  1. I wish Egypt and Saudi Arabia the best of luck. California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger joined a crowd of 10,000 at a pro-Israel rally Sunday organized by the Jewish Federation Council of Los Angeles: http://www.jpost.com/servlet/Satellite?c=JPArticle&cid=1153291983753&pagename=JPost%2FJPArticle%2FShowFull And a similar rally in the UK had about 7,500 people, it was arranged at very short notice. 90 rockets fell on Israel on Sunday: http://www.jpost.com/servlet/Satellite?cid=1153291978356&pagename=JPost%2FJPArticle%2FShowFull Hezbollah left Israel in peace all Monday morning, but have now resumed attacks in the afternoon.
  2. That only works on a few monitors... but still try all possibilities! And like i_a said. Many of the latest drivers for graphics cards allow the user to rotate the screen virtually. For my nVidia drivers this is what I do to get to the rotation options: Desktop Right click > properties Settings tab Advanced (I then click on the name of my graphics card - top right tab) Then there's a little green arrow pointing outwards on the left of the window, click that to expand and get a menu Select NVRotate Et voila!
  3. RocketMan: can you give me a reliable source which talks of this dispute between scientists regarding the explanation for lifter's lift. I read about them, although it was a few months ago, but the way I remember it scientists were certain it was ionic wind that caused the lift...
  4. OK, I got that part. What I don't understand is what you want. Do you want to click a button and all the labels are given a caption (number)? And you want them to be given different captions (numbers) each time you click the button? If not then you could just have: Private Sub cmd1_Click() lblOne = "1" lblTwo = "2" lblThree = "3" ' etc etc until lblNine End Sub
  5. That's one of the better animations I've seen guardian, thanks. It's a small technicality that means nothing can (and I'm just making this up, so don't try and pick holes in it!) directly travel faster than light. What I mean is that no signal, no particle, no wave and nothing that could be used to transmit data could ever travel faster than c. However things can "indirectly" travel faster than c. I'll give an example: if you hold a laser beam up at a ceiling (say it's pointing north) and then rotate the laser so it's point, say, north-east. Due to the distance between the laser source and the dot on the ceiling the dot on the ceiling will move quicker than the laser source. If you moved the laser source quick enough then the dot on the ceiling would move quicker than c. Another technicality. SR does not say nothing can travel faster than c. It actually says that nothing can cross the "c-barrier". Meaning that if something came into existence travelling faster than c then that could be possible, it could not however slow down to sub-c speeds. However from other theories and experimental data the majority of scientists agree that no such particle exists.
  6. Yep. Especially when dealing with quantum effects. Kyrisch: any site which makes such a fundemental mistake as insisting that entanglement allows instantaneous communication cannot really be trusted. Nice picture from The Matrix though.
  7. I'd agree with MattC. If all you want is to be able to run things like Mathematica quickly all you need is a decent CPU and RAM. If you want games then obviously a decent graphics card is required, but if not I'd still suggest you get one, it takes a bit of the strain off the CPU. As for an actual suggestion, it depends on how much you want to spend. A 3GHz Intel processor with 1GB of RAM sounds good, but might be way outside your price limit. Also do you have any brand preference? Dell make good laptops, although as with all Dell computers you will be paying partly for the name. Having said that obviously many thousands/millions of people seem to think it is worth the price, I am with them. Although when talking about desktops I think you should build your own, if possible, although obviously with laptops you can't. Or you could, technically, but you know what I mean (YT - thinking of you!).
  8. Just to post a few links: 150 missiles fell on Israel yesterday (Saturday 22nd): http://www.israelnationalnews.com/news.php3?id=108060 The BBC seems to have failed to mention that one. 10 explosions killed 2 in Haifa, just after the French Foreign Minister left the city (Sunday 23rd): http://www.israelnationalnews.com/news.php3?id=108103 Israeli forces have occupied a small village in southern Lebanon. "Security forces in the area report they found scores of Katyusha shells, missile storage rooms and missile-launchers concealed in the village's mosque." (Sunday 23rd): http://www.israelnationalnews.com/news.php3?id=108063 and the same story (Israeli forces have taken a Lebanese village) which also says Syria is ready to have talks with the USA about solving the crisis: http://www.sky.com/skynews/article/0,,30200-13534350,00.html Israel has agreed to deploying a multi-national force in Lebanon (Sunday 23rd): http://www.haaretz.com/hasen/spages/741704.html Lebanese Foreign Minister: Abducted soldiers in 'good health' (Sunday 23rd): http://www.haaretz.com/hasen/spages/741445.html And finally; in a Sky poll of over 1,000,000 (1 million) people 86.95% say that Israel's attack on Lebanon is justified: http://www.sky.com/skynews/polls/displayresults/1,,91153-1003515-1,00.html
  9. I agree with Callipygous.
  10. Nicely said mooeypoo
  11. I'm confused what you are trying to do. You have 9 labels, in a square shape, each holding an integer 1-9. What do you want the prog to do? Number all the squares? And presumably you want it to number them differently each time, you don't want: lbl1 = "1" lbl2 = "2" Can you post your non-working code, maybe I'll get a better idea.
  12. I haven't read all of the above. I assume someone has pointed out this is anomalous dispersion. Mowgli: the article was from 2000, a bit out of date. Relativity is not violated, there's been 6 years of research on negative index materials, scientists are quite sure that no information travels faster than c and therefore relativity is not violated.
  13. Thanks for the info YT. Yeah those iPod things are good. But they're not only for iPods. You can plug it into anything with a headphone jack (stereo, 3.5mm) and it will transmit the signal as an FM radio wave. My one comes with 4 frequency options and can either be powered by batteries or an in-car power lead. These also means that if you had a cassette you wanted to listen to, but no cassette player you could get one of those hand-held cassette players, put it down in the car, plug in the FM transmitter and listen to the cassette via the car radio. And you can get them for more like $10 (USD) or £5 (UK) from ebay.
  14. I haven't really looked at the papers much, but here's something that popped into my head as soon as read your post: There is, as far as I am aware, nothing stops there from being a white hole (opposite of a black hole). But that doesn't mean they exist. I'll take your word that those papers say that it is possible for a wormhole to exist, but that doesn't mean they do. Having said that they might! But they've never been observed and I think that experimental data, so far, suggests they do not.
  15. OK. What kind of mods have you implemented? What I'm getting at is that do these remote control blockers have the potential (with say a power upgrade) the ability to mess with CCTV? Or do you need to add something (say a whole new output component)? Or is what you've got vastly different from what is on the market. Just a quick google search came up with this design: http://www.electronic-circuits-diagrams.com/funimages/4.gif or this: http://www.aaroncake.net/circuits/jammer.htm or you can buy from here: http://www.gadgetsuk.com/Remote-control-jammer-p-16266.html One question regarding the jammers... do you need to hold down the button to continually block the remote signal? Or can you just give on pulse which will disable the remote receiver until, say, it is turned off?
  16. Just because support is ending doesn't mean suddenly everyone will leave win98. I'm on a win95 computer! Sure it's the only computer on 95 where I am (work experience - Medical Physics dept. at a hospital) but it is still working fine! Also remember that win98 is soo old that there are very few, if any, people who are still looking for loopholes in the OS, so it's not like many, if any, updates are required.
  17. Woa, the thread was saying that hundreds of scientists have signed against this act, why is everyone acting as though it is definately going to be passed? Or is that what it is like, will they pay no attention to the signatures? (I don't know, I'm asking) Also even if it does pass I don't think it's such a bad thing, as long as they are not used. If, for example, countries like those in the Mid East and N Korea etc. know that America could use nukes against them then maybe it would be a good deterrent. On the other hand if America did use nukes the results could be quite bad. Having said that if America dropped a nuke on say, Iran, then assuming Iran does not have its own nukes it would not become a nuclear war as the Iranians could not respond with their own nukes. And face it, if you don't have nukes you can't go to war with someone who has nukes and has already used them against you! This is just the other side of the argument!
  18. Yeah exactly, no one follows these unrealistically low limits. Recently when I was visiting unis I went on some longer trips. On motorways where there are road works (1 lane closed) the speed limit is reduced to 40mph and further more they "average speed" cameras, which record your number plate and time you between points. This meant you had to keep to the speed limit. If you don't want to travel at the speed limit you don't have to. But for those who want to and feel comfortable they should be able to. There's somewhere in Europe, maybe Germany(?) which has speed limit free roads, only the big roads, I don't know if they are the equivolent of motorways... but whatever, I like the idea. Especially on roads with many lanes, you can have people driving at 70mph on the inside and people who wanna do 100mph should be allowed to do so. So back to the point: 5614 for president!
  19. Kill? No. If you can't drive properly then you can go in the "slow lane" but if you can drive properly then you don't need to be limited to 70mph on a massive empty motorway!

