  1. A tariff IS a tax. When you buy something, nec209, who pays the tax ? Is your understanding of economics comparable to D Trump's ?
  2. I would not use any sprays or liquids, but a little dab of Lithium grease on slide rails, gears, or other moving components ( NOT on/near the laser/diode ) probably won't hurt. The mechanism comes pre-greased where it is needed, and will probably last 20 years; just how long were you planning to keep your PS/2 Slim anyway ? ( I have Atari STs and Amiga 500s from the middle 80s where the floppy mechanisms still work )
  3. I'm not sure I'm understandung this correctly. Albert is claiming that U91) symmetry is broken at temperatures of the present universe, as evidenced by the Meissner Effect. It is my understanding that the Meissner Effect is the (nearly ) total expulsion of magnetic fields from a superconductor, leaving only thr 'electrical effect; a sort of symmetry break of electromagnetism into electrical and magnetic components. But, if I recall Noether's Theorem, the symmetry would be electric charge and current conservation, such that the symmetry is broken when charge is not conserved. But I may be wrong, as I don't have a significant grasp of group theory. Regardless, the contention is that the only remaining symmetry is SU(3), and this implies a 'minimum volume' which is approximately the size of a proton. Never mind that the proton is a composite particle, which itself has much smaller features. But here is the real stretch. The number of estimated 'proton volumes' in the (observable, which is constantly changing in size ) universe happens to be closely related in magnitude to the discrepancy between the 'estimated from theory' vacuum energy and the 'derived from observation' value. And on this vague relation Albert has proceeded to base a theory on. This seems, to me, a non-sensical relation, as it smacks of numerology. Is there any evidence that this 'minimum SU(3) volume' is related to the proton volume, and further related to the vacuum energy discrepancy ?
  4. Just to add to Markus' always excellent answers ... Energy is determined by the configuration of a system ( think potential energy ), so different configurations will have differing energies, even though the systems are comprised of the same individual parts. These differing energies have different contributions to the stress-energy tensor. IOW, two systems, comprised of the same individual objects, but arranged differently so as to have different energies, will have different gravity.
  5. Ok, so this is the telepathic magic trick ? Bob a nd Alice are separated by a distance. Bob tells Alice he is going to measure a direction, and transmit the information to Alice 'telepathically'. He measures a spin up, and 'telepathically' communicates this information to Alice. Alice measures the spin of her entangled particle as down, and having received the 'telepathic' message from Bob, she knows that his spin is up. Alice then posts that Bob's spin is up, as she has received the 'telepathic' message. Is that what we are mow calling telepathy ? It might even fool Penn and Teller. ( yes, my niece was on that show, and she fooled them )
  6. What do you mean ? The crashes are much bigger ?
  7. Random number generators are not random; they do eventually repeat. The example you describe uses that mathematical knowledge to predict which 'random' number will come up next. If that is pseudo-telepathy, then this belongs in pseudo-science.
  8. In the old days we used to click on 'disconnect USB device' to allow the HD to park the heads, before disconnecting. I don't think I've done that in the last 20 years. Is your drive not working ? Doesn't seem like you bumped it too hard. If it makes weird noises when you plug it in, you may have crashed it. If it sounds normal, but doesn't show up, try going into disk management to re-enable/re-partition/re-format. Or you can, try opening it and checking any internal connections that may have come loose.

    Harris vs Trump;

    You are more than welcome, but you'll have to put up with me talking your ear off about the Israeli/Palestinian conflict for the 4 years.
  10. Not really, but portable external HDs would probably benefit. Any time I put HDs in external enclosures I usually slip some foam in there, because I tend to be rough with them. I don't recall exactly, but an HD, with heads parked, should survive 50G. If spinning, and heads travelling over the platters, even small bumps could cause the heads to crash.

    Harris vs Trump;

    D Trump is leading or tied ( but still within the statistical margin of error ) in most of the 'swing' states, and this would indicate a winning scenario for D Trump. However it is said that in the 'confirmed' Republican voting states, about 9% of 'centrist' Republicans ( ones who haven't drank the crazy Kool-aid ) will vote for K Harris. The Electoral College system makes prediction of an outcome, under those conditions, a crap shoot, but it may have an effect in states that are marginally Republican. The election is too close to call, so everyone who can vote, and values democracy, had better get out to vote on the 5th ) if you haven't already ). This election will affect me, also ( and the rest of the world ), so don't take it for granted.
  12. Simplistically, yes. Although other effects also play a part.in what an observer 'sees'.
  13. urns out SFn is also an AI. We'll be ignoring you here, also.
  14. I have always found SFn, both the arguing and the humor, a good way to release stress. Maybe you should be posting more. ( and since you always post interesting stuff, I might post more often also )
  15. Let me take a shot at simplifying ... An external observer sees the spaceship, moving at close to c , shortened along the direction of travel. But, relativity ! An observer inside the ship sees the universe ( and the external observer ) rushing past him at close to c ; all distances/lengths along the direction of travel are shortened.
  16. Ha-Ha We may have no science, but we got plenty of humor.
  17. My reply wasn't meant to be taken seriously. I'm not incel. Ask yo mama.
  18. Human males provide sustenance for their mates, and offspring, by a lifetime of working. The male Black Widow gets it over with right away, by providing only one meal. Which is more 'barbaric' ? ( dumb questions beget dumb answers )
  19. I would say the shock absorption qualities of the foam on the longevity of the SATA connectors, and the flying heads in the hard drive, far outweigh any corrosion concerns of the EVA on the masked copper traces.
  20. Fortunately, in science, if someone posts something insightful, I learn something. And I have, more times than I can remember. Unfortunately, with Religion, most everyone's mind is set; no one is changing Night FM, or anyone else's mind. Doesn't make for productive discussion
  21. I don't see how a digital, or analog, definition makes any difference. ( dumb questions beget dumb answers )
  22. It is not unusual, lately, to log on and the new Topics list is totally populated by Religious topics with the odd gender/sexuality related topic. Used to be Science related topics with the odd Political topic. I long for the 'good old days' when a science discussion would go on for many pages. Have 'our' interests changed drastically, or are we encouraging people who get tossed from other forums to come post their unwanted topics here ? I find myself posting less and less, as a lot of the topics don't interest me, and I don't think ( opinion ) they belong in a science forum. And I've noticed a lot of the more senior members doing the same. have others noted this trend ?
  23. Transgenderism is a condition usually arrived at through medical means, whether gender reassignment surgery or hormonal treatment. The 'urge' to exchange gender is what some people may be born with; this 'struggle' sometimes leads to transgenderism ( or sometimes merely to cross-dressing 😄 )
  24. Before any analysis of what Jesus Christ had to say on the subject, you would need to first ascertain His existence. No easy task, I assure you. There is speculation that the Christ was merely an amalgam of political dissenters, real or made up, who protested the Roman occupation and taxation of Judea. The 'Christ' was a means to start a movement to oppose that occupation, and it seems to have worked reasonably well albeit slowly. All we have on Jesus Christ are a 'posthumous' collection of writings, a few of which claim to have been written while He was still 'alive'; by propogandists, not historians, so even if you could find any writings about Jesus' views on sex, how would you be sure they were His own ?
  25. No. Priests, bishops, and even 39 Popes, used to be able to marry until the late Middle Ages.
