here's an interesting thought to ponder: to keep up with inflation, minimum wage should be $20/hour.

transition metals' reactivity.....
budullewraagh replied to albertlee's topic in Inorganic Chemistry
information can be found in linus pauling's works. just a note: electronegativity does not directly correlate with activity. by the way, we would use activity and not reactivity, as reactivity implies the presence of another reactant. one could say that, say, iodine is more reactive than sodium when mixed with lithium. we could also say that molten lead is more reactive with oxygen than, say, iron. activity is based on potential differences- oxidation and reduction potentials. -
why do you compare bush to others in order to defend him? these figures only show that we still have work to do. it's easy to extrapolate that neither president has been successful. our goal should be to eliminate poverty, not "do better" than the previous president.

Would it be "racism" if it wasn't a Republican president?
budullewraagh replied to Pangloss's topic in Politics
i think the government just doesnt care about the poor. there is a war on everything except poverty. the gov can get an army to the middle east overnight, but only finished evacuating new orleans after a week. they could have provided transportation for the poor and car-less, but did not. george bush doesnt care about poor people -
just to clarify, it's diethylamine that is used in lsd production. diethylamide doesn't exist, although diethylformamide does. and sorry jdurg, but you are quite mistaken to believe that "You can possess ANY chemical in your home that you want and the law enforcement will have no bounds to arrest you." you also contradicted yourself when you said "For diethylamide (Or diethylamine, I can't recall the exact name), it is illegal to posess because the only use for the compound is in the manufacture of LSD." for more on the illegality of possessing rp, wp and yp, check this out: http://www.deadiversion.usdoj.gov/fed_regs/rules/2003/fr06242.htm "On October 17, 2001, DEA published a Final Rulemaking (66 FR 52670) in which DEA added red phosphorus, white phosphorus (also known as yellow phosphorus) and hypophosphorous acid (and its salts) as List I chemicals. This action was taken because of the use and importance of these chemicals in the illicit manufacture of methamphetamine (a Schedule II controlled substance). As List I chemicals, handlers of these materials became subject to Controlled Substances Act (CSA) chemical regulatory controls including registration, recordkeeping, reporting, and import/export requirements. DEA had determined that these controls are necessary to prevent the diversion of these chemicals to clandestine drug laboratories." the government watches sales of these chemicals. and don't forget; they don't need a warrant anymore. now, to clear up the issue of kno3.com. first, i would like to say that i would rather my chemist bretheren not be arrested so long he or she has good intentions and a level head on his/her shoulders. i challenge anyoneto tell me of a site that has any allotrope of phosphorus for sale to the general public in quantities of more than 10g at a price of less than 5x the price/unit mass that kno3.com sells it for. i also challenge anyone to show me 5 sites that sell red phosphorus to the general public, regardless of price. this may be possible, but then you can consider price and quantity. now consider and compare it to the price of, say, Potassium Perchlorate, which is £29.50 for 500g at similar purity. check out the typo found here: http://www.kno3.com/infopage.asp?page=7 "RAW CHEMICALS INTERNATIONAL LIMITED is located , in the state of, Greater Manchester." state, what? england? state? also, check this out: http://72.14.207.104/search?q=cache:3DDwbos6okoJ:www.chemicalsman.com/kno3urls/home.html++kno3+police+red+phosphorus&hl=en they have since edited the link concerning the cleveland police i need not discuss the alleged owner of the site and the source of the chemicals sold at kno3.com, as we have already discussed this. i wont waste my time arguing about it, but i would strongly advise everyone to think about from where they wish to purchase chemicals.

DO NOT USE KNO3.COM- IT IS A US RUN ANTI-METH SITE. if you buy rp, you will be tracked and, quite possibly arrested

it was aluminum hydroxide soln, but there were only a few mg in solution, tops

Which nearly pure minerals are more abundant ?
budullewraagh replied to Externet's topic in Inorganic Chemistry
silicates of calcium, aluminum, magnesium and iron are very common carbonates of magnesium and calcium are also common, but often are in mixes (dolomite). ferric carbonate is common sulfates (hydrates and anhydrous) of calcium, barium and strontium are common chlorides of calcium, sodium and potassium and ammonium are common calcium fluoride a number of oxides can be found- ferric, ferrous, titanium (IV), etc FeS2, plumbous sulfide, etc calcium phosphate -
ok? and this relates how?
-
tin is significantly more active than lead, so you should have tin
-
well yes, it's alkaline, but certainly hardly. as mentioned before, the solubility is reaaaaally low.
-
a soln of Al(OH)3? it's almost totally insoluble. like just a few mg/L. you sure it was a soln?

what annoys me is that there is a "lag" so to speak in prices. stores buy gas one day, then sell it for more money the next day. when prices drop, they can still reap the excess profits for another day or two, or three

i think that the calcium would react rather quickly with the water, so you'll end up with a whole lot of calcium hydroxide.

titration of ammonia give ammonium phosphate?
budullewraagh replied to qwerty's topic in Inorganic Chemistry
NH4+ cant be a base. where are its electrons to donate? certainly not there. the pKa is 9ish, so it has acidic character. this is why ammonium salts are generally slightly acidic. -
yes, i know that there is nothing wrong with being a capitalist. well, at least a moderate capitalist. i dont like rabid, totally unrestricted capitalism. in the statement "you sound like a capitalist," i did not mean to imply anything, actually. it is to be taken at face value. the statement pangloss made concerning "artificial" restrictions of capitalism humored me due to its very typical capitalist nature, and so i responded to it, citing his apparent capitalistic viewpoints.
-
"Artificial "curbs on greed" are just penalties for success, and always lead to long-term trouble, not winning solutions." artificial? you sound like a capitalist. can you elaborate on how a windfall profit tax would lead to long-term trouble? please remember that this is only meant to exist until the market calms down

tired of paying so much for gas? i sure am. one may ask why is it so expensive. is there really a shortage? no. OPEC has just decided to capitalize more, and as a result, US oil refineries are exploiting this situation in their favor by raising their own prices. what happened to good ol' patriotism? isnt it better for the general public to not suffer? turns out that those good ol' texas compassionate conservative republicans have decided to swindle us again. we need to bring back the 1980 windfall profit tax act to curb the excessive greed. i suggest we tax the excess profit that american oil refineries are making at a very great extent, perhaps 70, 80, 90 or even 100%. the money made from this tax would be distributed to each state depending on the amount of gas sold in each state, and state taxes would be decreased accordingly. opinions, anyone?

titration of ammonia give ammonium phosphate?
budullewraagh replied to qwerty's topic in Inorganic Chemistry
variable concentration will only affect kinetics. this: 3NH3 + H3PO4 --> 3NH4+ + PO4(3-) is not completely correct because there must be an excess of NH3 to form the tribasic salt -
actually it is fair. while they are allowed to retire, they dont
-
just a note, NaOCl forms NaClO2, NaClO3 and NaClO4+varying amounts of NaCl depending on how you treat it. the chlorite, of course is very unstable and so kinetically speaking, the chlorate is favored. thermodynamically speaking, the perchlorate is favored. solid NaOCl is very, very unstable and will explode violently

titration of ammonia give ammonium phosphate?
budullewraagh replied to qwerty's topic in Inorganic Chemistry
actually, the acid dissociation constant of HPO4-2 is 4.2 x 10^-13 whereas the acid dissociation of NH4+ is 5.7 x 10^-10. according to these figures, formation of tribasic ammonium phosphate cant be favored as seen above, because HPO4-2 is a stronger base than NH4+. -
not related to the current conversation, one can find anhydrous caffeine sold for $22/lb at http://www.al-chymist.com
