My mom is allergic to red 40 and yellow 5.

Physicist calculates 67% probability of God's existence
Mr Skeptic replied to bascule's topic in Trash Can
I think the 50% chance is before looking at any evidence -- and yes, it is completely arbitrary, and therefore useless assumption, leading to an equally arbitrary and equally useless conclusion. -
Clear Evidence Waterboarding Works (but may still be a bad idea)
Mr Skeptic replied to Pangloss's topic in Politics
I think a difference is that the punishment is well-defined, whereas the torture is more of a "we will hurt you until you do what we want" kind of thing. Punishment is more about justice, and torture is more about trying to override someone's free will. -
Perhaps for more fun, you can use soap to power a tiny boat. Just put a cube of soap on the back of your boat, and place it in a large body of water, and the surface tension effects will propel your boat. Looks like YT beat me to it.

I voted for earth only, but I must say I am just speculating and quite biased. When abiogenesis is understood better I would have a better idea. Even if there were technologically advanced life out there, I doubt that we would find it any time soon if at all. The time delay on messages alone is far greater than we have been a civilized race, then there is signal strength, noise, and the chance that they simply don't want to reply.

Could you tell me more about this frozen shoulder thing? My brother has a problem with his arm that nobody knows anything about.

But what do you mean by "this minute"? The galaxy is big, and someone who is alive this minute could die out before we could contact them. So should we count those we could listen to right now as as those we could listen to broadcasts from right now, or those that are currently alive but far away?

#1 seems the best. I think #4 may eventually be obsoleted (by growing our own blood), but for now it will be very useful. Two of these are about dinosaurs, so I think the guy has been watching too much Jurassic Park. Overall, it's a decent list.

I'm not really sure, but I think biological weapons are outlawed by international treaty? Yup: Doesn't seem like bioweapons is a particularly hot field, except for defense. To be honest, I think bioweapons are more scary than nukes.

It may seem a bit stupid, but remember that chemists (or alchemists) had very few tools back then, so tasting chemicals may have been one way to identify things. Don't forget that some of them were as mad as a hatter as well

Need help wrapping Christmas present for next year (2008)…
Mr Skeptic replied to SloppyB's topic in Projects
I'd go for concrete (much tougher than cement) with some steel reinforcement. You might not need the safe, and it would probably not be cost-effective if you plan to weld it shut and destroy it anyways. If you do get a metal container, you should probably rough the edges so it is not easy to unstick from the concrete. -
Yeah, Einstein might think you are silly and tell you the answer is 6, right?

Or finding defenses against viral attacks. That would have the bonus of being legal

Vicks VapoRub on testicles...
Mr Skeptic replied to Daecon's topic in Anatomy, Physiology and Neuroscience
I read a story about some girl using mint toothpaste on a blowjob because she didn't like the taste. He, he. The testicles are probably far less sensitive since they have skin. -
He didn't say that they can, only that you have not demonstrated that they cannot. Also, mathematicians have no trouble counting some infinities, but larger infinities are uncountable.

Best language for Artificial Intelligent Machines
Mr Skeptic replied to DivideByZero's topic in The Lounge
If you want to use an artificial language, I suggest you make or use one that translates directly into logic (eg predicate logic, if you count that as 'language'). If you want to use a human language, use your native tongue. But if you can make an AI that can learn a language, then you must be, at the very least, a genius. I hope you learn something then, and have fun. I remember one of my professors saying how children learning Esperanto all made similar modifications to it. Something to do with innate language ability and Esperanto not matching it. However, my googling skills have not found anything to back that up, so he may have been mistaken or maybe I misunderstood it. Also, there are other artificial languages, and I doubt Esperanto would be the best one. -
Solution: x = 1/y y = y z = y^2 y may be anything but 0, +/- infinity, +/- 1. There are then an infinite number of solutions, as would be expected from 2 equations and 3 unknowns. Perhaps there is something missing here?

Best language for Artificial Intelligent Machines
Mr Skeptic replied to DivideByZero's topic in The Lounge
Esperanto isn't any human language. -
Don't forget the solstice celebration too!

A space elevator? It might be possible within a couple decades, but I doubt one will be built anytime soon (can you say "terrorist target"?). I think that to do proper space travel we will need nuclear powered rockets, be they big or little. Also, we would need a huge amount of engineering per person, so I'm not sure how much population could actually be sustained off earth.

What do the 1st and most recent issues of Consumer Reports have in common?
Mr Skeptic replied to Pangloss's topic in Politics
I've eaten candy that was under a couch for at least a year. Mostly to freak out my cousin (I know dry sugar doesn't spoil). -
Why would you want to limit your data to that of the last 30 years to predict things more than 30 years in advance?