    World War III

    Good point.
  21. If Israel has definite proof that Iran is about to make nukes then, just as they did in the 80s with Iraq, I belive they would strike the nuclear installations and ensure Iran does not get nukes. However, unless there is definitive proof I don't think Israel can because the region is too unstable and due to political pressure. Starting a war with Iran doesn't sound such a good idea at the moment. However like you said, if Iran manages to get nukes then we have a whole new (and bigger) problem on our hands, it must not get to this stage. If any other country (other than Israel) would attack Iran it would be America, but seeing as they're in both Afghanistan and Iraq already I don't think they can/will do anything about it until it is too late.

    World War III

Ye, Israel could. But would they? Israel would need a totally solid and amazing reason for which they could justify such an attack. By the time this comes it could be too late. Israel has come under attack, politically, for small things in the past. If they went to war with Syria/Iran they would need a bloody good reason, and no, the fact they are not safe countries is not good enough. There are people who are against Israel now. Imagine how big it would get if it spread to Syria/Iran as well. It's just not something really worth discussion currently.
  23. Those 3 are very good uses! And err, from what you said in the quote, are they just those normal ones you can build (free circuit designs around the net) or pick up in the local electronics/gadget shop for £5??? I know they jam the TV, but when you said about PIR + CCTV etc. I wondered if what you have is the kinda thing I've seen online.
  24. That's a good point and I agree. So now we have our more specialised people where does that put us? That we'll have advances in specific fields only? Or maybe it underlies the importance of working in a group so everyone can combine their specialism, and together all the specialists would be darn clever. Maybe this is why a Grand Unified Theory is becoming harder. As well as all the obvious technicalities regarding QM, relativity and string theory there's also the fact that no one is a specialist in all 3 (or even any 2). How can you combine QM with relativity if you can only be a specialist in one? This is just an example, and not an amazing one at that, but you get the point, I hope!
