  1. Personally I have no problem with the PATRIOT Act. But I feel that your comparison of the Bush administration to the Gestapo gross hyperbole. The Gestapo was a Nazi Agency charged with keeping Hitler in power through secret police activities and was latter was in charge of the construction and operation of concentration camps designed to cleanse Germany of undesirables. I see no comparison between a democratically elected administration who's actions have been reviewed by a independent judiciary and an independent legislature and a dictorial police agency which commit mass genocide resulting in the death of millions of innocent people. Also as Pangloss pointed out the idea of warrants was not discarded. The government simple provide an alternative method to collect evidence in order to protect the America. On a side note I find it odd how people equate the PATRIOT Act to the Bush Administration when Congress was the ones who reviewed edited and passed the law.
  2. Blatant attacks on a persons character and or personal appearance that are based on blatant mistruths and lies have no benefit to society what so ever. They serve no other purpose in my opinion than to advance ones own personal goals. Attacks based on credible evidence or that discuses valid issues are the only type of attacks that have benefit towards society. As for the comparison both are attacks that serve no other purpose than to defame a persons character by making blatantly untruthful statements and comparisons. The "Barrack the Magic Negro" song and the Bush-Chimp comparisons are both wrong and have no place in society. So in my opinion it does not matter which is worse because they are both wrong.
  3. Agreed. This color scheme is probably the easiest to read in my opinion.
  4. Personally I like the light blue background with black text. Also personally I find websites that use a dark background colors (black) with lighter text colors (white or even worse neon colors) to be harder to read.
  5. I was just wondering if GUT was going to continue anytime soon. I know Cap'n told me that they were on hold for a while.
  6. I personally have not read Hawking's paper and I am not personally qualified to critique his paper. But, as far as I know I did not think there is much dispute over this. Could you please post the papers that say black holes do no radiate?

  8. Both of these are a year old but I haven't changed much.
  9. In my opinion the basic ideas for math are universal. Like Shadow said 1+1=2 no matter if we knew it or not. So since the ideas for math are universal math is not so much an art like painting but is more like a coloring book where we can only draw inside the lines already given to use.
  10. I work at a pizzeria and one day I was working and I set a persons order next to the register and the dropped a handful of assorted change, grabbed the pizza and left before I could do anything. I was slightly irritated at the time but after I finished counting it I found out he left roughly a $4.00 tip on a $12.00 order, so that made it okay. But, I would probably react like the waiter if someone tried to pay for that large of an order in pennies.
  11. I need help with this organic chemistry problem: "Organic compounds typically absorb infrared radiation. This absorption is due to: " I know that an organic compound is one that contains carbon and carbon normally tends to form four single bonds with [math]sp^{3}[/math], tetrahedral geometry. Although carbon does also form double bonds resulting in either sp or [math]sp^{2}[/math] with either linear or triangular planar geometries respectively. But, I do not understand how the molecular structure affects the absorption of radiation.
  12. For me I study math becuase in my opinion math is the language in which the truths of the universe are written and one day I hope that math will help me discover these truths. As a side note, I find it fun and I need it in order to enter a good university.
  13. My experience is that yes it is ocasionally used. I was given an IQ test when I was in 1st grade which showed that I was learning impaired in reading and writing. Yet all this meant was that I was offer more oppurtunities for help, such as one on one teaching. Now ten years after that I am one of the top students in my AP English and Literature Course. So I believe IQ test are still used to help identify students who may need specialized help. As for the debate on the concept of IQ tests, I feel that although IQ like all tests are not perfect they are an incredible usefull tool. IQ in my opinion has been a long tested method and theory that can not be refuted simple by claiming that certain scientists were racist nor simply stating that scientfic conjectures based on sound research are void without citing proper scientfic evidence.
  14. I love derivatives becuase I get to lie tangent to your curves. This is not mine I found it online somewhere a long time ago.
