Your delusions are not my problem.

But you can see, touch, analyze and take chunks of rock out of the one mountain. The other mountain is based solely on belief; you can't see it, touch it, or analyze it. And everybody takes whatever they want from it; and that seems to be the source of a lot of problems.

You need to re-read that, Dim. I don't know how you got that meaning.

To be fair, that idea of vengeance from the Old Testament, has been somewhat modified in the New Testament, with Christ's policy of forgiveness., even those who crucify him. Even so, God, His Father, demanded 'retribution' from his Son ( become human ) for humanity's sins, and he had to die on the cross. So the idea of vengeance wasn't totally forgotten. ( according to scriptures, not necessarily reality ). My comment wasn't regarding Satanism, Prometheus. I know very little about that subject.

It does seem to fly in the face of charity. You guys are looking at it wrong. It is not 'help yourself' at the expense of other people. But 'help yourself (s)' and don't rely on a deity to help you. I guess only Koti and I understand and appreciate Conan.

Corona virus general questions mega thread
MigL replied to FishandChips's topic in Microbiology and Immunology
For those of us ( like me ) who are not up to speed on Virology, this thread, from another forum I frequent, seems t be a good beginner tutorial... https://www.airliners.net/forum/viewtopic.php?f=11&t=1443947 Perhaps CharonY can have a look at it, and answer any questions we noobs might have. ( or make any corrections as needed ) -
Yes , we are off topic. Did not know you were Canadian. Now that U of Caribou comment in your profile makes sense. TRU ?

Maybe my bias is showing too. It seems that J Trudeau's ( PM of Canada ) handling of the crisis has earned him an approval rating of 75 %, while the Ontario Premier is in the middle 80s, and the Quebec Premier has an approval rating in the 90s ( ! ). President D Trump, on the other hand, has dropped down to an approval rating of about 40 %, with over 50 % disapproving of his performance. ( according to Yahoo News ) If this lasts till the fall, he's toast.

Really ? I read A Guth's book on the subject, in the middle 80s. I already had my BSc by then.

The Big Bang is not a moment, but a model of the evolution since that 'moment'; the point at which we can no longer regress in time because our theories don't work anymore ( usually taken as the Planck era ). We only have information about our observable universe, and know that it is finite. What is outside is causally disconnected and cannot be known. It could be infinite, and our 'universe' developed from a small part of an infinite, hot dense state. And from these small parts, infinitely many 'universes' developed. But then all these small parts would not all be in causal contact with each other, could not share information, and might lead to totally different universes. But there are many other possibilities. That was one of the purposes of the original inflationary model. Before inflation, all parts of it were in causal contact ( they are not now ) and so homogeneity and isotropy were ensured.

Holy crap, Mordred. You were already studying physics in 1921 ?
-
This is not a theory. It doesn't provide a mathematical ( or any other kind ) framework, based on at least some evidence, and is incapable of making any testable predictions. How can you possibly defend this idea ( not theory ) to questions from scientists ? It is, at best, overactive imagination.

I would say that if you 'see' them, they are there. The light coming from them and gravitational effects both travel at c . Those two long range forces are the only things that make them 'real'. What 'is actually happening right now' at that far-away star, will not be real until information ( light and gravity ) reaches us in the future.

Expansion different in different directions

As Mordred has already explained, any dipole anisotropy is the result of our flow, or movement. The best example I can think of is the red and blue spots, 180 degrees apart from each other, on the CMB map. Once adjusted for our motion ( Earth around Sun, Sun around galaxy, galaxy towards Andromeda ) these spots disappear. ( red shift in the origin direction, and blue shift in the destination direction ) The flow, which even the authors suggest ( see quote from paper's conclusion, in my previous post ) might be galactic cluster flow, which means it is even smaller than the dipole anisotropy in the CMB, and not previously noted. And after I gave Bmpbmp75 a +1 for finally getting 'serious', he reverts to his old ways... -
When I was younger, I used to read Conan the Barbarian. A fictional character created by R E Howard, whose deity was the God, Crom. I will never forget Conan's one belief... "Crom helps those who help themselves." and I wish more people would insert their God in the above saying.

