Of the people involved in the study, who got infected with Coronavirus, 90-95% received the placebo. But 5 -10 people who received the actual vaccine treatment were also infected. IOW, a small group of infected people from a large group of test subjects. But as infections go up in the US, much clearer results should soon be available

Using pattern recognition to avoid bad people
MigL replied to drumbo's topic in Psychiatry and Psychology
But if 10% of the general population are part of an organized crime gang ( my numbers may be skewed because a lot of my acquaintances are Italian ), yet 50% bearded, tattooed bike riders are, why should this valuable piece of statistical information be ignored ? Of course the 'targeting' must be followed up by rigorous investigation and the weighing of evidence. Of course being told, or simply assuming, that someone is bad isn't good enough. But we are supposed to be scientific thinkers; why would we ignore information because it doesn't suit our sensibilities ( see the above quip regarding Italians' crime connections ) -
Effects of a Tipler Cylinder on the Preternatural
MigL replied to Anchovyforestbane's topic in Speculations
Doesn't that essentially mean the absence of exotic matter with negative energy ? -
Of the four leading ( Western ) contenders, I'm not sure if taking more than one will be beneficial. They all seem to get the same result through slightly different means. The four leading Western COVID-19 vaccines (not from Asia) are all "expression-based," meaning that they introduce into the patient's cells the genetic code for a modified spike protein that can't trigger into the post-fusion form (After the virus enters the cell). The Pfizer/BNT and Moderna are mRNA vaccines, AstraZenica/Oxford is a ChAdOx1-vectored vaccine, and the Johnson and Johnson/Jansen is an Adenovirus 26-vectored vaccine. I think all require at least one booster within 3 weeks, and possibly yearly ( ? ) boosters thereafter. I was originally thinking the same thing; if one vaccine gives you 90%, adding another, even with diminishing returns, would get you 95%, and a third might get you to 97%, and so on. But, if initial results pan out, they can get 90%, and start ramping up production/distribution in early 2021, we should be enjoying life again by early summer. Most vaccinations are not even close to 100% ( Polio is, and measles at 97% ), but even at 70-80%, they have allowed us to control various diseases so that we don't even worry about them anymore. Of course there will be people who cannot take the vaccines ( babies, children, allergic reactions, etc. ? ); and then there's the anti-Vaxxers ... edit CharonY may have more ( accurate ) information

Effects of a Tipler Cylinder on the Preternatural
MigL replied to Anchovyforestbane's topic in Speculations
Any Tipler cylinder les than infinitely long will require exotic matter/negative energy to allow CTCs, exactly as wormholes do. Neither infinitely long cylinders, nor exotic matter with negative energy, appear to be practical. Or souls, and the afterlife, for that matter. -
Using pattern recognition to avoid bad people

I just love posting videos... The video quality is bad, but the tune 'rocks'. ( could have posted J Black's version from School of Rock ) -
The brain does think in steps However, some people can think many more steps ahead than others. Think of chess Grandmasters who think 6-8 moves ahead. It would be a real letdown if you get all the ingredients for your omelet together, turn on the stove, grab a pan, bowl and spoon, and then realize you don't have a dish to serve/eat it on because you could only think 3 steps ahead, not four.

Sounds almost like GR ... Einstein incorporated two mechanisms into his theory; at the time, he thought mistakenly. One part is a geometric field, which manifests as space-time curvature, and is responsible for test masses following curved geodesics such that masses seem to 'attract' each other. This is a simplification that ignores many other effects. The other part, he 'tacked on' as the Cosmological Constant, and it may be responsible for increasing separation between galaxies/clusters and universal expansion. As we are not quite sure, it is commonly known as Dark Energy.

D Trump is a bad example to use. He would have ran as a Democrat if they would have had him. And Republicans were dumb enough to take him. His political party is 'Self Serving Opportunist'.

According to Wiki, the blue shift of the Hydrogen line frequency indicates a relative motion of about 10 km/sec towards us. So they are already coming for us !!! ( might take some time, as they are 41 LY away )

Yeah, wild game is always more tasty than farm grown meats.

