  1. If the name has German origin as many surnames of American Jewish do, it may be that Feynman was originally spelled Feinman, (fein man = roughly fine(as in good) man). It is quite a stretch though.
  2. true dat. Sorry I got the SCN- mixed up from retitration of excess Ag+.
  3. I suggest instead of looking for a simplified a possibly inaccurate formula, tray googling for say "melting curve water" (or "...ice"). The curve at answers.com or at Martin Chaplin's site should work for you.
  4. Gels are usually translucent and often quite transparent and they are non-Newtonian liquids.
  5. um, there is more than one titration possible here. if there is AgNO3 or AgSCN, you can use its solution to determine the amount of chloride. As for the titration with HCl, I think you should titrate to somewhat below pH 7 and heat the solution mildly while titrating, but I think that the pH will get through the range between say pH 10 and pH 4 within at most a couple of drops (if you don't dilute one of the solutions VERY much), so if you can live with a percent or two amiss you can use pH7 as endpoint.
  6. again best use Wikipedia, it is useful for this kind of questions. In the "White gold" article karat was not linked to its article, but if you would simply type the word into the search field you would have gotten the links for Carat (purity) for gold and Carat (mass) for diamonds. Read more about WP here.
