  1. But if this is into galaxies now, I like this gem: http://heritage.stsci.edu/2002/21/big.html
  2. Could you just put a link to that image? Remember us poor modem users, who want to do other things on the net then wait for a huge pic to download.
  3. That krakatoa/siberia bit was one of the stupidest things I've ever read. We wont be going to Alpha centauria for a few centuries at least I should think. 1/4 lightspeed is an insanely high number, and remember you have to accelerate to that speed first, most of the journey would not be at that speed.
  4. Pigs can fly. No, they can't. Why not? They do not have the means to. Prove it. Pigs dont fly. Maybe they will some day.
  5. Well, as you can imagine, it is very difficult to find non-biased information on this subject. There are numerous sources that say it does not indeed kill braincells, however I have been unable to find anything corroborating my earlier statement. I will continue to look, in the meantime: MYTH: MARIJUANA KILLS BRAIN CELLS. Used over time, marijuana permanently alters brain structure and function, causing memory loss, cognitive impairment, personality deterioration, and reduced productivity. FACT: None of the medical tests currently used to detect brain damage in humans have found harm from marijuana, even from long term high-dose use. An early study reported brain damage in rhesus monkeys after six months exposure to high concentrations of marijuana smoke. In a recent, more carefully conducted study, researchers found no evidence of brain abnormality in monkeys that were forced to inhale the equivalent of four to five marijuana cigarettes every day for a year. The claim that marijuana kills brain cells is based on a speculative report dating back a quarter of a century that has never been supported by any scientific study. http://www.lindesmith.org/marijuana/factsmyths/ Also, a canadian senate comittee did extensive research on the subject. A summery of their report can be found here: http://www.parl.gc.ca/37/1/parlbus/commbus/senate/com-e/ille-e/rep-e/summary-e.pdf Its kinda long, but there is extremely useful information in there, from a pretty darned reputable source.
  6. I read this before, but it was a long time ago and I dont remember when. I will try and find a source for you.
  7. It sounds like you just made that up.
  8. Umm. As far as I know tachyons are particles that move faster than light, but cannot move at c or slower than c. They have also never been detected.
  9. Huh. The mars like thing hitting us and creating the moon remains theorectical. Dont know how well accepted it is, but I havn't heard any other explanations. The moon and the earth orbit around their mutual center of gravity. It would be closer to or maybe inside earth, because earth is a lot more massive. Again, theoretical. Jupiter in particular has a large gravitational field and sucks in a lot of comets. It follows that had jupiter not existed some of these comets may have hit earth. Or not. So yes it probably helped, wasn't necessarly a requirement. Comets thing I dont know, they do contain water, but that would have to be a ton of comets to form out oceans. We have found very few planets the size of earth, I dont know if any of them are in a position around their sun similar to ours. We need to discover a lot more planets before this theory can be discussed in more detail. Kuiper Belt is the collection of stuff past the orbit or Uranus I believe, or around there. Oort cloud I'm not sure. Uh, this is all just fact stuff, no physics. If you want real answers, look them up. http://www.google.com
  10. If the particle had mass, then it is a rumor indeed. If it didn't have mass, then it isn't much of a news story. We have never been able to accelerate a particle to c. That would be in direct violation of general relativity, and would definately make news if it was correct.
  11. I dont really know what you are saying, but I think its wrong.
  12. Dont always listen to what your physics teachers say. My high school physics teacher says that if the Earth's magnetic field were to dissapear everything would float off the surface of the earth.
  13. Oh of course. Light=photons=Electromagnetic radiation. Just that the first post asked if it was possible to redshift light, which is why i phrased it that way I guess.
  14. Oh, I for some reason assumed "shrinking" meant decreasing in mass, which seemed very strange indeed. But yeah, becomming more compact with time, I could definately see that happening.
  15. Heh, I find the question sort of funny, because redshifting applies only to light, you can't redshift anything else. As for doing with some contraption, I'd say the answer is probably, but it would be difficult. Its usually done over rediculous distances or with a large gravitational field. Uh, you have to figure out some way to make the photon less energetic. How, I do not know, should be possible however.
  16. I think its funny how this thread of 4 posts was made entirely by one person. And no, I dont have anything to contribute to this.
  17. We'll find out how right is is from testing it. Newtons laws at first seemed perfect. But over time, small problems and innacuracies began to come up, which eventually led to Einstien developing relativity, which edited a lot of Newtons work, and made it more accurate. I'm sure the same thing will happen with relativity, small little holes are begining to show up, and eventually something else will come along to edit that a bit. We keep editing until we no longer find any problems.

  19. Yeah that is surprising. It is definately counter-intuitive, although that sure isn't saying much. Neat, however.
  20. Not really.
  21. Yeah, you'd think it would... but then I havn't worked out the math, nor do I really know what I'm talking about. Carry on.
  22. Its probably your subconscious at work. Regular sounds may not wake you up as easily. Sounds that happen all the time, cars going by, furnace going, creaking of a house, things you hear every night you grow accustomed to. Eventually you dont even register the sounds on a conscious level. While a comparitavly quiet sound may wake you up if you dont regularly hear it. Or it just depends on how asleep you are at a given time.
