  1. This is pathetic! Police hurt at clothing sale. : http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/uk/8601387.stm In any other country the police would just get the baseball bats out and the croud would run in fear. Over here the divs in the crowd arn't scared at all - they are just taking the piss and laughing because they know that the police can't doing anything without getting done for brutality. Too much political correctness - no need for arrests here - just hurt the offenders with a few whacks arounds the legs with the battons - they wouldn't take the piss out of the cops again and everyone else would run out of fear of it happening to them. Stuff like this happens because ther is no/little discipline anymore. It starts during childhood.
  2. Only if they are so thick that they don't understand that they are being punished for something they have done wrong. Most get the idea. We did, because we arn't stupid. EDIT: Sorry! I came into this thread without reading half of it - I missed page 2. Comment still stands though.
  3. When you squeeze the top bit it pushes out all the air, so when you release the bulb it creates a vacuum inside it which sucks up the liquid.
  4. You can look at the bond energies of the reactants and the products of the combustion reaction and work out how much energy will be released.
  5. Bob - do you mean like photographs or written records of your works for example?
  6. I've played Guitar for years and have performed. Performances ranging from rock bands to solo Jazz/clasical pieces at wedding receptions. I've played bass in small bands and also the drums. Learnt a bit of keybard/piano for fun. Not doing so much now - I'd want at least a months notice to brush up before performing anything on the guitar.
  7. I read this in the times the other day: http://www.timesonline.co.uk/tol/news/science/article7034945.ece Quite exciting. UK are building a fusion plant to finalise and tweak the technology. The plant will be big enough that when the research has finnished and the procedure finalised the plant can be hooked up to the national grid and will run as a power station.
  8. Pretty sure you wont get Cl like this. The Salt can't be in solution and needs to be molten to do electrolysis with it. However - this isn't possible with your home set up as it would be too dangerous. Are there any other ways of Chlorine that you know of?
  9. In my experience the bottles always end up back in their origional shape - the volume of which would be filled by the dissolved gasses coming out of solution. Whether or not this is better than just keeping the lid on tightly in the first place I don't really know - It would seem like a good bet to assume that this would actually be worse as the volume is being filled by the dissolved gasses that you are actually trying to keep in solution.
  10. Send us a current picture and I'll let you know if it's possible.

highly impossible! Is that even more impossible than just plan old impossible then? Personally I'd say it's Fairly impossible, but you know I could be wrong, it could be reasonable impossible or even just a little bit impossible.
  12. I agree - by squeezing the air out of the bottle that air is then replaced by gas that was dissolved - it will therefore make the drink loose more gas rather than keep it. Loads of people believe this will work, but logically it doesn't make sense all. By keeping the air in the bottle and putting the lid on tight surely less gas can escape because there is less room for it to escape. (I can see this where people get confused - they sqeeze out the air and think there is no room for the gas to escape because the liquid fill the bottle - - but off course the bottle isn't full (just squashed) and WILL fill from somewhere, which will be from the gas that comes out of the solution, making the drink flatter). This business about shaking the bottle to build the pressure must also be rubbish - by shaking it and building the pressure you are removing the dissolved gas again by fizzing it up - much better to use the air that is already in the bottle surely. We had this discussion in the labs a few years ago - I was amazed that the majority seemeed to think that this would work. If you think about it logically - it doesn't. If I have missed something then please point it out to me because it seems so obvious to me.
  13. of course. You wont really need physics qualifications to do a chemistry or biology BSc. If you do a BSc in Physics though then it would be useful to have done it earlier, otherwise your BSc will be very hard due to your lack of background knowledge.
  14. Not upset as such - I've known about this for many years - A bit pissed off that no-one else believed me when I flagged up concerns 10 years ago or so and was branded a racist. I abhor racist views and probably got a bit bitter about being branded with the same rod when talking to lefties. I have family in the police force. I know they have had institutionalised racism over the years, but you have to listen to majority of them that are saying thet nearly all of their time (in London) is being spent dealing with petty (and major) crimes from large numbers of immigrants that have walked in unchecked with no restrictions (due to the government just allowing them to come without question, passport, CR checks or anything). If they even mention it then there jobs (or chances for promotion) are at risk because they get branded with the same bunch of idiots that just seem to hate anyone who isn't the same colour as them. I don't understand how they believe that it is good for the country to just open the boarders without checking who they are letting in. My wife went to the USA for a family wedding the other year and took a hat in a box. Took her ages to get through the airport because she was a chemist with a box. I came back to the UK from a coach trip to Amsterdam and they just waved the coach through without even checking who the 30 people on board were or what we were carrying (ahem! probably a good job due to what I bought back with me!). Anyway - my rant is over - thanks for listening! Peace and love to all.
  15. Most unfortunate! However, I don't think the BNP have any chance of being heard as they ARE a racist party. Problem is, the governments stance on immigration has put everyone who speaks out against it into the same boat as the BNP. I think the Conservatives will get back in this time arround. I think they could be guilty of Treason even!
