  1. Energy in this sense is hype from diet plans. Ridiculous. A skateboarding 15 year old boy -needs- 4800 calories a day. Unless you have the $48 a day for each child then he eats calories from any source. He pretty much has to eat some "empty" calories because he -needs- calories. So adding calories keeps him active and growing. If he only has the $7 a day allocated by his parent's foodstamps he will be hungry and nutritionally compromised. Lethargy ensues here yes because he is hungry. If his city has $1 apples with only 100 calories he compromises his calorie needs. There is no data I've found that starving or dieting increases energy- just the opposite. Promotes lassitude.
  2. ah,my management graduate work (with science undergrad) comes into play http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hawthorne_effect Classic view that says if you add better lighting workers (students) perform better. Vut any change will do that if they are being studied. Methinks someone is trying to sell online canned classes. Not to say interactive may have benefit. I recall an older alumni mentioning something about that. Students went to the front of the room and solved problems using this device- a blackboard.
  3. that was weird that comments got added to mooeys What is the single biggest factor as a cause for an early death? (besides gender)
  4. Although no studies on this phenomenon: One person can stand out with mosquitos and another is right next to her. He is bit and she is not. Reason? He has carbon dioxide being liberated. Ok, this is one personal antidote. Bloodwork may say show low carbon dioxide. If totally immobile he is able to consume 3000 calories versus 1800 calories for her. That is what is meant by metabolism So one way to look at it is that biology is destiny. She has him beat during famine but today, he remains svelte (though mosquito bitten.) He doesn't need as much willpower and can actually eat three meals a day where she is relegated to three snacks a day. They started adding antibiotics to cattle feed when they noticed large fish downriver from a pharmaceutical plant in New York. The change in intestinal flora due to antibiotics may be a root cause. Or some other effect like all the estrogens in chicken today. Mothers get their kids removed today if they let them roam the street versus 40 years ago when kids never stopped playing and yelling outdoors. Also, pediatricians browbeat new mothers if their kids are low on growth charts with always the ever present idea that a baby is not being fed enough. This scares Moms into on average preventing the low weight
  5. Thank you! The language of science is math. There are two groups- scientists, technologists, mathematicians and everybody else. The everybody else keeps wanting us to use words. But they refuse to learn the baby steps of math. Why can't we have hardy discussions throwing numbers around. Or/and are we afraid some professor would be fine with logical fallacies, poor lucidity, inaccuracy with words but use some math and then powers that be come down on you if not exacting. Example: My friend wants to date and I think she should date smart men. I have always valued smart people that are in front of me. Yet, I just didn't do the math til looking at it now. If someone is so smart as to be in the 1 out of a thousand in IQ then there are 300,000 in the US. Half are male. 150,000 Then a third older than her 50,000. If half are single 25,000. Average per state is then 500. Wow. My opinion style estimate is half are drug or alcoholics so that leaves 250 actual dateable humans on average per state. Women should gravitate to silicon valley and men to Washington, DC to up their odds due to gender imbalance. So whether the word genius or not can be used she has a preference for high IQ just like someone may want a redhead (although that is like 2% of the population). It doesn't have to make brunettes feel leftout. My point- by using one objective criteria (however imperfect it is) we just figured some rather discouraging odds for her but realistic. As a twist on other dating advice- if you met in a bar, you may actually be as pretty as you are but he could have gotten dumber.
