Your ears can 'locate' the origin of sounds because the sound has to travel different paths to your two ears. Unless you are V van Gogh, I would think this is apparent.

IIRC, the 'doomsday clock' originally ( since 1945 ? ) considered only nuclear armageddon, but now includes many other threats to human existence. These other threats, such as Global Warming, global viral Pandemics, water and food shortages, etc., not only add to each other, and the overall threat level, but some of the threats are 'caused' by some of the others. Overall, the OP seems a 'glass half empty' excuse for a rant. Now is not the time for people to 'lose their sh*t'; it is a time for deliberate and calculated decisions. With a little 'glass is half full' optimism, good will, and the right decisions, this truly is a wonderful time to be alive.

Why don't you post the ingredients list of the salt you used, so we can possibly eliminate the salt as the source of the discoloration ? Better yet, why not be a good Italian, and stick to 'vino', rather than craft beers. I recommend a nice, and very drinkable, Aglianico from the Irpinia ( Campania ) region.

And I thought I lived in a rough neighbourhood. Always thought Iowa was a calm, almost boring state.

Evil is a social construct, and, while social behaviour is an evolutionary effect, there is no evidence that its constructs have have an evolutionary cause or impact. Not everything has an evolutionary aspect; some of the sh*t, we just made up.

The speed of light barrier is a 'bummer'. So much so that people, even scientists, are grasping at straws, trying to find ways around it. The 'semantic' approach notes the difference between moving through space, and moving with space. And it results in more problems than it solves.

Just do more fishing, and re-purpose the cooler for storing fish. Problem solved ...

Not much to add with my low opinion of R Paul, but even A Fauci has recently admitted that the possibility that SARS-COV2 may have escaped from the lab is there. We just don't have enough information yet, and we may never, as China s refusing to release records from WIV, and resisting further investigatio into the origins of the virus. The author of this piece has an obvious agenda against certai people, such as P Daszak and even A Fauci, but the details are factual and indicate circumstancial evidence for both, the virus jumping from bats to intermediate species and to humans naturally, or the engineered 'gain-of-function' and accidental ( or incompetent due to lax protocols ) escape from the Wuhan lab. Origin of Covid — Following the Clues | by Nicholas Wade | May, 2021 | Medium I don't necessarily agree with the author's conclusions, but do agree that more information is needed. And only China can supply that information. It is also a lengthy and informative but easy to understand article on virology and the rationale behind 'gain-of-function' research, which B Obama tried to stop ( IIRC ), but D Trump re-instituted.

As exchemist explains, there is a fundamental reason for such types of machines not to work. But, on a practical level, how do you extract power from the free-floating fans ? You have removed the bearing that drives them, but you still need a physical connection, such as bearing/shaft, to extract power. Even using airflow generated by free-floating fans generates friction/heat in the airflow, so you are no further ahead. In any system with a continuous symmetry there is a corresponding conserved quantity ( Noether's theorem ). If the Lagrangian does not change over time, total energy is conserved.

My thoughts on the OP ... What does it mean, Alex, when you 'notice' the race ( for lack of a better word ), and the culture of people you congregate with, and feel the need to modify your behaviour to accomodate the circumstances ? This is regardless of whether you modify your behaviour to accomodate them, or to accomodate yourself. Maybe some day we can get away from even noticing the differences whic divide us into races, ethnicities, cultures and other such groups.

Personally, and regardless of sex, I think it should be a rectifier between the AC and the DC. But if I had suggested that when they were still together, Angus would have hit me over the head with his guitar.

I find it quite annoying that you can criticise the speck in the mods' eyes; they are human after all, and we all have some biases. Yet you refuse to cknowledge the tree trunk in your eyes, that stubbornly refuses to follow rules for discussion, present evidence to support your position, and acknowledge evidence presented against your conjecture, evidence which supports current accepted theories. There used to be an old saying along those liines. I think you'll find it in Matthew 7.5 in the King James version of the Bible.

