I think it's a great idea (from the mouth of an avid sci-fi reader ). Are you thinking of something along the lines of roleplaying or short stories or a mixture of the two? I've known these types of forums to be quite popular elsewhere.

I'm sure I must have answered this question a thousand times. Different types of CPUs have different instruction codes. If you write a program for one platform, this does not necessarily mean that the instructions are the same for any other platform.

That's right. If you can do, getting more RAM is a much more sensible alternative to increasing virtual memory.

No; the reason your system will run faster with more physical RAM is that it has to write less pages to the hard disk (i.e. your virtual memory) - increasing virtual memory will likely make your system run slower.

I would personally say they're pretty useful for carrying files around, since more or less everyone has a cd writer. Good for backups too.
