  1. well, methanol is used as an antifreeze, as i have a container in my basement marketed as an antifreeze.
  2. "Methanol is a poison and buing it requires you to get a poison certificate from your local police station. I'm not sure about "Nitro", meaning Nitromethane in model aviator circles. Considering it being a main ingredient in several (impossible to make) explosive mixtures, I guess you'd have to sign your name as O. B. Laden to get a waiver." methanol can be purchased around here as antifreeze. i think nitromethane can be purchased, although it isn't too effective for making other explosives. usually nitric acid is used to make secondary explosives.
  3. chemistry isn't so much a subset of physics...chemistry follows the rules of physics. chemists need to know physical chem, kinetics, thermodynamics, etc, which is physics and chem, but that is as far as the overlap goes. molecular biology is less chemistry than biochemistry. biochemistry is still annoying; every biochem book i've seen has had some errors and they are all written from a biologist's point of view.
  4. place? like, where to get supplies? where to test rockets? where to learn how to make rockets?
  5. pick a temperature, start adding NaOH to water and stop when it starts precipitating. of course, you can just look up solubility properties
  6. it's really simplified chemistry, although i suppose the more advanced the class, the more chemistry will be involved
  7. methanol isnt controlled, anywhere last i checked. what is "nitro"?
  8. well, it's not healthy, but it's also not toxic, like at all
  9. benzene isnt made for amateur labs...
  10. well, i wouldnt say that chlorine gets oxidized by fluorine, per se. it's a covalent bond with partial ionic character. "Can fluorine react with any of the noble gases? If so what does it make?" he asked if fluorine can react with NOBLE GASES, not halogens. anyway, fluorine reacts with noble gases...KrF2, XeF2, XeF4, XeF6
  11. we can't get that around here
  12. well yes...it's not even near as bad as bromine or chlorine though. nonetheless im not exactly going to breathe it. the only gas i trust is oxygen, really i'd like to play around with some liquid iodine some day
  13. if by "totally disagree" you mean "disagree with the part about the complete purity" i understand. my regrets, i forgot about those non-ionic solutes at the time
  14. i dont think we're paying for it...
  15. see image: add the HCl to the NaOCl/Ca(OCl)2 and put the funnel down immediately. the u-tube should be under the surface of the iodide solution. make the iodide solution relatively concentrated. also, it should be noted that it's a good idea to get a way to hold the u-tube under the surface of the iodide; otherwise the pressure may cause the end of the u-tube to rise above the solution. make sure you get a good stoichiometric lot more chlorine than iodide, as if there is iodide, it will dissolve the iodine. when the reaction is done, take your wet iodine and dry it. a good way to do this is to pour off the water (quickly because the iodine sublimes), then put the iodine crystals in a closed tube and have it evaporate and pass over some CaCl2 or if you're so fortunate to have some, Mg(ClO4)2, before solidifying in a cooled area of your apparatus.
  16. gah i dont want to teach you everything...search online. here's something you should know: 1 mole=6.02*10^23 molecules=grams*molecular mass
  17. i seriously think we need to stop using hydrocarbons. it's becoming rediculous. our existence really depends on hydrocarbons. i suggest we find better sources...catalysts, perhaps? methanogens? woot, 2000th post
  18. "A couple questions: What if the prisoners refuse to be indoctrinated? Are their rights on hold becasue they are prisoners? Is this constitutional? If it was found to be inneffective, why were the statistics lied about to seem positive? Isn't the goal to find a program to help prisoners?" then they refuse to be indoctrinated. you can't force someone to believe something. it is constitutional. if you wanted, you could represent the church of satan or something and talk to them. they lied because they wanted to continue their program
  19. it's mostly aluminum with some oxide impurity. if it's wet, you'll have some hydroxide impurity. "I did experiment 2Al(s) + 3CuCl2.2H20 (aq)---> 3Cu(s) + 2AlCl3 + 6H20" if you had the oxide of aluminum, it would hydrolyze to form the hydroxide. you wouldn't get copper. deionized water is just that: DE-IONIZED water. there are no ions dissolved in it. it is completely pure.
  20. and a nice purple iodine cloud will be formed. i've always found iodine gas to be a beautiful colour
  21. some radioactive...people don't make radon compounds. people make xenon compounds and a few krypton compounds, but generally shy away from radon.
  22. i should try it with my 2 micron al dust
  23. aluminum is fun like that. are aluminum-halogen reactions as cool as red phosphorus-halogen reactions?