  16. I posted about this a few months ago and it was rubbished because the article was printed in the Daily Mail - since then it has appeared in pretty much every newspaper. http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/uknews/immigration/7198329/Labours-secret-plan-to-lure-migrants.html The Labour Govenment have been lying to the public regarding their immigration policy. They worked out that foregners that come to the UK vote labour - so they have had a completely open door policy to anyone wishing to come here, without regard for where they came from, who they were or what they had done in the past or where their allegences lie. Any attempt to discuss this has been shouted down as racist talk over the years to hide their agenda. I don't mind Britain becoming a multicultural society, but to have a policy where it is actively accellarated for the sake of the goverments own bennifit is wrong and risky. I can't see more than 20% of the UK voters voting Labour again this year - they're OUT!
  17. It's the people that are dumb in general. I went to the shops today to buy some bread, as I gave the last 4 slices of my loaf to the birds in the garden as it had been snowing. We had a couple of inches over night. When I got there, they had sold out of bread because people had been panic buying! Panic buying, because of 2 inches of snow. We had worse snow a few weeks back and we all survived. The shop has had 2 bread deliveries already this morning and have sold out completely. It's not like bread keeps that long anyway. So, because of some cunch of stupid bunts, I can't have a sandwich for lunch and the birds in the garden will starve tomorrow. The last thing we need is for the computers to start buying up all our bread as well.
  18. Jihadist Comedy by Chris Morris - The guy that bought us "The Day Today", "Brass Eye", "Time Trumpet" etc... http://www.guardian.co.uk/film/video/2010/jan/21/chris-morris-four-lions-sundance Oh, and I want one of these! Science fights the Mozzie scum! http://www.gearfuse.com/diy-mosquito-killing-device-a-k-a-the-handheld-flame-thrower/
  19. Slightly related (the dangers of coffee) - I "heard" that you should let a kettle come off of the boil for a minute before pouring, rather than pour scoulding hot water onto your instant coffe. Apparently it causes some chemicals to be released (which arn't if you pour just off the boil) which are assosiated with alzheimers. Hold on!! Now I'm really confused as well - I've just typed coffee and alzheimers into google and it suggests that coffee drinking can help keep off alzheimers! I'll have to search deeper later when I've got a bit more time to spare - I'm sure I heard that if the water is too hot it can cause the coffee to scold and give off traces of benzine or something like that - giving rise to alzheimers in long term coffe scolders. Anyone heard anything like this at all??
  20. As a kid in the Eighties I hoped we would have had fusion sorted out by now. It promises to be the answer to all our energy problems if we get it mastered. I realised ages ago we wouldn't sort it out - not sure if we ever will before we destroy the world, but here's hoping...... boo hoo.
  21. We've got some REALLY annoying advert campaings on the TV over here at the moment. They are so annoyingly catchy, but just one or 2 lines of lyrics so they go round and round in your head and drive you crazy. Bad luck if you catch one before bedtime, as you can even wake up singing them even and realise you've had them in your brain all night!! I would be tempted to boycott the products even because of it. Substituting with something else only seems to work sometimes - I usually one of the Star Trek theme tunes - or recently another advert which has a full song - only because that one gets stuck in your head too, but is bearable in comparison. PS - I thought MJ in Billie Jean was the greatest Moonwalker ever. Him and Turbo from the Breakdance movies - he could levitate brooms and dance on the cieling too!! Here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BVrWDPi12zE - Turbo broom dance levitation and some cool moonwalks http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RcGVEmVhk8M - Turbo dancing on the ceiling majeek and kissing some cute chick - Micheal Jackson Sining Billie Jean with cool moonwalks and much crotch rubbinghttp://www.youtube.com/watch?v=s7MmEMrCRfc - lol - even more MJ moonwalks and EXCESSIVE amounts of crotch rubbing!! Happy New Year!!!!!
  22. A couple of months back my wife and I had a mild but persistant colds where we were sneezing a bit and suffering mild conjestion for a few weeks. Our cat kept sneezing and wheezing too and we wondered if she had something similar. Probably just a coincidence, it was around the time when the swine flu was about.
  23. I had this problem with papers written in German. I know a little (and I mean VERY little) so I pasted it into google translate. The translation was pretty rubbish - especially the scientific words, but it gave me a Jist. Then, with the bits I had no idea about, I phoned some guy in Germany who works for one of our suppliers and asked him the meaning of some of the words and sentences I did not understand. He was a great help.
  24. If you just hang a thread into the solution you might get growth seeded by the thread anyway. Just leave it hanging in there for a few days if nescessary. When all the solution has evapourated, then transfer the thread (which should have crystals on it by now) into a fresh saturated solution and they will continue to grow. You can pick off the seeds from the thread and concentrate on growing the larger ones.
  25. I'm afraid that I can't talk about it - this might be a family show.
