I am currently the proud owner of a 2000 model Citroen Xsara 1.4i, with most of the trimmings. Which is nice. Oh dear.

You did a hell of a lot more than I did - on calculus, we just about crawled up to power series and Taylor expansions of one variable. But then again, we've proved bloody everything under the sun up until that point, so maybe we'll get going this year.
-
Well, what frame of reference are we talking about here, for a start?
-
I was looking at being an actuary; however, when I got my mark of 45% in Probability A, I thought otherwise No idea what to do now; for anyone that would like to give me suggestions, I'm going to be doing my Masters, and will be (mainly) a purist.

No, General Relativity covers that. Same kind of math, but much more involved.
-
I'm not entirely convinced you've got this right. When you're talking about relativistic problems, you need to clearly state what inertial frame you're in and what exactly is going on. Moreover, I'm not even sure you can apply special relativity to this problem, because these laws only apply when you're in a non-accelerating (i.e. inertial) frame of reference. This obviously isn't true for circular motion; you're constantly accelerating towards the centre of the circle.
-
I'm not entirely sure you've thought the entire length contraction argument through. Why does the circumference change, yet the radius remain constant?
-
Well, how can you have the number of digits in "the largest number possible"? you can't have the largest number in a numerical sense because I can always add 1 to it and shove it back at you. Hence, we can't say infinity is a specific number - we can only use it in a conceptual context.

It's one of these definition threads again, isn't it? To an observer, it wouldn't be a circle. In a mathematical context, it would be. Probably.

Glad it's all working out and the bot is still running. I've just got back from Ireland on holiday, so I'm a bit out of touch, but if you all have problems or whatever, give me a shout or post here.
-
Okay, #sfn is officially up: quartz is our little bot that sits and keeps the place open. Doesn't have many features, but he does have a google search facility. In IRC, type "quartz google your phrase here" to display the first result from the google search of "your phrase here". Alternatively, use: "quartz google 7 your phrase here" to display the 7th result, and so on... I'm going on holiday now, and I expect to see a full IRC room when I get back Hope you all enjoy the bot, see you in a couple weeks.

I'm crying now. (PS: Everyone get on IRC or I'll get the beating stick out)

Sorry, I moved this from Announcements because I really think the "find an admin" thread should be kept clear and concise. The difference is that the admins have access to the admin cp, giving them the ability to edit user accounts, edit the way the forums look, and all sorts of things. Basically, they're gods. Moderators, on the other hand, can only delete/edit/move/etc posts from forum to forum as well as some minor things like viewing user options, approving posts, banning users, etc.

I don't really want to get drawn into this debate because as far as I can see, it's just a matter of definition, and I really, really hate to argue over such minute and tedious things. Please don't let this stop you though

I've heard of some of those things, especially in my Geometry to Groups notes. We cover metric spaces/Hilbert spaces next year in my Algebra I module.

Ooh, you got the coursework. I got the nice MA1 exam, which I liked a lot.

The problem is that when you type the & into vB, it cleverly converts it into the html symbol for an ampersand; namely & which is why you're having problems. When I get back from holiday, I'll fix it; it's a fairly simple fix. Thanks for highlighting the problem though.

Doesn't JaKiri have that already? (without the gun bit at the end)
-
Well we did, but that kindof fell through the floor. The network was crappy and nobody ever turned up in there. At least this way we have control over the channel, not PF.
-
Yes indeed. Personally I think it's wholly unfair to shun other students whilst concentrating on a select bunch, but I suppose that's just the way it is.
-
We're working on it. I've posted something in the mod forum to blike about setting it up.

To me (at least) it seems like there are a heck of a lot of interpretations of Quantum Theory and a lot of different Quantum Gravity theories. My concern is similar to what happened to a lot of mathematics some time ago; a lot of theories were written without being properly reviewed first. People naturally assumed these theories in their calculations, and as a result they broke rather spectacularly. It was only noticed when different theories that should give the same results, didn't. I'm not particularly well informed in this area of Physics, but is this opinion shared by anyone else?
-
Hmm. I think part of the problem is that people go on and then just don't wait for someone else to come on if nobody's in, so people just end up leaving. I'll make a plea to the general community now: PLEASE get on IRC and stay put while you're online; that way we're bound to get more than a few people staying around at any one time. It doesn't waste hardly any bandwidth, and it's a fun way to chat in realtime to the other guys on the forum. Maybe if nobody's there, just get a friend or two to come on or something, because I'd like to see the IRC room grow quite a bit.

Did anyone actually read this? Besides me?

Not enough (PS: anyone seen him, since like, forever?)
