This actually is my first year of university (doing biology). I can only take biochemistry after I've done biology for two years. Not sure what exactly but I was thinking about genetics (just sounds really interesting to do research on DNA and such, so tell me if it is) or organic chemistry (neurotransmitters, how chemicals influence our body). I like chemistry a lot, the only part that doesn't attract me that much is al the industrial processes we discuss during class, I like every other part of it so biochemistry seemed attractive to me..

It all depends on how you define 'drugs'. What's considered drugs in one country can be perfectly legal in another country. So linking people who use drugs occasionally to being bad for society isn't right. Does anyone of you now that alcohol is considered a 'hard drugs' but still perfectly legal in almost every country? You can't kill yourself by smoking a lot of marijuana, but it's fairly easy to drink yourself straight into a hospital. What about the people that drink coffee the entire day? It wouldn't suprise me that if you used pure caffeïne you'd more or less get the same effect as using cocaïne since they're both stimulants. So are we considering coffeedrinkers to be criminals? No, ofcourse not. Why not? It just all depends on how a person handles whatever he or she does. Too much simply is too much, you just have to know you're limits and that counts for everything we do..

Are you sure about the K- at the outside of the axon? We recently discussed the transport of impulses through axons during my classes and the only compounds we talked about where Na+, Cl-, K+ and aminoacids. What they told me was that by transporting some of them in and out of the axon you create a voltagedifference (which will travel over the axon) but we didn't see anything about K+ taking 2 electrons.. Enlighten me please.

Aommaster, You're the one making the mistake here. Take a look at the link to the livercell YT posted and you will see that is there is a VACUOLE amongst the other cellstructures. As I said, animalcells also have vacuoles, just not all kinds of animalcells have them. And, I DO know what the difference is between vesicles and vacuoles.. It's ok for you to critisize the things I say, but make sure that you know what you're talking about so please, the next time you accuse somebody of making a GIGANTIC mistake, make sure the things he or she stated are absolutely untrue . No hard feelings. Edit: Didn't see the second page, still vacuoles and vesicles are not the same thing

If I'm not mistaking the animal vacuoles are somewhat used like a waterreserve or to deposit and store several chemicals produced by the cells metabolism

Yes, animals do have vacuoles but way smaller than plants cells because animalcells don't need to be so stiff (waterpressure from the vacuole against the cellwall).

True, my mistake. What I'm trying to say is that everybody should have acces to a good education. One should not be denied acces to education because his (or her) parents don't make enough money.

Where I live, you can get in every university you want, as long of course as you've finished your high school. I really think the american system sucks. It's overexpensive and you have to be allowed to enter a university. This is a serious form of racism. Just imagine, you and your best friend both have excellent grades (since you have to get in college), but your dads work doesn't pay as well as the work your friends dad does so he can go to college but you can't afford it. This is pure racism, on top of that you have to get really good grades to get into a college which most of the time doesn't even offer a decent education. I have a cousin that goes to college in california and his university costs his dad massive amounts of money and what and how they teach my cousin is definitely not worth the money they ask. I'd like to hear some reactions from people that go to college in the USA (other people are welcome too ofcourse)

Well the ammonia definitely has nothing to do with it because it's not in there and even if is was and you did form NH3 you'd have smelled it. I stick with what you said, adding a strong acid to a strong base will form salt and since the NaCLO3 is already a salt I don't think it will react in anyway. But then ofcourse, I could be wrong..

Teflon tape will be able to resist the heat and thus won't melt or burn. And you have to this when your lamp os cold because otherwise you'll burn your fingers..

So how much KCLO3 can you make out of 500ml saturated NaCL? Isn't it way easier to buy KCLO3 instead of making it yourself? People I know have bought it before in its pure form, but I don't know how much they paid for it.

Well, you can evaporate the water, which will leave the salt and other compounds out of your condense, but I don't know if that's enough to make it pure enough to drink.. -
Ending the 0.999~ = 1 debates

Don't we just say that 0.999..=1 because it doesn't really matters in calculations since you can ignore the small mistake you make? Same thing in chemistry, if something is small enough compared to another value we can neglect it, which doesn't mean it doesn't exist.. I think that 0.999.. is definitely NOT the same thing as 1 (it simply isn't, same thing like 1+1=1), but since the difference is so small you can say 0.999.. is EQUAL to 1 in calculations. It all depends how you look at it or what you have to compare it to.. -
Yes indeed, most plantcells do have mitochondria (ATP-production), endoplasmatic reticulum (mainly used for transporting stuff true the cell), lysosomes (contain enzymes to break down lipids) and a whole lot more..

You can get a clean view of a blood sample with almost every microscope, I even did it with the kind of microscopes they sell for children, bu then you can't see the individual cells but only colours.. In one mm³ blood you have about: -5000.000 red bloodcells -7000 white bloodcells (x10 if you have a serious infection)

You both go from point A to point B and you will indeed be there first but that has nothing to do with actually travelling faster than lightspeed. You just took another route but never exceeded lightspeed. So you CAN get somewhere faster then light if you take another route but you will NEVER go faster than lightspeed.

Sorry I've only just seen your reply about the dextrin. So then I mix the dextrin with the KCLO3/charcoal and under influence of the air it hardens? Sounds cool. Can I use it to harden whatever substance I want? Maybe I'll start with launching some fireworklike rockets first. As long as I can get them in the air I'll be satisfied . Thanks for al the usefull info

Hmm, How about making sure that the rockets gravity center is below the engines, that's not that hard to do? The melting is indeed a bigger problem, even if I'd use thin metal it would probably still burn through it. What about these two options: 1) Making sure there's enough distance between the engines and vulnerable rocketparts 2)Putting an angle between the engines and the rocket (which will also result in a loss of lifting power but I can adjust that)

Never heard of it, only of dextrose but that's probably not what your talking about. So what's its formula and how can I make it? I've never tried a rocket before but I do have experience with getting things in the air. I was thinking of putting the engines at the top of the rocket instead of at the bottom to prevent it from changing directions when in the air. Just think of it, it's way harder to push something up (because you'll have to watch out is doesn't tip over) than to pull it up. I'm going to make a rough model first just to get some more experience.
