it was in poor taste "At least he hasn't ruined our military and sold our secrets to China!" at least he hasn't burned the constitution, ruined the economy and destroyed our political position in the world! wait, i'm wrong -
ok, so keep your fluorine buried in your back yard and try not to die
-
"how can you build a theory without explaining the origin of first living organism? you cannot." mhm, and guess what. the original atmosphere was a reducing atmosphere composed of water vapor, hydrogen gas, methane and ammonia. amino acids were formed from chemical reactions between these gases, catalyzed by the intense radiation at the time (for lack of an O2/O3 equilibrium in the upper regions of the atmosphere), so yeah. you lose.

um, you really don't know much of asian history. the chinese and koreans have always been like brothers. think noryang point, the mongols, japan, etc. you're using your own unbased reasoning to try to slant history in your favor. sorry man but we see through you -
just wait until the liquids evaporate. if the solution is clear you should have KI, even if there is some ethoxide. you will have ethoxide impurities. if you dilute, they will still form towards the end of your evaporation as long as there is an excess of KOH
-
btw a good way to finish this quickly and easily is to just make a chlorine apparatus and displace the iodide
-
either way the KI should come out as long as the solution is clear

meh, the statistics were a bit off, i'll grant you that. perhaps my source was a few powers of ten off. nonetheless, it does go straight to the bones, heart and cns. and then there's the paranoia factor...
-
eh...fluorine self-catalyzes. there are -OH impurities in glass; nomatter how hard you try to remove them, there will still be one or two left. continuous self-catalysis occurs and one day randomly the fluorine will escape. it's not about to react with atmospheric gases...as it floats around it will ignite anything organic. if it hits your skin, 10ppm will burn a hole in you straight to your bones in 0.06 seconds, from what i've heard...then your bones go aqueous and you get anemic...plus the fluoride formed goes straight to the heart and suddenly you're dead. if it doesn't kill you within a minute it will severely diminish your lifespan. we have to remember that great chemists were killed by this gas. great chemists who were very careful, experienced and skilled still couldn't handle the great tiger of chemistry. when fluorine is produced it generally isn't kept around, just about anywhere. few places store it, and those that do chill it in liquid nitrogen and seal it in the most secure devices possible, namely thick PTFE. it just isn't practical. even if you do get it, you will be paranoid. you'll constantly find yourself wondering just how many -OH radicals there are in the glass. you'll wonder how fast the rate of reaction is and you will know that one day, randomly, the fluorine will escape. this may be when you are standing next to it. this may be while you are out. i still get a bit creeped out by my room, which has smelled slightly different ever since my encounter with H2S, SO2 and HI gas.
-
don't get fluorine. even if you have it safely stored, you will become paranoid very, very quickly.
-
ah well. you should get your KI, but it is of course very hygroscopic. if i were you i would remove the crystals formed and keep the evaporation going. with the crystals you have, i suggest you take a small sample and add a drop or two of conc sulfuric acid and see if you get HI gas. if you don't it's the ethoxide and it will burn. i suppose you could also try drying the crystals and see if they darken upon exposure to light and air. try doing the latter first and with another sample try the former.
-
well that makes sense, as the excess KOH shifts the equilibrium even more in the direction of synthesis of ethoxide
-
well, that's a 0.9M solution. with the alcohol there...and the hydroxide...i think it's safe ot say that there would be enough ethoxide to cause the colour change
-
i'd say you have quite a high pH in that solution of yours. you evaporated a bunch of water and you had a good amount of hydroxide to begin with. potassium ethoxide is decomposed by water to form potassium hydroxide and ethanol. since you have so much KOH to begin with and a small amount of water, with a bunch of ethanol, you probably have potassium ethoxide, which does not decompose in ethanol
-
hmm, what restriction enzymes do you have at your disposal?
-
a-ha! sodium ethoxide is a white or yellowish hygroscopic powder according to the merck index. potassium ethoxide isn't mentioned but i think we have our answer. it is decomposed by water to the hydroxide and ethanol, but the alkaline solution should shift the equilibrium

anti? read his name: atinymonkey. a. tiny. monkey. -
what do you think of the prospect of the ethoxide?
-
ok so just to get this straight: you took tincture of iodine and added KOH until the solution turned clear. you heated the solution and liquids boiled off. perhaps you got some potassium ethoxide? i can't find its colour, but perhaps thats what you made. or maybe an iodine complex.