There seems to be a bit of a mix-up. Big Rip Cosmology was mot modelled by R Penrose. Conformal Cyclic Cosmology was, and it also makes use of particle decay. "The conformal cyclic cosmology hypothesis requires that all massive particles eventually vanish from existence, including those which become too widely separated from all other particles to annihilate with them. As Penrose points out, proton decay is a possibility contemplated in various speculative extensions of the Standard Model, but it has never been observed. Moreover, all electrons must also decay, or lose their charge and/or mass, and no conventional speculations allow for this. " From https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Conformal_cyclic_cosmology

What makes you think no one has … Response[edit] In 2012, on the 35th anniversary of the Wow! signal, Arecibo Observatory beamed a digital stream towards Hipparcos 34511, 33277, and 43587.[29] The transmission consisted of approximately 10,000 Twitter messages solicited for the purpose by the National Geographic Channel, bearing the hashtag "#ChasingUFOs" (a promotion for one of the channel's TV series).[30] The sponsor also included a series of video vignettes featuring verbal messages from various celebrities.[31] To increase the probability that any extraterrestrial recipients would recognize the signal as an intentional communication from another intelligent life form, Arecibo scientists attached a repeating-sequence header to each individual message, and beamed the transmission at roughly 20 times the power of the most powerful commercial radio transmitter.[30 From the Wiki article on WOW signal... https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wow!_signal

I got the impression that he's not gay, or attracted to the same gender, but that he's been teased/bullied because he 'looks' gay. ( whatever that means ) But either way, his issues with self-loathing, drug withdrawals and suicidal tendencies are waaaay above our pay grade. These are issues best left to professionals; although it may seem cold-hearted not to offer help, we risk making the situation worse.

Maybe you should try that metal washer on a corner of the washing machine .

At resonant frequencies vibrations can add up, and not interfere. Think of running a wet finger around the rim of a partial wine glass; at a certain angular frequency the resonant vibrations with the glass crystal re-enforce each other and cause an audible whistle/whine. Enough re-enforcement can even shatter the glass. Yet a little faster, or a little slower, and you hear nothing.

That is correct. Infinity does NOT act like a number infinity + 1 = infinity Infinity - 1 = infinity And for that matter, infinity +/- ((((((10)^10)^10)^10)^10)^10) … is still equal to infinity. What other number has those properties ?? And again, I ask, What is the last number before infinity ?

I will agree with everyone else. Most people who get to know you, and care about, don't care about your gender identity or sexual orientation. They like/care for you as a 'person'. This hating some aspect of yourself,on the other hand, suggests some psychological issues which needs to be addressed by a professional. If your current Austrian Psychiatrist hasn't helped for ( what appears to be ) 20 years, maybe you should consult others. Multiple opinions can't hurt. Maybe they'll tell you that "you are fine", and just need to grow 'thicker skin'.

If you can parse this sentence you're a better man than I am, Studiot.

This is an example of an improperly posed question. Approaching infinity or approaching zero ? How are we to make out what you actually wish to ask ? Come-on, you can do better.

How to Deactivate My Account??
MigL replied to CuriosOne's topic in Suggestions, Comments and Support
I notice that no-one has asked about your age, CuriousOne. If you are under 20, you're still in the 'learning stage' of your life, and people will cut you all kinds of slack, and try to help you. If you are between 20 and 50, people expect you to know some basics, not be so impulsive ( dare I say scatter-brained ? ) in your actions and posting style. Once pointed out, they expect you to stop the annoying behaviour and conform, or else you soon find yourself with a sac full of neg reps, suspensions, and even banning. If you are over 50, I gotta ask … How did you manage to make it so far in life ?? -
How to Deactivate My Account??
MigL replied to CuriosOne's topic in Suggestions, Comments and Support
You can be a 'quitter', walk away, and prove us right. Or, you can prove us wrong about you, stick around, show us up, and actually learn something. Again, purely voluntary; the choice is yours to make. ( yes, this is called 'tough love' ) -
Doesn't make sense to us either ... By the way, did you pass your Calculus studies ?

Videos can be used to supplement ( or complement ) your argument. Videos cannot be used as ( or instead of ) your argument. Subtle difference in posting, but makes a big difference in discussion.
