  1. I was a supply teacher for about a year in secondary schools. I had mixed experiences to the extreame. It can be VERY rewarding at times and sometimes I'd come home on a high. On the flip side it could be rather stressful and depressing as well. (one school I was at was in the bottem 5 in the country for behavour problems - some lessons that went well were very enjoyable - some lessons were purely crowd controll) My personal experience was a very emotional roller coaster. I left to take a job in industry - when I'm feeling down or pissed off at my job, I just think " hmmm I could be standing in front of 30 teenagers who don't want to listen to me instead"... and that always cheers me up. One thing I found was that after work I had to talk to someone about my day to get alot of things off my chest, you know, to get some adult vindication for some of my descisions etc.. Other teachers are good for this - or just going down the pub. Whatever you decide - good luck and best wishes.
  2. That can be very useful for making a sub zero 'ice' bath - Dry ice I don't like that experiment either - needlessly dangerous.
  3. It's not so much an experiment as a childish prank, but I've always enjoyed dropping a couple of bits into a conical flask of water and leaving it somewhere in the lab. You can get some great looks on people faces when they walk by and don't know what the hell is bubbling away and emmiting smoke all over their desk!
  4. Ha Ha Ha - we've just taken out our halogens and put up normal bulbs in our living room. They wern't giving enough light out (there were only 2 bulbs in the whole room). Strictly speaking we could have had more put in to project more light around - but 2 normal bulbs seem fine and suit our room better. Weve got a mixture of halogens, the low enery bulbs and normal bulbs around our place.
  5. nooooo..... don't get sucked back in!!!!
  6. As I said - Temperature is increasing due to the BF nuclear reation going on and volume isn't - so by PV=nRT......... pressure increases.
  7. Well the volume can't increase if you've encapsulated it, but as the temperature rises due to the BF nuclear reaction going on then it follows that the Pressure will rise too. (PV=nRT) Over millions and millions of years - maybe so - but generally negligable - the sun is very big! Now that's just rubbish traveller..... come on mate. The sun is a star. Everyone knows that. I think we may be about to go round in another circle here.
  8. Not if reactions have taken place - not nescessarily. Drop a minto into a coke bottle. The number of molecules atoms etc are the same at T=0 as they are 30 seconds later - but, there is a massive increase in pressure - and thats just a physical reaction, let alone a chemical or a nuclear one.
  9. It was an analogy - in the case of the sun - it has already been 'shaken up'.
  10. What about the MASSIVE nuclear reations going on which are spewing out matter and energy at a massive rate - you're going to bottle that up and not have a pressure build? What about shaking up some coke and then screwing the top on quickly - the pressure will build for sure. The atoms arn't increasing in volume - your getting phase changes - in the case of the coke - the dissolved gasses come out of solution and gass pressure builds. In the case of the sun - well - all those atoms are emmiting shed loads of radiation particals and energy which would build pressure, no?
  11. Well it would depend on HOW mad the person was and what kind of madness he had really wouldn't you think? If he was so mad that he was foaming at the mouth and chewing on his own foot and responded to no external stimuli - then I reckon he would probably just ignore your blind man. If he was just slightly depressed or suffered from bipolar disorder or something mild - then he might actually be pleased to be of assistance to the blind man - giving his life meaning and a few minutes of feeling good about his good deed. If he was a complete psycopathological killer - he might say to the blind man 'I'll take you to the book shop myself good sir - follow me' and proceed to take him back to his house and murder him horribly. You see? I think it would depend upon the individual and his level of 'madness'..
  12. Each one of our brains is unique in it's own way. All of our individual experiences we encounter throughout our lives add to and develop our individual character and personality. No doubt he was a brilliant man, but he was just that at the end of the day - A man like any other.
  13. Has anyone read "The Forever War" ? There are three legged aliens caulled Taurons in that book. Good read actually - About time dilation over long hauls space flights. It follows one bloke who joind the 'space army' or whatever they call it and he is there at first contact. Due to time dilatory effects as they travel from point to point across the galaxy - he ends up spanning hundereds of years of earth life and war with the Taurons and ends up being there at the end of it all. Every one looks to him for advise and assumes he's an expert because he has been part of the war effort for hundreds of years - but to him he has only seen a few battles and has aged very little and ends up way behind on all of the technology. Good book. PS - it was written by Joe Haldeman in 1975 if anyone is interested.
  14. Yea, I reckon so (as a guess) - why?

    Exam lunacy

Being fair though..lol.. there was this other lecturer who was having trouble explaining something and we were all struggling to understand and kept asking him questions he couldn't really explain the answers to properly -- anyway - he just came straight out with it and said 'look, don't worry about - it's not on your exam anyway so just forget it... make sure you alll turn up next week though () it WILL be very important!' Fantastic.

    Exam lunacy

We once had a set of questions on a Physical Chemistry exam set by one lecturer (this was only 2 Q's - not the whole exam though) where out of the 10 week course he went through 10 topics. I really liked the course and revised REALLY hard for his questions and done loads and loads of past papers and was extreamly confident about the whole exam - espessially his section. Last lecture he says 'don't worry too much about today - were just introducing bucky balls and their chemistry at the end here to make you aware of their chemistry, but it's not really that imoportant it's something new were introducing to the course' It was interesting, but not like the rest of the course - which was one of my favourites. Basically - I descided to make sure I knew the first 9 topics expertly and didn't waste my time really revising much about bucky balls because he said they wern't important - and I had other stuff to LEARN let alone revise. Got to the exam, and you've guessed it, BOTH pissing questions he wrote were about bucky balls - and really in depth too. Bastard! Good job the rest of the exam went OK - I was gutted - I would have played a joker on his course I thought I knew it so well.
  19. Kenyans and Ethiopians have dominated world distance running for ages. Is this cultural or racal?
  20. You just put in the e's in the outer shell and pair them up. The I don't know how to draw them on here so I looked a couple up on line - this site looked like it explained it well with some good diagrams: http://www.coolschool.ca/lor/CH11/unit5/U05L12.htm Or type 'electron dot diagrams' into google - there is alot more reading there.

OK - Last week was part of a 'Tubular Molecular Vacuum pump' and the week before was an 'ice crusher' apparently. They've changed the rules a bit. They post it on Thursday and want answers by Friday - First correct answer out of a hat sometime on Friday will win. Here is this weeks! I think it looks like an attachment for a dispersion mixer. But it could be just about anything!!! Any ideas??
  23. I doubt it's just you. being fair - the OP kinda states that. Anyway - wern't we told all of this in the 1980's??
  24. But after that post - the others explained it to him - now he gets it and he thanked them for clarifying no? Anyway, Newton I think: " For every action there is an equal and opposite action" Therfore F=mg down is met with Force UP which is EQUAL and OPPOSITE - thus the NET forces and accelarations are zero. They are still there in both directions (Which I'm sure has been said already - sorry to jump mid conversation)
  25. LoL!! Your dead right! I was trying a bit of reverse psycology to encourage her/him to reattempt the tough part again. Dak - I'm pretty sure the long term cravings are psycological - I'll have to look it up - it's definately what we were taught at school seems to be a popular belief.
