  1. "LOL !!! Yeah, that would work " ive seen pictures of working birkeland-eyde reactors made by amateurs. a 1:1 ratio of H2SO4/XNO3 works as well. note that NH4NO3 isnt so effective. just buy potassium nitrate
  2. Mn2O7 i dont suggest you produce it unless you plan on using it soon; it's unstable and decomposes readily yielding ozone. in fact, i wouldnt suggest anybody keep any sample of it for more than 24 hours
  3. well he could make a birkeland-eyde reactor, but that's a bit tricky. at the same time, so is this. if you really want nitric acid, i suggest you make the anhydride by reacting conc H2SO4 with a nitrate salt. NOTE: THIS REACTION YIELDS THE VERY, VERY TOXIC ANHYDRIDE OF NITRIC ACID; N2O5. MAKE SURE YOU HAVE A COMPLETELY CLOSED APPARATUS AND USE ONLY PTFE/GLASS TUBING, LEST THE TUBING BE OXIDIZED AND CORRODED AWAY. MAKE SURE YOUR TUBING LEADS BELOW THE SURFACE OF THE WATER IN YOUR SECOND BEAKER AND MAKE SURE IT WILL NOT BE PUSHED OUT FROM UNDER THE SURFACE WITH THE INITIAL PRESSURE. ALSO, KEEP THE SECOND BEAKER IN A CLOSED ENVIORNMENT. sorry to yell, but it's very, very important that you know all this.
  4. ok, well: at 800-900 celsius and with a platinum or rhodium or Pt/Rh catalyst, NH3 is oxidized by atmospheric oxygen to form nitric oxide. the NO is immediately oxidized to NO2/N2O4, which can be bubbled into solution, forming nitric acid and more nitric oxide.
  5. he made permanganic anhydride, which oxidized the ethanol
  6. yes, i know how to. why do you need nitric acid?
  7. Fe2O3 and Fe3O4 have Fe at +3
  8. bones are made of hydroxyapetite. if i were you i wouldnt take out my thyroid to isolate various hormones... come to think of it, you can get a bunch of enzymes and hormones, but it's tedious and morbid
  9. aye. we're sort of hesitant to help you because of the problems that could be brought up with the gov
  10. i can count. whoops. i know that +5 is common for phosphorus, but please consider the fact that phosphorus is commonly found at +3. consider the halides of phosphorus; it is comparatively much more difficult to bring phosphorus to +5 than +3. http://www.chemistry.emory.edu/undergrad/students/molecules/gifs/82_00.gif i have seen my share of images of the structure you present as well as the structure i proposed.
  11. i must disagree. the phosphorus in phosphorous acid is trivalent with the oxygen. this satisfies the octet rule, leaves a pair of electrons, so it's all good. in the structure shown in your link, phosphorus makes 4 bonds. this almost never happens without formation of ions. also, the hydrogen would definitely bond to the doubly bonded oxygen rather than the phosphorus, due to electronegativity differences and the exposed lone pairs on the oxygen.
  12. "Christians believe that life starts at conception. Consider yourself now enlightened. I personally think Christians having a badly placed line is better than having no line at all." that doesnt answer any of my questions, so i will consider myself still lacking enlightenment. also, i challenge that statement. i was raised an episcopalian until a few years ago, and i never heard anything about conception being the "line" between gametes and child
  13. there is no P-H bond...it may be related to the bond strengths of P-O (which differ the O-H bond energies) in each compound
  14. i've never understood the "conservatives'" approach towards abortion/stem cells. if embryos are alive and human, why do we not have funerals for miscarriages? why do people say "we have 2 children and 1 on the way"? why not "we have 3 children"? if embryos are potentially forms of life, why do we not call men mass murderers? think of the 10^n of sperm lost with every ejaculation. why are women not serial killers? of the 400+ eggs a woman has upon birth, she uses how many? what about birth control? what about the pill? each pill kills an embryo. may as well be an abortion. why do people allow frozen embryos to be disposed of? could someone enlighten me? also, demosthenes, can you tell me how it is wrong to use embryos when they are going to be disposed of anyway? another thought that needs to be raised is the fact that other nations will do stem cell research. can we risk being that far behind in a technology that most likely will be a huge industry within the next hundred years?
  15. well, the senate is generally a bunch of whores, so they definitely wont override. i think bush will continue to be a complete jackass and he'll veto this in order to save hundreds of thousands of frozen living beings. and by saving i mean allowing them to be thrown into the proper trash receptacles.
  16. youll get sodium aluminate from Al2O3 and NaOH, i believe
  17. in winter, slacks and a nice sweater (cashmere when possible) or a button-down long sleeved shirt. oh, and merrills. at other times, khaki slacks most of the time, shorts on occasion and an untucked button down shirt, collar and top button undone. in autumn i wear merrills. in spring and summer i wear new balance.
  18. haha well thanks. it's easy enough though and really effective. just as effective as HCl+XOCl
  19. yes. consider certain...cholinesterase inhibitors, etc. plus all the oxides and halides of phosphorus arent pleasant. phosphine as well. phosphides arent good either. organophosphates? alkylated phosphorus? scary as hell man.
  20. phosphoric acid is a bit sketchy at times. you can do some unpleasant things with it. also, you can reduce it to white phosphorus. just please dont ask; phosphorus compounds are generally sketchy.
  21. gasoline is a mixture of C5-C10 aliphatic hydrocarbons. the "octane" rating in gasoline is basically a measurement of the concentration of octane (C8H18) present in the gasoline. octane is generally the best hydrocarbon of the C5-C10 aliphatic hydrocarbons because it requires more force to combust. just a followup: "unleaded" gas refers to gas that doesn't have tetraethylplumbane in it.
  22. also, trichloroisocyanuric acid and HCl work very well
  23. i actually have enough atropa belladonna atm. on the other hand, is 3,4,5-methoxyphenethylamine legal in the US?
  24. ":edit: I'm not gonna kill anyone :edit:" it's ok; we know it's very, very hard to die as a result of exposure to chlorine gas. but really, search around. just a side note: after going through today's new posts, i think we REALLY need to divide the chem forums into subforums or something. waaay too many posts for one forum.
