  1. Actually the term U.F.O. generally refers to things like clouds, airplanes, weather balloons, meteors, etc., which have not been identified as such by the speaker at that time.
  2. pat, we won't help unless you can show you did some work. What have you got so far? Charlatan, pat specifically asked about not forming proteins (that's covalent).
  3. The phrase "at the expense of" is simply accurate, no moral judgement required. 5 is smaller than 15 just like -5 is smaller than 5. Although since the transactions are voluntary, the transactions should all be profitable or at least neutral. That doesn't in any way make the problem self-correcting. Self-limiting, yes, but suppose the trade is unfair due to a permanent imbalance in power. Eg if the merchant is the only one who can travel, and there are other apple and corn farmers, then the merchant is almost guaranteed to get the larger portion always, due to his superior bargaining position.
  4. I know, I was just yanking your chain. I think that the scarcity, danger, and unpredictability of lava would not be conductive to using it for technological advancement. Simply hitting a piece of metal with a hammer would do the job nicely, wherever and at any time, in a controllable manner. It's not like its technologically challenging to make things hot.
  5. What if they first let the lava solidify into a glassy substance and then used it to manufacture sharpened tools?
  6. Well granted, the couple of days between a hurricane being predicted to hit a city and the time it hits, isn't the best time to be strengthening levees, but could it have been done?
  7. i didn't think of that before, and i can't quite see it's significance. we are selfish, yet we became social....meaning:confused: Scenario: selfish person A starts killing other people and taking their valuables. Therefore selfish person A is better off and prospers and there is no hope for society and no one will bother to do anything about it. Or will they? Would a rational but totally and completely selfish person behave as Person A in the real world? Why or why not?
  8. Duh. Among us humans we're always better off focusing on ourselves, so many of us do so if we can get away with it. The fact of the matter is, we evolved with and despite this problem into a social species. Now, how do you think the rest of the group responds to selfishness? We instinctively seek justice, revenge, fairness. Sometimes even when we could have gotten away with selfishness. On the other hand, the social insects are such that the queen's offspring are more related to everyone in the hive than the worker's offspring would be. Hence, greed in counterproductive and they give selflessly to the hive.
  9. It would have been much worse for Obama had this been one of the wells drilled after Obama gave the go-ahead, one of the ones that are "a compromise plan to boost domestic energy production in the interim before renewable energy was widely available, while creating jobs and still protecting the environment. "
  10. So again to paraphrase: "We won't use nuclear weapons against non-nuclear states even in the case of a biological or chemical attack. Unless we decide otherwise."
  11. Hm, searching for that fan only gave 2 results, and neither of them were lists of fans. This site seems to have fans, but they are separate from the engine. It does also have a lift calculator. http://www.hoverhawk.com/
  12. Hair is probably too expensive, and far more so if it is intended for the initial cleanup.
  13. Pitch and tar pits are an example; in these cases the volatiles have mostly evaporated. I do recall there being natural oil leaks in the middle east, and the oil was used as low quality lamp oil (with the tar still in it of course).
  14. All correct. Yes. The sun spits out energy throughout the universe, increasing the universe's entropy. Life just slowed the rate of entropy increase, but did not overall reverse it, as required.
  15. Or to put it another way, "There is no non-nuclear state that we cannot easily crush without the use of nuclear weapons."
  16. I think some pre-processing is done along the optic nerve as well. The study of optical illusions gives some clues as to the overall processing.
  17. I doubt that would even be possible with any point particle, even theoretical ones, even with forces other than EM. Storing potential energy would require interaction with something else.
  18. Well consider the functional groups on these: Asn: Leu: Be careful not to include the part of the molecule that would form the C-N backbone.
  19. If people voluntarily surrender their rights out of fear, out of a sense that they must be respectful to the law, because they feel socially obligated to, etc., do they still have these rights? Or just an illusion of them? If most people cooperate in giving away their rights, it becomes much easier for the police to pressure others into doing so as well, such as harassing you with minor traffic violations. Maybe you didn't notice, but I never said it would be safe nor polite. I'll also add that it might not be cheap either. I would much rather other people do this, lots of other people. Also, it's perfectly possible to respect cops while acting disrespectfully toward them. Merged post follows: Consecutive posts merged What if he doesn't treat you with a reasonable amount of respect? What if he uses his position of power and authority, social conventions, or deceit, to pressure you into giving up your rights? If cops generally respected people's rights and trust I would have an awful lot more respect for them. It would, of course, make their job much harder -- which is exactly why I would have so much respect for that.
  20. Well I don't think H2O2 would be much of a drug. It's really quite cheap and there's no patent for it, although I suppose it would be consumed in large quantities. That and our enzymes will make it disappear quite quickly, definitely before reaching the bloodstream. Still, that is not to say that it can't have an effect, especially if it kills some stuff on the mucous membranes or influences gene expression. It would certainly be worth investigating (in a scientific study, not just randomly drink chemicals and hope your problems go away).
  21. Now that's more interesting. However, I can't say I'm too surprised that Project Sign would see signs of extraterrestrial intelligence, nor conversely that Project Grudge would conclude otherwise.
  22. And as a real environmentalist, I wholeheartedly support nuclear power, and would like to see them replace coal power plants as quickly as possible.
  23. This one reminded me of this thread. (you can click on it to get a larger view)
  24. I'd have to agree that the "well-rounded" education is too round. I think it's important, but that it's overdone. I think schools should do more to foster a love of learning in their students (and the parents should do the same). I think it's pretty ridiculous we don't have a proper free, online curriculum for education at all levels. I mean, with just a fraction of the cost of textbooks bought by students, we could have a pretty nice online education. It wouldn't surprise me if in addition to being cheaper it were also far better, considering we'd have our best and brightest writing the curriculum, rather than a bunch of teachers who may or may not know more than their students. It could even still be done in childcare centers schools with a teacher to supervise and answer questions.
  25. The outside of the pot? If your flame is methane, CH4, than the reaction is 2[CH4] + 3[O2] --> 2[CO2] + 4[H2O] That is, twice as much water as CO2. If your pot is cold enough, then this water could condense onto the sides.
