  1. What about compressing the air ? How much energy does that use ? I would say exactly the same as putting that much weight on balloons, to submerge them to an equal depth, and re-compress the air.
  2. The scene I remember most vividly, from The Andromeda Strain, is that of the woman having an Epileptic seizure because of the flashing red lights. At the time, I didn't even know what Epilepsy was, And I couldn't understand why she stopped. ( I now realize it also wasn't a realistic depiction of a seizure )
  3. Dumbing down the explanation so as to make it more understandable to your audience, only gets you so far. The audience itself, has to make some 'effort' to understand, by asking the right questions, filling in the 'holes' in their understanding if you will. We all had the same teachers as 20-25 other people, in school, yet some learned more and some learned less. IOW some put in more effort, and some less ( or no ) effort. ( I, myself, was accused, by Dr. G Kidson, in Uni, of being a 'coaster', and not putting in enough effort )
  4. Wishing everyone a happy, and safe, Easter.

Happy Easter ya'll. Stay safe, I hope we will all have the patience to keep this up, it's been almost 5 weeks for us here.

  5. Interesting. We view the number 'system' as continuous; we can put infinitely many numbers between any two numbers. Could the 'solution' to our problems with time and unification be as simple as using a discrete, or 'quantized', number 'system' to model reality ? It certainly warrants further investigation.
  6. Haha Apparently it's so high, nobody else knows what you're talking about, half the time.

You should visit sometime, Sensei. Not right now, though, we're in the middle of a pandemic. ( its actually not that bad at all )
  8. Prayer ? Or maybe human sacrifice... It would accomplish just as much.

I thought that was mostly your President ?
  10. You cannot have a discussion when one side uses, and expects, observational evidence, while the other presents, and expects you to believe, their opinions based on subjective faith. This IS a Science site which uses and expects evidence ! I guarantee this thread will go on for a multitude of pages, without accomplishing anything, nor changing anyone's mind. I vote for closure.
  11. Darn. I was just about to tell you that you're a little late, and the party started without you .
  12. We have had many 'scientific' discussions in our Religion Forum. One that I found particularly interesting was concerning whether Jesus was a real person, or a fictional character. We can also discuss the psychology/ morals of believers and non-believers, or even other Religions. So I don't have a problem with 'scientific' discussions concerning Religion. But 'belief' itself is not amenable to scientific discussion.

Maybe someone can explain it to me too... If you voted in the last election, does the Government not have a record of you voting ? ( not who you voted for, but that you voted ) Does the US not conduct a Census every so many years ( for all sorts of reasons ) that indicate who is an eligible voter ? And does the Government not have your mailing address from that Census or your tax return? It would cover about 80 % of eligible voters, and a Voter Registration Card could be mailed to them a month prior to election time. It would make the line-ups of people needing to prove that they are eligible to vote, much shorter. A backward country like Canada manages with such a system. Yet the US can't ?????
  14. We're 8 pages in , and this discussion is starting to look like the Bugs Bunny cartoon... "It's rabbit season", "No, it's duck season", "Yes it is", "No it isn't", "Yes it is" ... There is nothing scientific about this discussion; religious or otherwise. And we ARE a Science forum... Maybe Teroko should be posting on a Religion forum. But certainly not here. Just sayin'.
  15. No problem... I'm just using the excuse to bring up a little history ( one of my favorite subjects ) .
  16. Not necessarily a bad speculation, but certainly incomplete, and lacking rigor. Stick around ( or study at school ), learn a little, and try again.
  17. The term 'dark' in Cosmology just means we don't know. The 'flow' is an apparent motion in a specific direction. This could be cause by a gravitational forcing in that direction, i.e. Great Attractor. But there is a small possibility that this apparent anisotropy is due to other reasons ( Cosmological Constant, or Dark Energy anisotropy ? ). Since we are not sure, it is called 'dark' flow, or motion.
  18. Yes it is, Cliff and Friendstalkingwithyou... And some do think your idea carries some weight. "In January 2011, a team, led by Stephen Grasby of the Geological Survey of Canada—Calgary, reported evidence that volcanism caused massive coal beds to ignite, possibly releasing more than 3 trillion tons of carbon. The team found ash deposits in deep rock layers near what is now the Buchanan Lake Formation. According to their article, "coal ash dispersed by the explosive Siberian Trap eruption would be expected to have an associated release of toxic elements in impacted water bodies where fly ash slurries developed.... Mafic megascale eruptions are long-lived events that would allow significant build-up of global ash clouds."[116][117] In a statement, Grasby said, "In addition to these volcanoes causing fires through coal, the ash it spewed was highly toxic and was released in the land and water, potentially contributing to the worst extinction event in earth history." https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Permian–Triassic_extinction_event#Volcanism Whether this was an isolated case, or global, needs more research. Its been fun/interesting learning with you.
  19. Absolutely agree. Some people need Religion. It gives them comfort and hope. If that makes them feel better, who am I to try and take that away. But, by the same token, don't preach to me, or try to convert me
  20. Oil fields are not surface phenomena; they are usually underground, and have little access to oxidizer to burn with. Surface phenomena, other than vegetation, are decaying vegetation ( already oxidizing very slowly ), and tar pits, which would burn for quite a while. How much oil would you need to burn to equal the CO2, and other gases spewed by one volcanic eruption ? The Mt. St. Helens eruption was only a 5 on the log scale of volcanic eruptions ( 1 to 8 ), yet it released 10 million tons of CO2 in 9 hrs. But that's relatively small, as all of Earth's present volcanoes emit 260 million tons annually. https://skepticalscience.com/1980_mt_st_helens_eruption_co2_emissions_compared_to_us_transportation_sector.html And this is a relatively 'quiet' time for volcanic activity compared to previous eras ( like the one in question ).
  21. Oh you Frenchies… Don't get me wrong, I love the language. As the Merovingian says, in Matrix Reloaded, "Its like wiping your a*s with silk." But you have one revolution, in the very late 1700s,where you kill a large part of your people, oppressors and revolutionaries, and you think you're the most secular nation in the world. Yet you had troops in Italy, protecting the Papal lands of the Vatican ( a large part of central Italy ), and preventing Italian unification until the Germans kicked your a*s in the Franco-Prussian war 0f 1870. Now you want to claim the US isn't secular because of what they print on their money ? I could understand if you had said religious groups, like Southern Baptists, form the base of some high ranking politicians, like D Trump, the President. But that is how democracy works. Even the Religious have a voice. And that's a good thing; less oppression that way.

Wisconsin was a Democrat primary, with only a Democratic candidate, and an independent, trailing so badly, he threw in the towel the next day. Think about it. How would voter suppression benefit the Republicans ?
  23. Vegetation, set on fire by volcanic eruptions, burn even less cleanly than coal. Why postulate burning oil fields ? One was the result of bad engineering, and incompetent cover-up, Sensei. The other, the result of water getting where its not supposed to be , because of an earthquake. But you're right, it can happen.
  24. Only one, in the Ukraine.
  25. Then we're agreed... This whole discussion is useless.
