  2. Mn2O7 i dont suggest you produce it unless you plan on using it soon; it's unstable and decomposes readily yielding ozone. in fact, i wouldnt suggest anybody keep any sample of it for more than 24 hours
  3. well he could make a birkeland-eyde reactor, but that's a bit tricky. at the same time, so is this. if you really want nitric acid, i suggest you make the anhydride by reacting conc H2SO4 with a nitrate salt. NOTE: THIS REACTION YIELDS THE VERY, VERY TOXIC ANHYDRIDE OF NITRIC ACID; N2O5. MAKE SURE YOU HAVE A COMPLETELY CLOSED APPARATUS AND USE ONLY PTFE/GLASS TUBING, LEST THE TUBING BE OXIDIZED AND CORRODED AWAY. MAKE SURE YOUR TUBING LEADS BELOW THE SURFACE OF THE WATER IN YOUR SECOND BEAKER AND MAKE SURE IT WILL NOT BE PUSHED OUT FROM UNDER THE SURFACE WITH THE INITIAL PRESSURE. ALSO, KEEP THE SECOND BEAKER IN A CLOSED ENVIORNMENT. sorry to yell, but it's very, very important that you know all this.

  10. i can count. whoops. i know that +5 is common for phosphorus, but please consider the fact that phosphorus is commonly found at +3. consider the halides of phosphorus; it is comparatively much more difficult to bring phosphorus to +5 than +3. http://www.chemistry.emory.edu/undergrad/students/molecules/gifs/82_00.gif i have seen my share of images of the structure you present as well as the structure i proposed.
  11. i must disagree. the phosphorus in phosphorous acid is trivalent with the oxygen. this satisfies the octet rule, leaves a pair of electrons, so it's all good. in the structure shown in your link, phosphorus makes 4 bonds. this almost never happens without formation of ions. also, the hydrogen would definitely bond to the doubly bonded oxygen rather than the phosphorus, due to electronegativity differences and the exposed lone pairs on the oxygen.

  13. there is no P-H bond...it may be related to the bond strengths of P-O (which differ the O-H bond energies) in each compound
  14. i've never understood the "conservatives'" approach towards abortion/stem cells. if embryos are alive and human, why do we not have funerals for miscarriages? why do people say "we have 2 children and 1 on the way"? why not "we have 3 children"? if embryos are potentially forms of life, why do we not call men mass murderers? think of the 10^n of sperm lost with every ejaculation. why are women not serial killers? of the 400+ eggs a woman has upon birth, she uses how many? what about birth control? what about the pill? each pill kills an embryo. may as well be an abortion. why do people allow frozen embryos to be disposed of? could someone enlighten me? also, demosthenes, can you tell me how it is wrong to use embryos when they are going to be disposed of anyway? another thought that needs to be raised is the fact that other nations will do stem cell research. can we risk being that far behind in a technology that most likely will be a huge industry within the next hundred years?

  20. yes. consider certain...cholinesterase inhibitors, etc. plus all the oxides and halides of phosphorus arent pleasant. phosphine as well. phosphides arent good either. organophosphates? alkylated phosphorus? scary as hell man.
  21. phosphoric acid is a bit sketchy at times. you can do some unpleasant things with it. also, you can reduce it to white phosphorus. just please dont ask; phosphorus compounds are generally sketchy.
  22. gasoline is a mixture of C5-C10 aliphatic hydrocarbons. the "octane" rating in gasoline is basically a measurement of the concentration of octane (C8H18) present in the gasoline. octane is generally the best hydrocarbon of the C5-C10 aliphatic hydrocarbons because it requires more force to combust. just a followup: "unleaded" gas refers to gas that doesn't have tetraethylplumbane in it.