As Ghideon and Strange have explained, what you see in the distance/past, is what is actually out there. The speed of light is also the speed of ANY information transfer, and causality depends on it. There is no universal now, so what you 'see' is what can actually affect you. The fact that a star 100 LY away has gone nova, will not affect you for 100 years ( if you live that long ) Trying to consider what is happening 'now' to that star 100 LY away, is like trying to consider what will happen to you 100 years from now.

Yeah, too bad D Trump removed the appointed overseer of the couple trillion dollars government bailouts, and appointed one of his cronies. That's how he can make REAL money; not by promoting the use of Hydroxycloroquine. I thought for sure, he would have run out of a*s-kissers by now, but he keeps finding unscrupulous people to do his bidding/dirty work, like the Secretary of the Navy, who fired the USS Theodore Roosevelt carrier commander who was concerned about the Covid-19 outbreak on his ship, and has now resigned himself.

Is he still alive ? Haven't heard from him in a while.

Corona virus general questions mega thread

Is it accurate to say that China has larger numbers of asymptomatic cases as opposed to Western experience with symptomatic and fatal cases ? Several years ago, in Walkerton, Ontario, several people died from contaminated drinking water. The saying at the time was " If Mexicans lived in Walkerton, no one would even get diarrhea ", and certainly not die. The increase in allergies in Western societies has been correlated to our 'cleanliness' ( general contaminants and food prep. and separation ), as has mononucleosis. Could the fact that we are not subject to the close living conditions and resultant lack of hygienic conditions, have made our immune system much less robust ( like muscle atrophy, if you don't use it, you lose it ) and more prone to serious outcomes, or even death, when others ( China, Korea Taiwan, Vietnam, Thailand etc ) are not affected as severely ? -
Expansion different in different directions
MigL replied to Bmpbmp1975's topic in Astronomy and Cosmology
Not a big deal. I would expect anisotropy out to a certain distance, as expansion is mitigated by gravity and flows ( of galactic cluster masses ) on smaller scales. True isotropy will only become apparent at extremely large distances, and may only approach it at the limit. From the paper... "If no biases are identified as the reason behind the anisotropies we observe and other probes seem to consistently agree, then the explanation might indeed be of cosmological origin. Such examples would be an anisotropic dark energy nature leading to different expansion rates for different directions in the late Universe, coherent bulk flow motions up to certain cosmic scales affecting the cosmological redshift measurements etc." Good to see that you CAN understand scientific literature, Bmpbmp75. Maybe now you'll stop 'foolin' and become a productive member of the forum ? -
I don't see that as damning evidence, Koti. The US has provided start-up seed money to a lot of companies involved in the manufacture of vaccines. And it is the largest contributor to the WHO. How much money could D Trump personally make by 'pushing' this treatment option ? The patent on it has expired and it can be manufactured by any company, and while the original company to introduce it, is one of the largest pharmaceuticals in the world, Hydroxychloroquine is a very small part of their business. When you couple that, with costs under a dollar per pill for the generic, how big a boost will Sanofi actually see in its stock ? Also D Trump doesn't actually own stock in the company, but Sanofi is a component of a lot of Mutual funds, which he probably has in his portfolio. I think you guys are overplaying his greed, and underplaying his stupidity.

apparently, after 76 days, Wuhan reopened its roads and airport today. Operations at the airport resumed with 271 scheduled flights, 140 arrivals, and 131 departures. No international or hi-density ( wide body planes ) flights. Is that a light I see, at the end of this long tunnel ? -
I don't get it either. What would be the advantage to the Republicans by forcing it to go ahead ? Some dead democrats, who won't be voting in the November election ? I think the Political leaders in the US have lost their minds; you still seem sane to me, CharonY.

So, Sensei... God is a programmer, and the universe is a simulation ? And he is only awakened when something interesting happens ? We orbit a small star ,in an indiscreet, suburban neighborhood of an average galaxy, in a smallish cluster, located nowhere special. What interesting event could possibly happen here ?