  15. I think your mistake is that: [math](-1)(\sqrt{-1})\neq\sqrt{(-1)(-1)(-1)}[/math]
  16. The charges against Cheney seem to be weak at best. I highly doubt Bush or Cheney will be convicted not to mention serve an jail time. I also agree with Pangloss that political persecution is a very slippery slope.
  17. If you want you could cross the pound to Cambridge.
  18. The Supreme Court has already ruled on the issue of gay marriage. In Baker v. Nelson the Minnesota Supreme Court ruled that the state's laws prohibiting gay marriage did not violate any part of the United States Constitution, not the 1st amendment, 14th amendment, or article IV section II. The court also ruled that Love v. Virginia was not applicable to this case. On appeal to the United States Supreme Court the court dismissed the case "for want of a substantial federal question." This meant that the court felt that the Minnesota Supreme Courts ruling did not raise and constitutional question. This also set the precedent for all lower courts that laws banning gay marriage did not interfere with any part of the constitution and since many lower courts have used it in their rulings including Lockyer v. San Francisco. So essence the Supreme Court has already ruled on the issue of gay marriage and in order for them to rule that Prop 8 is unconstitutional they would have to overturn years of precedent. Baker v. Nelson Wiki Baker v. Nelson
  19. You are correct that if the state constitution was in conflict with the federal constitution then yes the United States Supreme Court could rule the amendment unconstitutional. Although I feel the grounds on which that case would be made would be shaky at best. The Equal Protection Claus has normally been judged with three scructinty levels and issues involving sexual orientation normally use the least scrutiny. This test is "applied by asking whether the governmental action at issue is a rational means to an end that may be legitimately pursued by government" (wiki). So the constitutionality of this case would be shake. I do not quite understand your point on Article IV Section 1 and 2.
  20. Although I have no problem with the court over turning a law passed by the legislature I am against them overturning an amendment passed not by the legislature but, by the people. In my opinion the job of the court is to rule whether a law is counstinutional. To me a constitution is a pact between the people and the government on what the people wish the government to do and what they are willing to give up in order to allow the government to do this. If the people directly amend the constitution to me this means that the people have redefined the relationship they wish to have with the government. So the in my opinion the court should have no say in whether it is legal because here the people are literally defining what the feel should be legal.
  21. I don't think that, the regulation of those markets would make that much of an impact. The average sales of marijuana in the United States in 2000 was 10.5 billion so even if you tax the product the revenue generated would not solve the problem. 35-http://www.whitehousedrugpolicy.gov/publications/pdf/american_users_spend_2002.pdf
  22. Personally I hate the idea of bailouts and have opposed them but to me I feel that we cannot let the automakers fail. If the automakers fail I feel that the ramifications will be huge. If they were to fail I feel it would send this recession spiraling into a depression. I do not endorse giving the auto companies or any company that is a blank check. If we are to give them money it should also come with mandatory restructuring and significant oversight. Over course I am a little bias because I live in The Mitten.
  23. So if the axes where complex numbers then they would be there correct.
  24. So today I was bored in class so I started to think about polynomials, specifically parabolas. I know that it is possible to find imaginary roots of a parabola. My question is when you graph this parabola that has two imaginary roots the curve never hits the x-axis then were are the imaginary roots at? When I asked my instructor he said he had no idea. My only guess was that there was a z-axis there the appeared somewhere but I really have no ideas. So where are the imaginary roots on the graph?
  25. I have been trying to teach myself calculus and I came upon this: [math]\frac{d}{dx}e^{x}=e^{x}[/math] I have been struggling to understand why this is. From my basic knowledge I have got this far. [math]\frac{d}{dx}e^{x}=\frac{e^{x+h}-e^{x}}{(x+h)-x}[/math] [math]\frac{d}{dx}e^{x}=\stackrel{Lim}h{\rightarrow}0\frac{e^{x+h}-e^{x}}{(x+h)-x}=\frac{e^{x}-e^{x}}{(x)-x}=\frac{0}{0}[/math] So I keep coming up with this intermediate form and I cannot figure out how to get rid of it. I might be doing this completely wrong so could some one please point me in the right direction.
