Every species changes it's environment in some manner. Many species are boom and bust species, they increase in number exponentially while the conditions are appropriate often to the point where they destroy their own food source and then collapse to a minimum population again.

Primates (and many other species) live in close family groups where co-operation and teamwork are essential. Under those conditions emotions are an evolutionary advantage and animals which don't exhibit the right temperament are pushed down the pecking order. The best way to make friends is to be sociable. These friends are then allies when needed.

By this logic little white mice should rule the world.

As we get older our hypothalamus atrophies. Apparently there is now some evidence that aging may be a result of this. ie. The hypothalamus is no longer boosting the immune system and cell repair and growth diminishes.
