Why can't pharmaceutical companies find a cure?
DrDNA replied to nec209's topic in Microbiology and Immunology
Nice post. You listed what I will refer to as 1a. Targeted Drug Design. To elaborate further, we also have: 1b. Natural Product Chemistry or Pharmacognosy (a term not used much any more, but I still like it ). Which is isolating and screening compounds from for example, plants and marine organisms. Taxol is a good example. After the natural products are characterized, synthetic routes are usually devised in order to scale up production. In some cases, the structures of the compounds are modified to optimize activity and specificity. 1c. Combinatorial Chemistry. Synthesizing thousands of compounds and screening them for activity. Then selecting the active compounds for further screening. -
Good point. It is extremely dangerous to directly look at the sun without special eye protection (eg, during an eclipse or other solar event). I believe that it would be useful for the casual user to know what types filters and viewing apparatus are appropriate to observe phenomenon involving the sun so that they don't fry their eyes and even go blind. Eg, Sunglasses are absolutely NOT sufficient. The methods for safe viewing that I know about are: 1. Special viewing goggles designed for the purpose. Often referred to as "Eclipse Shades" or "Eclipse Glasses". These are often made from aluminized polyester, aluminized mylar or metal coated glass. Again, NEVER use sunglasses. 2. Number 14 welder's shields which are available through welding supply outlets. BUT NEVER use cutting torch or gas welding 'goggles'. These are not even sufficient for arc welding (eg, will give you "weld flash" if you use them for arc welding and, likewise, will let in too much light for sun viewing and fry your eye). 3. Pinhole projector. Cut a 1cm into a sheet of cardboard and cover a mirror with the cardboard . Point the mirror such a way that the reflection of the sun falls on a wall or on the side of a piece of plywood, cardboard or other flat surface and watch the event by viewing the spot on the flat surface. But NEVER view the mirror directly. 4. Indirect viewing using the VIEW SCREEN of a digital camera that has one of those flip screens so you can view it with your back to the sun. You should not use the camera's view finder though; that would fall under the category of direct viewing on many cameras so don't risk it! Making Hydrochloric acid + Halogen Chemistry.
DrDNA replied to Runner's topic in Inorganic Chemistry
Uhm..... I don't think it is a good idea to be trying this; esp at home without a fume hood. And you should not be adding conc base (including ammonium hydroxide) directly to any conc acid (including HCl or H2SO4). Are you sure that your instructions didn't say something about just using the vapors to test?? -
Yes. But psynapse's questions are relatively new. He/she obviously has something to say/inquire about. Besides, time is relative.

Saying that the problem is simply that the cells have gone bad is akin to saying that my car has gone bad (but much more complex). For example, there could be 100's or 1000's of reasons why my car has gone bad; but many more of reasons why a cell has gone cancerous. In general, the main difference between a drug and a poison is dose. And trying to specifically target cancer cells, which are derived from otherwise normal cells, without killing too many normal cells, is not trivial. It is sort of like adding a substance to your aquarium that will kill all of the spotted goldfish, without harming all of the uniformly colored goldfish. Yes. Yes. Yes and Yes. -
Yes. The long term effects of hanging out with those "friends" are very serious...... ..........as is relying on the information you get on the internet to make decisions about the recreational use of drugs/self medication. Conclusion: Flush the drugs and the "friends". Drink a couple of cups of espresso. Maybe you'll meet some nice new people at Starbucks.

Anybody that had an AM radio in the late '60s knows that when the moon is in the Seventh House and Jupiter aligns with Mars, then peace will guide the planets and love will steer the stars.

Nope. I responded to a spam ad for wigs. The ad was removed, so my statement was obsolete and it seemed rather odd out there all by itself; addressed to something which no longer exists.

