  1. Wow. I'm impressed YT. You da man!
  2. I believe that Nancy Reagan had it right. Like human stem cell research, animal testing is wrong unless it is to help find a cure, or alleviate the symptoms of a disease that, specifically, *my* loved one or *I* suffer from..... In all other cases it is just plain immoral and wrong.
  3. Oh. Sorry about your issues post op. Did you have pain and numbness in hand before surgery? It sounds like you are speculating about what might have happened and I sympathize with you. Have you spoken with a malpractise lawyer yet? They can tell you more and they will usually do it for free (first consultation). They may also send you to an unbiased Dr for evaluation. There are time limitations for malpractise in most states. Some time limits are unbelievably short (like 2 yrs, maybe even less in some states?). There is a blog on webmd that may be of use to you. Perhaps you can find some assistance from others that may have similar experience after open heart surg. http://www.webmd.com/

    The Jena 6

I hope that this isn't getting off-thread, but since these kids are (apparently) under 18, why hasn't anyone called for the parents to be held accountable. Like all mindless acts of violence, this problem started at home. In the homes on both sides of the color tracks. The tribal nature of man is perhaps our most disgusting attribute.
  5. I believe that you are confusing charge with number of atoms and superscript with subscript: NiCl2 is One Nickel with Two Chlorines (the 2 should be subscript in this case) One divalently charged Ni (++) is bound to two Cl(-): Ni++(Cl-)2 Charged nickel alone could be written Ni(superscript2+ or superscript++): Ni++ Charged Chlorine could be written Cl(superscript1 or superscript -):Cl- Does that help or confuse you more?

