Happy Viewing -- Server is at full optimization for all your science needs
Dave replied to kenel's topic in The Lounge
I forgot the bandwidth usage, but it's something like 1gb/day. Pretty busy site, all things considered. -
In my honest opinion, yes, it is. The problem with teaching yourself this kind of curriculum is the fact that it's extremely complex to start out with. You have to start at a very basic level (in some cases, axioms) and then work your way up. Analysis is a key part of any mathematics course, which means you're going to have to deal with delta-epsilon arguments (very confusing at first) and various other bits. It always helps to have someone to bounce your ideas off of. I've never been big into philosophy, but I should think studying this in the second year would help because your mindset will be a lot more adapted to logical thought. Go to uni Seriously, I would considering going to some kind of college course or something like that. You'll probably find that the volume of stuff you have to do is best learned by a rigorous set of lecture courses and assignments. It makes the whole thing a lot more managable.

Doesn't MATLAB use the Maple engine? (Mathematica will pwn Matlab any day of the week )

One thread doesn't really count as exceptional interest. We've condensed a lot of fora down, so we're not looking to open a new one without a very good reason.

No problem 5614: I believe he was just pointing out somewhere that he could get a second opinion from. No real harm done tbh.

I guess it's true what they say then: Fox is the devil

Yeah, I wouldn't be surprised. I don't listen to it because it's full of trashy trash most of the time, and they just don't shut up about Iraq and the "war on terrorism".

Just get the SAS in. They'll take care of it. It also looks like they're murdering those hostages, which isn't a great surprise. I have to say that it's starting to get to me quite a lot now: I feel like going and beating Tony Blair and George Bush over the head to try and knock some sense into them. I saw this from a BBC News Online article: Couldn't help but think "I bet those hostages aren't thinking about that right now".

I think the league tables need to be taken with a rather large grain of salt. Anyhow, back on topic. Whatever that was.

I think the first? Not sure.

Quite frankly, I find it hard to believe that Warwick would be ranked 18th for maths. Not to blow my own trumpet or anything, but it is one of the best universities in the country and is definately on a parr with Nottingham.

Was just using his form of doing it, although personally I think the 'p' should come with the 'lee'.

Look: if you allow any program access to a port by telling the firewall to let it have access, that isn't "bypassing" the firewall. That's going through it because you let the firewall open the port. Trying to bypass a firewall is by no means an easy task. I'm not going to tell you how to actively exploit something as annoying as the Messenger service, but bear in mind you're not going to be in peoples' good books if you go around displaying exceptionally annoying pop-up messages whilst they're working or whatever.
-
Personlly I'd say "am-plee-ah-tive".

That's because there isn't a good solution to it. Even if they were to go and kill bin Laden, he'd be acclaimed as a martyr and some other lunatic will come up to take his place. Hence, we're in rather a large pickle as to what to do, because as it stands this could go on for a century or more. Bush has started something that nobody knows how to stop.
-
Should be interesting. I shall have to watch that on Fox News over here. Thanks for pointing this out, would never have known otherwise
-
Quite. We're only likely to open a new forum if there's exceptional interest in that specific area, but I don't think I've ever seen a thread on such things.
-
Obviously if you're going to allow it access to listen on that port, then you're going to have problems with people sending you popups. The entire point of a firewall is to stop information getting through to the programs and hence if you allow non-essential programs such as the messenger service to listen on these posts, you're going to run into problems. Why the obsession with the Messenger service though? It's nothing particularly special, just turn it off.

If the drive doesn't work properly to start with, you may misinterpret this as being an IDE bus error - which I have found is almost never the case. Always start with the simplest situation first: get the hard drive jumper configuration set to master, then put it on a single IDE bus with nothing else on it. Then you can rule out hdd failure, which is a whole lot more common than the bus failing. After that, do the same for the other hdd, then set one as master and t'other as slave.

Nope, he's at Nottingham Uni, I'm over at Warwick. We have 3 terms over here, I guess you call it trimesters.

I'm pretty sure there's a load of free ones out there, because they're popular with the gamers.

Well, your standard cylindrical change of co-ordinates is: [math]\begin{cases} x = r \cos\theta\\ y = r \sin\theta\\ z = z \end{cases} [/math] Then if you wanted, for example, to find the volume of a basic cylinder of height h and radius r0, the set representing this would be: [math]\left\{ (r,\theta,z) \; \vert \; r \in [0, r_{0}], \theta \in [0,2\pi], z \in [0, h] \right\}[/math] From there, it's pretty straightforward to set up a triple integral to find your volume. Of course, this is complete overkill for a simple cylinder, but demonstrates the method pretty well.

In practice, you're never going to be asked to do this. At most, you'll be asked for a 3D equilibrium point. For larger dimensions, it's better to use something like Mathematica to solve the equations for you.

Quite. They have ICBM's if I remember rightly.
