Aren't some science documentaries ever so slightly sensationalist?
MigL replied to joigus's topic in The Lounge
I don't know where you're from, Joygus ( the 'origin' doesn't tell me much ), but the days when schoolteachers became teachers for the love of teaching are gone. I guess teachers are only human. ( remember when sports were for the love of the game ? ) Here in the Canadian province of Ontario, a schoolteacher, with all his/her training up to date earns over $ 100 000 per year while working for the school board. That is with two summer months, one PD day every month, Christmas vacation, reading week and March break , off. And the best benefits package, and pension this side of politicians. That's even if they're teaching 1st grade, and almost twice as much as private school teachers. It wasn't always like that. In the 70s, I did have a couple of teachers that deeply influenced my life, both deceased now. One was an engineer who taught Physics, the other was a hard-a*s Algebra teacher who almost failed me in Gr 13. My University teachers were all quite decent, maybe because it was a very small university, and there was only two Physics students in my 4th year, and lots of interaction. On any given day, the Prof, I, and the other student would be at our own sections of board scribbling equations. The only one who I didn't have experience with ( everyone thought he was young and clueless ) is now the head of the department ( Ha-ha ). These teachers/Profs that influenced me, didn't 'dumb' things down, or sensationalize science and math. First question asked of us in Gr 10 Physics ( 14 yrs old ) was " Are you moving ?" I was the only one to reply "Relative to what ?" -
Matter/anti-matter asymettry, Dark matter, dark energy and how they relate
MigL replied to jasondoege's topic in Speculations
It will be interesting to see how they plan to test for that, as we can barely establish the existence of the Higgs field. I don't think, after the 'cost' of this pandemic, a collider larger ( more energetic ) than the LHC will be built anytime soon. It will have to be a more 'nuanced' approach. -
Did not know you wear panties, JC . ( not that there's anything wrong with that ) Don't you know you shouldn't 'out' someone against their wishes, INow ?
-
Its a shame that little girls ( little boys also ) don't get to vote, INow. E Warren is fairly young, I'm sure she will contest the nomination again. Without J Biden or B Sanders, she would own the nomination. The MeToo movement has been moving for a couple of years now, JC. Yet as late as last year, T Reade claimed in interviews that there was 'flirting' with J Biden, but never an assault. It was only early this year that she lobbed the assault allegation.
-
Can you use a more 'washed out' font ? Someone might actually be able to read your post. Wouldn't want that to happen, would you ?
-
We can discuss E Warren again in 4 years time, or, if J Biden decides to select her as his running mate. ( would not be a bad idea, she would be VP for 4 years, and probably POTUS during the next 4 ) Does anyone else think T Reade's story has a few holes ? She claims that, post incident, she told people about it, including her brother. Now, other people might have forgotten an incident from 27 years ago, but I find it hard to believe a brother could easily forget his sister's assault, no matter the amount of time passed. Yet he did, only to subsequently remember in great detail. She claims she doesn't want to influence the election, yet she puts out her story 7 months before the election, and, she wants J Biden to drop out. Any reason she gives for coming forward with the accusations now, was just as valid when B Obama chose J Biden for VP. So why now ?

The lessons to be learned from carpentry. I like it.

Is that why nearly half of Americans would rather live here ? ( OK, maybe not for the weather ) By the way, most of our aboriginals are still around; they were mostly exterminated in mass genocides of the 1800s, in the US. And if they so choose, they can take advantage of every opportunity non-aboriginal Canadians have. It's hard to accommodate people who choose their 'own' way of life, but demand it be exactly the same as everyone else's. It's very hard when aboriginals demand self-governance as a 'separate' nation, but also want support, infrastructure, housing, etc. from the rest. It's even harder when they demand their own separate justice system and penal code, then complain about the lawlessness. It's most difficult when they flout the law, partake in illegal gun sales ( funny how aboriginals are allowed semi-automatic assault rifles, but the rest of us are not ), illegal gambling, cigarette, booze and gasoline sales, and moan about lack of rights. Need I go on ? Last I checked our death rate in Canada is much lower than the US, and the standard treatment for Covid-19 is self-isolation unless hospitalization is NEEDED. That means sitting at home doing nothing; Or would you rather you mother went out shopping, to infect even more people ? And considering what your health care cost you, it is damn fine system. The US isn't too far from Montreal. Check into an American hospital. See if you get better treatment. And bring you life savings with you. This is the Science Forums DISCUSSION site, not the RANT site. And to paraphrase Americans in the 60s, "Canada, take it or leave it". (my apologies to the rest of the membership for the counter-rant )

You can try messaging DrP; I believe he was a coatings chemist. ( haven't heard from him in a while )

I know what you mean, and the liberation/generation of CO2 is a concern for the vast majority of people. That being said, CO2 is not waste. It is essential for life on the planet, and part of a 'cycle'. ( its constituents are the basis for all life on the planet ) Certainly not the definition of waste

You failed miserably, Swans; can't wear either of those on your wrist . Are you fishing for a raise, by buttering up your employer ? -

And we haven't 'seen' that for 50 years. Why was going to the Moon so important 50 years ago ? But today, the 'bean counters' who are in charge ( of everything ), always justify cutting funding with cost/benefit analysis. -
ESO instrument finds closest black hole to Earth
MigL replied to Curious layman's topic in Science News
Given the vastness of time and space, I wouldn't be surprised if there are BHs much closer than that. This one was only detected because of the favorable arrangement of orbiting stars in that system. Lone BHs, where the dust/gas from the supernova event has long since dissipated, or encouraged an existing nebula to Pop.I star formation ( in galactic arms, where we are ), would be almost impossible to detect -
Conspiracy theories propagate among non-critical thinkers, simply because you cannot disprove something that has no evidence, or basis in facts.
-
That is one slippery looking floor. Would be an invitation for lawsuits, in a business setting.

Umm, a singularity is non-sensical, it is the point where mathematical models diverge to infinities. And they have no dimensions, making 'within a singularity' even more non-sensical. People would take you more seriously, if you knew the difference between a singularity and a horizon. ( not that it makes a difference to the rest of the word salad ) You should learn some !

What the he*l is going on in the UK ? The Covid-19 death toll has now surpassed Italy's death toll. Not good. Is the NHS badly supported ( staffing, supplies, ventilators, blood thinners, etc. ), incompetent, or are other factors at play ?
-
Well, this went off the rails in a spectacular fashion...
-
I was thinking of more 'local' phenomena, like trying to induce micro BH formation at the LHC...
-
So is the mass. According to fairly well understood stellar nuclear fusion. The volume change is more dependent on temperature, and resultant radiation pressure, in conflict with mass, and resultant gravitational contraction pressure.
-
Stars don't decay to 'nothing'. Keep digging.

There is no 'lines' in space or space-time. There are in the mathematical model. Can you show me a tensor, or is it a mathematical concept ?
-
While energy will contribute to the geometry of space-time, just as mass does, it does not curve in any way. You can in fact, argue that even space-time doesn't 'curve', but geometric curvature in the mathematical model ( GR ) effectively reproduce observational evidence. After all, space-time is merely a mathematical concept, a co-ordinate system geometry, if you will. Unless you are confusing energy with light, and the fact that light follows null geodesics ( curved by gravity ).

Yeah, but I can't keep up with 'modern' usage. It changes way too quick . Apparently I'm out of bed, showered, shaved and dressed, but I'm not 'woke' yet.
