logic.

Effective? Am I to assume you want to destroy your magnet? High-impact is more effective in that you save on generated heat (except that which you generate by tjrowing), heating is more effective in that you don't beat up a surface by throwing a magnet against it.

No. Non-discriminatory laws have been in place for years and employers can get around them. False dilemma. You can't be sure that affirmative action is a wrongful act. You're making an assumption that fits your argument. No, it is a temporary correction of the current system which is heavily weighted in favor of white males. There is a difference, one which white males find difficult to see.

And leaving those prejudice problems up to the individual employer has worked well, in your white male opinion? I encourage government programs where individual initiative on the part of big business is not immediately profitable. I wouldn't want to relax laws against pollution, either.

I support affirmative action because I feel we need to overcompensate for our predilection for what is known and comfortable. If meritocracy were completely blind to gender, color and national origin, it would indeed be the best system, but it's not. Affirmative action helps those whose merit is hidden behind the prejudices of the company who thinks certain hires are safe, economical and predictable. I don't have any figures on it, but isn't it almost always quiet, normal, safe white male workers who go postal and shoot up everyone in the office?

It is pretty sick to pay $9 so some JD can throw popcorn at someone he knows 6 rows down. I don't like anything that takes me out of the moment during a movie. Some movies are worth the big screen hassles though. A great example of the perfect home movie experience is the TV series 24 on DVD. I can't imagine sitting through commercials or having to wait a week between episodes on network TV, but they were awesome to watch back-to-back with no interruptions on DVD. My buddy is just about finished watching the 3rd season and I get it next. It's also better when it's free!

I disagree. I think the first two (episodes IV and V) were brilliant. These were movies that were so cutting edge at the time, so far above anything else around, that people were waiting in 2 hour lines to see them. When they first came out there were no multiplex cinemas, so theatres were showing Star Wars exclusively, and fought to hold their copies for as long as they could. And people were going to see it over and over again. Not just two or three times, but 20-30 times or more (I saw the first one 12 times, each time with a different date--it was the best date movie of it's time). Episode IV set the hook, so to speak, and Episode V offered a wonderfully gloomy edge to the story and made the villains even more... villaneous. But attendance for V wasn't as good as IV and the toys sold so well that VI was tailored to an Ewokety cuteness level that didn't scare the 5-9 year-olds who were buying the toys. I felt in VI Lucas had sunk to a Disney-ish level that no longer separated him from the crowd. And after setting the bar, he has played it safe and profitable and has done nothing to raise the bar since. * edit * Why is an intermission so important to you? I think intermissions are a pain in the ass. LOTR was long enough to warrant one, but good enough to where you didn't mind not having one. Any movie that needs to have an intermission to give me a break isn't worth my time.