After over a week of pondering, I finally voted. The Republicans have been ineffective in compromising with the Democrats got the vote. It's been too close to call; almost a neck and neck tie. The final tally was 50.00001% to 49.99999% after several hanging chads were thrown out and a box of absentee ballots were discovered. I still have not counted the military absentee ballots and, along with our tradition, do not intend to. I think that my 90 second daily dose of Hannity swayed the vote in favor of the Dems trying to share their toys with the Repubs, but the Repubs refusing to play. If it had been longer, say 2 or 3 mins, the margin of victory certainly would have been much higher. My 5 min drive home with left wing radio may sway my preference back a ten thousandths of a percentage point or two back in favor of the Repubs trying to play with the Dems toys, but not being allowed to. But my vote is final unless somebody comes up with a bribe or the supreme court rules otherwise.

I've soldered for years without any ventilation. It's never bothered me.

There are probably quite a few countries that offer more freedoms than the US.....if you have enough cash. For example, if I have enough money, I can do just about anything I darn near please in Nigeria. If I am a member of a small group of wealthy families, or a drug lord, the same goes for Mexico. Although it is not perfect by any means, I believe that the US offers more constitutionally endowed freedoms; regardless of class/ability to pay bribes. The ability to partake in the art of piracy (Somalia), eat live monkey brains (Thailand), sleep with minors (Vietnam) or do heroine/smoke hash/choose prostitutes from store front windows (ie, Netherlands) not withstanding....

I case any of you are still not clear on the message..... Although such grotesque characterizations of African Americans have largely disappeared from mainstream U.S. society, Eberhardt noted that science education could be partly responsible for reinforcing the view that blacks are less evolved than whites. An iconic 1970 illustration, "March of Progress," published in the Time-Life book Early Man, depicts evolution beginning with a chimpanzee and ending with a white man. "It's a legacy of our past that the endpoint of evolution is a white man," Eberhardt said. "I don't think it's intentional, but when people learn about human evolution, they walk away with a notion that people of African descent are closer to apes than people of European descent. --> Crude historical depictions of African Americans as ape-like may have disappeared from mainstream U.S. culture, but research presented in a new paper by psychologists at Stanford, Pennsylvania State University and the University of California-Berkeley reveals that many Americans subconsciously associate blacks with apes. http://rncnyc2004.blogspot.com/2008/02/discrimination-against-blacks-linked-to.html "Shut her up! Drag her out!" cried the white man, and the black hand fumbled across Scarlett's face to her mouth. She bit as savagely as she could and then screamed again, and through her screaming she heard the white man swear and realized that there was a third man in the dark road. The black hand dropped from her mouth and the negro leaped away as Big Sam charged at him. "Run, Miss Scarlett!" yelled Sam, grappling with the negro; and Scarlett, shaking and screaming, clutched up the reins and whip and laid them both over the horse. It went off at a jump and she felt the wheels pass over something soft, something resistant. It was the white man who lay in the road where Sam had knocked him down. Maddened by terror, she lashed the horse again and again and it struck a gait that made the buggy rock and sway. Through her terror she was conscious of the sound of feet running behind her and she screamed at the horse to go faster. If that black ape got her again, she would die before he even got his hands upon her. 'Gone with the Wind' http://www.globusz.com/ebooks/GoneWithTheWind/00000054.htm When a knock is heard at the door [a White woman] shudders with nameless horror. The black brute is lurking in the dark, a monstrous beast, crazed with lust. His ferocity is almost demoniacal. A mad bull or tiger could scarcely be more brutal. A whole community is frenzied with horror, with the blind and furious rage for vengeance.3 3 George T. Winston, "The Relations of the Whites to the Negroes," Annals of the American Academy of Political and Social Science, Vol. XVII, (July 1901), pp. 108-109.

I looked up the references. That statement is NOT from or based on either of them. So it is nothing more than that. A statement. If it is, I missed it (I may have in my hast), so please point it out to me.