    The Jena 6

Interesting. I thought the issue is that certain high profile people and special interest groups with narrow agendas advocate different sets of rules and the application of the law depending on ethnicity or melanin level.
  7. Although I think Capn's ideas are the best I've heard in a LONG time, another solution might be to let the free market decide how we treat these situations. Those of you who care less about what your fellow passengers (or airport visitors) bring on board the plane (or inside the airport) can fly on airline A from Gate A. Airline A welcomes everyone with open arms and hugs are mandatory. I'll be flying on airline B from Gate B where the passengers are cavity searched, poked and proded 3 times before boarding, there are no flight attendants to serve refreshments on airline B (please grab a bottled water at the door)- they are replaced by big, burly men (or women) trained to kill efficiently at the first sign of trouble, and the pilots carry automatic firearms. All cell phones, laptops, iPods, etc will be thourghly inspected and sniffed electronicly and by trained blood hounds. Anyone wearing fuses, printed circuit boards, batteries, playdough, and blinking lights will be immediately detained (or shot) at Gate B.
  8. Consciousness = awareness of one's own existence in a broader environment. This self awareness or feeling of presence is immediately followed by the need or urge to maintain or preserve self.
  9. That depends...... Are you refering to some molecular level pores like the ones on nuclear membranes (which transport nucleic acids, ribosomes, enzymes, other proteins, carbos, signal molecules, lipids, and other stuff), other pores on other cellular membranes, or the relatively "big" pores that reside on your outer layer skin....the ones that get clogged and cause black heads (which secret various waste products, salts, water and sebum or sebacious oils that Glider mentioned- which includs lipids, triglycerides and free fatty acids, wax esters, squalene, and cholesterol , etc?)
  10. I take a toy gun into a bank and bring it out to play with it in the lobby. Am I really doing anything wrong? It is just a toy and I'm a nice guy (no criminal record anyway) and the stupid bank security guy shot me in the butt! I mean what was he thinking? If he would have checked, he would have known that I am no real threat! It was just a toy! Unfortunately, some acts of stupidity, like kissing rattlesnakes, playing with toy guns in bank lobbies, or wearing weird outfits made of circuit boards, playdough, batteries, and blinking lights, come with an inherently high probability of getting one killed. Why aren't we thanking the SWAT team for showing restraint in not killing her dumb arse? They deserve medals!
  11. Yeah, this is almost as stupid as somebody thinking that someone else would try to blow up a plane by lighting a fuse sticking out of their sneaker..... What were they thinking, huh? Do what you like, but I prefer to leave fashion vs explosive device arguments off of the airplanes that *I* fly on....... Simply stated: I do not want to (make that will not) board a plane with anyone wearing batteries, circuit boards, and/or blinking lights..... Will you? The arguments for freedom of expression are absolutely ridiculous in this case..... I fly a lot and firmly believe that traveling at high speed in a crammed metal tube at 35,000 feet is crazy enough as it is without worrying about idiots like this..... Take off my shoes and belt? Heck yeah! Give me full body cavity search, fire the flight attendants and hire Navy Seals, give the pilots Uzis, and pack us all in there buck friggen necked for all I care. I just want to survive! Please, no giving up freedoms arguments here......they do not apply to little metal tubes at 35,000 feet and 450 plus mph....I willingly give up my freedom for a few hours at a time every time I fly and will continue to give it up.....
  12. It sounds to me like you can do anything that you put your mind to. Are you considering graduate school?
  13. Smarty, Major in biology (or similar, possible animal sciences or agriculture..??). The important thing is to sure that you do extra well in the premed weed out classes (gen chem, organic chem, animal and plant bio, genetics and molec bio, calc, etc) to keep your options open. Work in some different labs and volunteer in hospitals. You probably won't need to decide until the middle of your third year anyway (when you actaully apply to med schools). You'll know by then. Study like a dog but enjoy the ride.
  14. I'm convinced that they (the public schools) believe their mission is to prepare our children for a future in the growing service industry field. On the bright side, they will probably be making those fries with trans-free oil.
  15. How are the charter schools working in your respective states? In this state (AZ), the public schools have, unfortunately, often been ranked 49 out of 50th the last few years. Meanwhile, the governor and state school super keep getting re-elected....but that's another sad story.... The board and super of state schools blame this low ranking on fact that the schools are teaching so many nonenglish speaking students english (but, again, that is also another story......). The 4 highest performing (ranked by standardized test scores) schools in the state are charter schools . These charter schools get state funding (same amount per student as a public school) but the quality of education generally is equivalent to, or in many cases greater than, that of an exclusive private school education (for the most part anyway, a couple of the charter schools are terrible). My son goes to one of the top performing charter schools (a college prep school) and the level of education is absolutely fantastic (at least compared to the local public school he would have gone to otherwise). Unfortunately, there is a big push here to make the charter school curriculum equivalent to the public schools...in effect neutering them. The battle is on in the court system and currently the state school board is winning. The public school board doesn't like being compared against charter school performance year after year and those that can afford to send their kids to private schools are upset about spending thousands of dollars a year while kids that go to these charter schools are getting nearly equiv or equiv education "for nothing".
  16. Einstein walked on the water and I know that its true......... How many people do ya thinnk would drink their own urine if they heard that Einstein drank his......hundreds of thousands?, millions?...... Elvis had nothing on that dude. Did you ever hear about what happened to Einstein's brain? Some guy named Thomas Harvey took it out and kept (most of) it for years in a mayonnaise jar.... http://www.guardian.co.uk/science/2004/apr/08/science.research http://www.newhorizons.org/neuro/diamond_einstein.htm
  17. Blockade by China: Now that is a scary proposition Para! Unfortunately, I believe that we have proven that we won't have the collective where-with-all to do anything about the current crisis until it becomes a mega crisis (perhaps like the one you describe). It may be an unfortunate symptom of chronic poor leadership throughout much of the 20th century and now into the 21st. Our leaders may have been and continue to better at immediate crisis management (Katrina not withstanding perhaps) than planning to achieve goals. What would the world be like today if Kennedy had proclaimed that we would find alternative energy sources because it is necessary and difficult instead of going to the moon because it is difficult? Don't get me wrong, space exploration is important. But, to me at least, the energy crisis is MUCH more important. And like other grand achievements, the "space race" was in responce to a direct crisis situation (a perception of imminent Soviet nuc threat). If DOE was set up more like NASA to accomplish more direct, far reaching, well defined, alt energy goals (perhaps like it was in the begining, when the race was on to build the bomb against a Nazi/Japanese threat), that would be something we could hang our hats on. Perhaps our successes are our own worst enemies sometimes....we have conquered big obstacles in the past, and the assumption is that when push comes to shove, we will simply dispose of this problem in due time and in a similar manner. Regan stated that we will just develop the technology to move to another planet after we use all the resources on this one up. Amazingly, I recently heard the same thing come from the mouths of a couple of VERY bright junior engineers. How can you argue with that scifi mentality? Just my nickel and penny.....
  18. I obviously completely misread/misunderstood that and apologize. Perhaps I was still reeling from our exchange yesterday, which may have shorted some neurons that should connect my retina to my neural cortex, but instead shunted the impulses to my brain stem. Peace. ...........now give me a hug.
  19. I actually apprectiate your (and of course others') 'useful' comments and supporting links and/or sources. It is why I come here. In this particular case, your responce lacked a useful (or even polite) comment. This looks to me like a dry negative stating that what I posted didn't deserve to be here. Insinuating that I'm too lazy to read Wikip "As always, verify with a more credible source prior to relying on this data for decisions or postulates, but here's a good place to start:" If *I* misread what you posted, I apologize. I don't what kind of grudge you have, but I do know that life is too short this. Peace.
  20. So you don't know? You just like posting links?
  21. Interesting! Along those lines, I recently read somewhere (as soon as I can recall where, I will post the source) that more energy is used to manufacture an automobile (making the steel, making and forming the plastics, running the factories, making and transporting parts, etc...) than will be used driving the vehicle during its entire useful lifetime (I believe that they assumed something like a 15 yr average lifespan). The argument was also used against hybrid and electric only vehicles. For example, it was stated that by the time you account for the above and then toxic waste dipsosal related to the huge batteries, that these are a net energy loss compared to petro gas vehicles. Of course I am skeptical of the validity of these statements. For example, the info could have come directly from Cheney's press office.....I"M JOKING. But does anyone know more about this that they could share?
  22. Can you clarify how this might impact discussions where evolution/creationist viewpoints collide? Thanks
  23. I only recall images of internet ads with young, very attractive, females. Everything else is a blurr. I believe that they are usually for dating sites. They seem to pop up everywhere in relatively benign locations, like yahoo news. Either I'm a real sicko or they have it down to a science. I hate to think what this is doing to me subconsciously.....
