  1. refer: http://www.lateralscience.co.uk/C60/C60.html and more specifically: http://www.lateralscience.co.uk/C60/C60pics/C60app.jpg my question is how one could produce such an apparatus at home. the concept of making fullerenes fascinates me, although i really dont know what to do with regard to apparatus setup. also, is it just me or is that letter really amusing?
  2. check http://www.dnai.org as well
  3. haha, what about pauling? schrodinger?
  4. it is a sort of "father knows best" trust-influenced relationship between the government and its citizenry
  5. there needs to be a sort of balence. the people of the US currently do not know what is best for them, sadly
  6. ah but do the people know what is best for them?
  7. that would be called communism. it restricts capitalism. you can't have "unrestricted" socialism by definition.
  8. completely unrestricted free market capitalism is not at all socialistic. there is no such state in existence however, as it would be doomed to failure
  9. there is capital gained in socialism. the difference is that the capital gained is redistributed to some degree. one could make the claim that the united states has a significant number of socialistic values, such as social security, the sherman antitrust laws, etc. socialism is a limiting factor to the corporate m-c-m' system of economics and promotes c-m-c' economics to a degree, as well as more standard deviation of wealth
  10. socialism is acutally a form of capitalism
  11. yes, but when the solution is boiling you make chlorate from what i am told. i would imagine a significant amount of hypochlorite and chlorite would be produced however. that is one of my questions; how much of both of these products will be formed?

to a degree. i had figured they would work well. calcium nitrate is actually used often
  13. i've heard that one can produce sodium hypochlorite by pumping chlorine gas into a saturated solution of sodium hydroxide. i've also heard that if the solution were boiling, one could produce sodium chlorate, some of which precipitates immediately due to solubility rules, but the rest of which forms interesting looking crystals upon continuous boiling followed by cooling. of course, this sounds like much fun to produce. i was wondering if a better yield would be produced if i were to use potassium hydroxide i was also wondering how much hypochlorite would be formed in the process. and finally, i was wondeirng what sort of apparatus to use. i was thinking about generating chlorine which would rise through a tube and finally below the surface of the solution, but does anyone have other ideas? having a volumetric flask would be most helpful in this situation but i dont have one:\ with regard to potentially useful glassware, i do however, have a glass funnel, u tube, 500mL florence flask, and a few 400-500mL beakers.

alkali nitrates are best for that what about alkaline earth nitrates? i haven't heard too much but supposedly calcium nitrate isn't too bad. ever heard of strontium nitrate being used? or barium?

ammonium nitrate actually is quite poor for production of nitric acid from what i've heard anyway. not that it makes a difference considering im not going to be trying a nitric synth anytime soon. perhaps if and when i get a gas mask and i can do it in an oen field, but certainly not before then, lest i expose myself to highly toxic gases AGAIN
  16. my friend couldn't get me gallium from the lab where she works
  17. good call, yt but overly expensive from most sources
  18. could be potentially difficult to flush ALL the O2/N2 etc out of the reaction vessel tho
  19. haha wohoo i am the proliteriat! greetings my bourgeoisie bretheren
  20. haha, maybe i'll try that. thing is i need to make a neutron gun first...which isn't happening. i could probably find a way to get the beryllium, but it could be difficult (and no im not paying $20/gram on unitednuclear) but i have a number of associates who work in labs, some nuclear, some not. problem is i need a good alpha source which could be tricky. plus then i need to make sure the atmosphere this is in is totally inert without the slightest impurity, lest the entire mixture oxidizes rapidly
  21. oh i will...the wp would instantly oxidize yielding enough heat energy to oxidize the al, certainly. thus i'd need to do this in a completely pure inert atmosphere
  22. yeah but i want really finely divided wp if you follow ;p
  23. actually, if i ever can make a neutron gun i'll try nucleosynthesizing some wp out of 2 micron al
  24. they said it pompously as if to say that their chlorine dioxide data was acceptable for all chlorine dioxide