I did not say I was calling any particular study into question. What I was pointing out is that all (your) roads lead to the Guttmacher Institute...including Dr Henshaw and his pay check. In much that same manner that most of the noise that you will ever hear about the earth being flat these days lead to 'The Flat Earth Society' And what I am STILL calling into question are these particular statements from the Guttmacher Inst that you cited and how they apply to anything in these United States of America:
-
Stanley Henshaw joined the Guttmacher Institute as a Senior Research Associate in 1979 and is currently a Senior Fellow with the Institute. Dr. Henshaw has authored or co-authored over 60 articles and publications on abortion utilization in the United States and internationally, abortion policies and services, teenage pregnancy, unintended pregnancy and family planning. With colleagues at Guttmacher, he conducted two cross-national studies of family planning services and teenage reproductive behavior. Dr. Henshaw has served as expert witness in numerous legal proceedings involving abortion restrictions. For six years, he served as member of the board of directors of the National Abortion Federation (NAF) and received the Christopher Tietze Humanitarian Award from that organization, and in 2005, he joined the board of directors of the Abortion Access Project. Dr. Henshaw holds a Ph.D. in sociology from Columbia University.

The moron that let it get through the gate to make it into print would be immediately fired under my watch. I believe that it was in EXTREMELY poor taste. Most likely racist (if the cartoonist meant what most of us think he meant, it definitely was) And not even a little bit funny. On the other hand, what WAS funny was the news clip of Al Sharpton leading the protest. We are talking about the most powerful man on the planet Earth here. Like the most powerful man on the planet needs Al Sharpton for anything. On the other hand, Al Sharpton needs a cause to lead these days, so it was probably the best thing that's come along for him in a while.

I strongly suggest avoiding electricity. You might try: -use a stronger acid. eg, muratic acid or phosphoric acid....either of which can be purchased at a hardware/home improvement store....commonly used to clean concrete driveways/sidewalds or tile. or -hydrogen peroxide (an oxidizer) from the drugstore In all cases do in well ventilated area (eg, OUTSIDE) and use rubber gloves and eye protection. Heat increases the rate of most all chemical rxns, including oxidation.....but USE WITH CAUTION, esp around acids and oxidizers.

Sorry. I thought I did here: So, I simply will not base anything, including my position on this subject, on a nearly insignificant value (<1%). Merged post follows: Consecutive posts merged Romania? They had to go to 1990 Romania to "substantiate" their statement? Do you feel that this is a valid comparison? I had a coworker from Romania and friends that adopted a pair of children from Romania. I'm no expert on Romania, but from what they communicated to me, and from what I have read, I don't believe that the conditions there, especially in 1990, were/are anywhere near the conditions in the US. 'Guttmacher.org' is a well known pro choice group. So, accepting a statement from Guttmacher on abortion at face value is akin to accepting the shape of the earth from the 'Flat Earth Society'. http://www.alaska.net/~clund/e_djublonskopf/Flatearthsociety.htm If we go to an antiabortion web site, like the Confederation of Catholic Bishops, what kind of statement on the matter do we expect? http://www.usccb.org/prolife/issues/abortion/index.shtml Again, an unsubstantiated statement from a pro choice group. And I can not accept that there is much of a correlation between what goes on in "developing countries" and the US.

This one always comes up. Abortion is a 'forceful act'. The lack of a forceful act is not force. How can someone force someone to not have an abortion. You've made you're point clearly without calling people who are against abortion "the religious hellbent". Merged post follows: Consecutive posts merged Wait a minute. I'm not accepting third world countries data. We're (at least I am) talking about the industrialized nations. Heck you can die from a splinter in some places. That is totally wrong.
-
In 2000, 1.31 million abortions took place. There are about 13,000 abortions each year following rape or incest. Source: Guttmacher Institute,"Induced Abortion Facts in Brief" (2002) ......a "pro-choice" group BTW. That is slightly less than 1%. How can one base a premise on a nearly insignificant percentage of the overall number? Scientists (at least not me or anyone I know) don't normally rely on such figures to base their arguments.
-
What is it exactly that you are planning to do with all of the breast feeding infants in the world? What is it about human life in general that is so inherently valuable? If I had scientific answers to this question, there would be no dilemma. I don't (and I assume neither do you), so here we are. I don't follow your logic. It is like saying that since a person does not exist a few seconds after blowing his/her brains out, they must not have been a person before they blew their brains out.
