Area of contact between two spheres/size of 'point'
Shadow replied to chris_75's topic in Mathematics
In real life you can never have a perfect sphere, which is probably why you can't imagine them meeting in a point; they never do. In real life, the imperfections of the sphere cause the spheres to meet in a 'point' that has area. That is not so in pure maths, where one deals with perfectly round spheres. Cheers, Gabe -
Hey there all, this might be a pretty stupid question, but is there a method that allows one to extract the function from a graph? I know that one graph can represent many different functions, but if I didn't care which one, as long as that function would produce the same graph when plotted. Also, I don't mean functions that look like [math]f(x)=\begin{cases} \mbox{something} & \mbox{if } \mbox{something} \\ \mbox{something else} & \mbox{if } \mbox{something else} \\ \mbox{still something else} & \mbox{if } \mbox{still something else} \\ \mbox{\vdots}&\mbox{\vdots} \end{cases} [/math] ..and have a separate condition for every point. I know that one can't represent some functions in any other way, but let's restrict this to functions that can be represented in some meaningful way. Cheers, Gabe

It really does help to see how many people try and stop on the same day I do. It's a reminder that I'm not alone, and that there are other people around the world who are going through something similar. I "quit" smoking a couple of time before, and what basically happened was that I woke up one day and was "done". I didn't need any gum or anything, I just forced myself to stop. And yeah, I felt like crap for a couple of days, but after that it was fine. I would "be finished" for as long as I had promised myself, and then willingly started again. Now, ever since September, I have been promising myself to stop on New Years. It's been 3 months since that decision, and I have had plenty of time to think it over. Lots of times, I got the "Well, how about you quit but you allow yourself to smoke at party's. Or when you're with your friends. Or when your on tournaments. Or anything." voice in my head. Thankfully, I've always resisted, and told my self to eff off with that bull. Up until recently it had worked, until I discovered like two or three specific situations where I knew that I would have a smoke no matter what, so I allowed myself to have a cigarette in these situations. Luckily, I fell asleep and when I woke up the next morning I had no clue what those situations were So I guess I'm safe. Anyway, good luck to us all, I hope it works this time, and for good. Cheers, Gabe

unfortunately for me, I just searched for nickname and handle. I knew there was a word I was missing...so stupid of me. My apologies.

Not to go off topic here, but care to share? I probably won't understand, but...well, I am a curious person Cheers, Gabe

Hey all, I was inspired by this thread, and after a quick search discovered that a thread like this hadn't been made before. As the name suggests, post the meaning of your nick. Here's mine: A long long time ago, in a galaxy not-so-far away, around the age of twelve or thirteen, I was unsuccessfully trying to come up with a nick. Everyone had one back then, and I didn't want to be left out. Unfortunately, my imagination was, and still is, very limited, meaning I had little luck. One day, I was watching TV, a program about computer game review sites. They were interviewing one of their moderators, which called himself Shadow. I though, hey, that's not half bad. It sounded good, and the first three letters where the same as in my surname. I also identified with it because back then I pretty much was a shadow; as unnoticeable as it gets. So, I adopted that nick for some time. After having an incident on a server of a game I was playing, I decided to change my name, and came up (using my own brains, yay!) with Avenging Angel. My first name is Gabriel, so that worked, and I wanted something that to me still had a connection to my previous nick; Avenging Angel and Shadow both sound kinda...'dark' to me. Anyway, that became my nick for some time. Unfortunately, it was too long, so I had to drop the 'Avenging' part, which resulted in people constantly thinking I was a girl (although I'll admit that had its advantages and made for a couple of good laughs) so I eventually just went back to Shadow. I also use the nick Gabe a lot of times, because I'm just too lazy to think of a new one. What about you? Cheers, Gabe

Can Artificial Intelligence Ever Match Humans?
Shadow replied to jimmydasaint's topic in Computer Science
Wow, thanks for that. I never even heard about NuPIC. -
Well, I find it pointless when only one person can win. If we were to simulate senate/parliament/something similar elections, I think it'd be more interesting...but also a little more difficult to orchestrate ) Cheers, Gabe

I missed your art/science question ajb. I believe it is a point of view. One can think of the universe in a way that suggests 1+1 always equaled two, and it just took humankind time before they figured it out. And it's true; one atom and another atom always made two atoms, regardless of whether some race on a blue planet knew about it or not. Or, one can again think of the universe as a fixed thing, but there being an infinite way of expressing the laws by which it is governed. For example, humans created the number one, the number two, the signs plus and equals, and then described this mathematical relation in this way. While it was always true, we created the notation and the system by which this is expressed. I like to think of it as a combination of the two; creating on the basis of discovery. Cheers, Gabe PS.: hell_ever, I believe the "General Mathematics" sub-forum is suitable for discussions regarding Number Theory )

how can it be more logical and easier than nature if mathematics are, at least according to me, the most fundamental laws by which nature must abide, thus being an integral part of nature itself? )

Can Artificial Intelligence Ever Match Humans?
Shadow replied to jimmydasaint's topic in Computer Science
Thanks for your response bascule ) I know they're universal, but I meant that they have to be programmed to do even a simple task. So I guess I could have just cut all of that down to a simple sentence; computers are inferior to humans because they can't learn. Which renders my post pointless, because everyone already knows that I was wondering though, if an AI as complex as a human were ever created, would it be conscious of everything it's "brain" does? -
I read it in much the same way, except as an added bonus I though it was "playing" instead of "paying". I even said so in my original post, but then decided to edit it out for the sake of propriety )

The video is...educational ) I remember a couple of people from the school I used to go to doing the same thing to their much-despised teacher. I wonder how it turned out, if they actually accepted the payment in pennies or not. Cheers, Gabe

Pure human curiosity. I just love finding out how things work. (Un)fortunately, that sets cardinality is finite; I hate proofs (among other things) ) Cheers, Gabe

I am sorry, I meant right but explained wrong; must have been completely out of it when I wrote that. The frequencies are of course the same; frequency = vibrations per second. I guess the difference in sound is caused by the difference of the materials that are vibrated. That said, all you have to do is extract the frequencies from the MIDI/Wav, which I have no idea how to do but which shouldn't be that complicated, and then, as I said before, just compare the frequencies with a chart, alternatively using a program such as this. I couldn't find a program that does both of these things at once, but maybe a more thorough search will yield better results. Cheers, and my apologies for the rubbish I wrote once more, Gabe
