  1. want a cookie? :\ the german dark is called dust actually
  2. yeah, figures. i have a bit of it meself:) i call it dust tho, not powder
  3. which al powder?
  4. mhm, and our government doesnt even care
  5. i would set up a closed chlorine apparatus with tubing to your KI soln container, which should also be closed off. make sure this apparatus can sustain a bit of pressure and be careful not to make the chlorine burst out, but that should work. your KCl will be aqueous
  6. oh i agree it is easier. the reaction is: KI+Cl2 --> KCl+I2 it's just the more negatively active chlorine oxidizing the iodide anion to iodine and reducing to chloride
  7. both work actually
  8. yeah buddy:\
  9. yeah, for 25g it's $7 at unitednuclear...altho theres a $7.50 flat rate for shipping
  10. there are two methods you would rather try: 1. bubbling chlorine gas into a solution of iodide salts. the more conc the solution the better your results. careful with the chlorine tho; do it outside or in a fume cupboard and try to make it so the chlorine has nowhere to go EXCEPT the solution 2. acidifying the iodide with (20-30%) sulfuric acid preferrably (DO NOT USE HALIDE ACIDS...unless it's HI...but not like that's happening or anything) then oxidizing your iodide to iodine by adding a strong oxidizing agent, prefferably (40-60%) hydrogen peroxide. be careful to calculate everything stoichiometrically lest you create a bunch of peroxymonosulfuric acid and burn your hands off. also, add the peroxide slowly, as doing it too quickly could cause it to blow up
  11. you want to use sulfuric, which i cant find at local stores but some can. ive heard it's really poor though. charge old car batteries and filter out the insoluble lead sulfate and you should have 30-40% conc sulfuric

    Kno3

stable but also much more toxic than diatomic chlorine

    Kno3

    chloramine: NH2Cl

    Kno3

actually chloramine is significantly more toxic than chlorine

    Kno3

funny thing is they forgot the thing that is (usually) produced in greatest quantity: chloramine
  16. yeah it is a cool reaction. funny thing is it happens so fast you have to watch it a few times

    Kno3

    what terrorists?
  18. i would agree that the black Fe3O4 is the better one. rust tends to be the red oxide Fe2O3
  19. that isnt cheap... at all... i've seen it for $20/oz and iodide salts for $5-10/oz, but that is a terrible ripoff man
  20. i prefer potassium
  21. i believe those are iodide salts, most likely potassium iodide
  22. which oxide of iron?
  23. essentially the same products, although different amounts. oxidation of hydrocarbons yields water and carbon dioxide, and oxidation of glucose is similar except it takes a little less oxygen to react, as there is already oxygen in the glucose

what happens? nitrates and perchlorates? or just a runaway decomp?
  25. i remember my first kno3/sucrose reaction. it was a few years ago and i had yet to take a chem class, although i did have a good understanding of chem (i tell ya i was born with chem knowledge!)...a few friends and i sawed a coke can in half and put a few grams (probably about 10) in. we put it on a concrete slab in my friend's back yard and it took a few tries to ignite for some reason...but it finally did, and oh how it did. instantly a huge flame shot up. a crosswind came up... and yes, the neighbour's house was engulfed in a thick black smoke. whoops. luckily they weren't home. our can was completely gone by the time it was over with which makes me wonder...the reaction should go up at 1700 celsius or so and the boiling point of Al is 2467.0 °C...what was left of the can was the bottom which was fused to the concrete.