Don't remember much about mathematical spaces, but there are several differing examples of physical spaces also. You can define space as a certain height above Earth's atmosphere, and even then there are several qualifiers for the space between planets, stars and galaxies, as interplanetary, interstellar, or intergalactic space. The space where all possible states of a system are represented as unique points, is called a phase space. And, of course, the space represented by X, Y, and Z co-ordinates, once a co-ordinate system ( cartesian in this case, but there are many others ) is assigned to a volume. I'm sure there are many more, and I don't really have a problem with the different definitions. If one qualifies which definition they are using, even a newly made-up one, so that we are all on the same page, we can engage in a fruitful discussion. Often many non-math or non-science noobs will use a wrong definition, and they are often asked what they mean by such a term, as it is non-standard.

Just noticed this, Studiot. First I had to look up what a 'clapper' bridge design is 😳 . Once I had done that, I would say that the first Neolithic designer used science to observe how people could step from stone to stone when traversing shallow waters, and then came up with the idea that if the stones are too distant, why not drop wooden boards, or tree trunks, between them to 'bridge' the distance. The second person to build one, applied this observational science, and, as engineers often do, optimized the construction, using flat-top pillars on which he may have rested wooden boards, or even concrete slabs, eventually.

Not that I was proposing an increase in hostilities, but some people ( those directly affected by the violence ) probably do. On both sides.

The universe is flat? (split from Time for a different view)
MigL replied to MPMin's topic in Astronomy and Cosmology
Sorry Geordief. I was sleepy last night and not thinking clearly. Of course it is relaed to the 360o of a circle.o The maximal triangle would be two half circumferences, in orthogonal planes. And disregard what I said about 'approaching 360o, I was 'looking at the wrong plane; it would be exactly 360o ( for the maximal triangle ). -

It approaches 360o. Thae sphere would have to be infinitely large for the pole angle to be 180o. So, no connection, I would think. -

MigL replied to MPMin's topic in Astronomy and Cosmology
For the surface of a sphere ( positive curvature ), 360o is correct; formad by two right angles at the equator, and a 180o at the pole. You can see that any angle at the pole would make the total greater than 180o, as all equatorial angles are 90o. I'm not sure about higher dimensional positively curved spaces. If by ( open ) curved space, you mean a negatively curved, saddle shaped space, then the minimum total angles would approach zero. -
So, assume the Israeli response has been 5-fold to the original Hamas offense. Your argument is, that hasn't worked, maybe Israel should try 1-fold ( proportional ) response. Others might argue 5-fold hasn't worked, maybe the response should be 10-fold, or even 20-fold, to emphasize the point.

MigL replied to MPMin's topic in Astronomy and Cosmology
As we can't seem to agree on the concept of 'parallel lines', let's just say that a triangle will have angles that add up to 180o in a 'flat' universe, or alternatively, the Pythagoras theorem has equivalent unit multipliers for each of the three squared terms ( this is also useful for higher dimensional spaces ). As to whether a 'flat' universe is infinite ... Of course. If it wasn't, it would need to have an 'edge'. ( and that is non-sensical ) -
Iran should tread carefully. It is common knowledge that they fund Hamas, and are a major factor for the instability of the area, If push comes to shove, and Israel feels threatened by Iran, we might see the nuclear option being used again. And what is this crap about proportional response ? That's not how deterrence works ! If you punch me, and the only thing I can do is punch you back, you might still go ahead and punch me. But, if the response to you harming me is much, much, worse, you may reconsider your actions.

So Israel is defined by their intractable, violent nature, and would fail as a nation if they took the first step towards peace? Sorry Phi. Either you misunderstood, or I wasn't clear enough. If the Palestinians lay down their weapons there will be a somewhat workable peace, as there will be no need for Israeli aggression. If the Israelis lay down their weapons, they will be at the mercy of their Arab neighbours, like Iran, Syria, etc. How long do you think they'll last ??? They are homemade. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Qassam_rocket You are kicking the can down the road, Sensei. Where does the explosive material come from ? Where do the ingredients to make explosive material come from ? Where does the solid propellant come from ? These, and most Nitrates, are not household substances. Yet there are complaints that medical supplies, and essentials for life, are not getting through the border checkpoints? Maybe spend some of the effort to deliberately smuggle in explosives and rocket propellant to improve people's lives. That would be a start in the right direction.

Don;t know about V Putin and any interests he might have in the area. But certainly other actors are thinly veiled. Just exactly how do 3350 rockets ( and counting ) get into Gaza, when the borders are tightly controlled, yet people argue for the relaxation of those controls.
