... it doesn't break any thermodynamic laws though if, as I suggested, any energy used to make the flip (which comes from vibrational energy of the molecular bonds) is replaced by absorbing energy from the surroundings... i.e. KE from the air molecules bumping into it and increasing the vibrational energy of the system.

I agree - but the question is how much more efficient is it? Is it really necessary to demand hot water when washing in cold water WILL work?... as you suggested it will have more to do with the amount of soap used and the thoroughness/lenth of time scrubbing than the temperature.... probably.
-
Yea - I think what I said makes sense - but I have done no measured experiments - it is assumption. I think the reasons I stated feasibly explain why.... but as I said - it is speculation. And cold water does work - even if not as well, but by what amount the warmth improves the process I am not sure.
-
Yes - but why? Reduced viscosity of the oils? Faster acting and reduced viscosity of the surfactants? Both reasons? More? My guess then is - reduced viscosity of the oils making it easier for the surfactant molecules to move to their positions... takes less energy for them to physically do so. The action of the surfactant is a physical process, which is sped up or made more efficient due to the thermal energy in the system. Lathers better basically... but this is speculation.... and I suspect the hot vs cold water only provides a subtle difference - you can easily wash your hands in cool soapy water - it still works.
-
Maybe the surfactants work better and quicker in hot water vs cold water?.... They act physically on the molecular level forming micelles around the dirt, which I can see forming faster and easier in warm water over cold, but Really, I am not sure if it would make much of a difference. They will still work in cold water and washing in cold water will be better than not washing your hands at all.

This IFLS article points to a team that have found that the random walk in the molecules of graphene cause a single sheet of it on a micro scale to flex/snap back and forth from concave to convex from time to time. Put between conducting plates this oscillation causes a trickle charge of power that could be used to power small devices and do away with the need for a replaceable battery. A 10 micron square of graphene sheet produces about 10 micro watts of power continuously apparently. Presumably these could be stacked to produce more. http://www.iflscience.com/technology/graphene-loophole-could-provide-clean-and-limitless-energy-in-the-future/ I thought it looked pretty cool. I was going to post this in the thread from a couple of years back about graphene sheets on solar panels that can produce electricity in the rain, but it seemed suitably different enough to warrant its own thread. Here is a recap of that one from 2016 if you missed it. http://www.scienceforums.net/topic/99997-newly-discovered-solar-panels-will-generate-energy-from-raindrops/?tab=comments#comment-951523 In terms of questions that arise from this ... I am assuming,, or asking the question of, how the energy used in the oscillations from convex to concave is replenished to the graphene sheet. Thermal conduction of heat energy? Would the sheet cool eventually as it uses energy from the random walk and have this heat replaced with colliding molecules from the surrounding air?

OK - I see where you are coming from but it is a matter of perspective. Putting oil oligarchs and climate change deniers in charge of it would amount to an attempt to destroy it by some. Well yes - I would agree with that too.... but the current day party cannot claim credit for what politicians of the same party did 60 years ago.
-
Neither is 241 years.... It is pretty irrelevant who created it though from what I can see - what is your point? It is the current admin that is destroying it by putting unsuitable people in to run it, what is the relevance of who created it?
-
Because the Tories have been trying for years to force people who claim not to be able to work into work. They don't want to subsidise the lives of these people that are not paying money into society. 'there but by the grace of god go I"... I would have thought human decency would have you take care of the inflicted - it could happen to any of us at any time. It is just right wing politics though... The extreme right wing people I used to know were advocates of cleansing the gene pool of disabilities by not allowing people with disabilities to breed..... it is totally despicable.... that and throwing shit at paki* shops. * - this word is considered very offensive in the UK by left wing people. The right wingers just use it as an abbreviation of the word Pakistani. They totally mean offence with the word and then deny it when challenged. I don't actually know if it is considered offensive by people of Pakistani decent or not. For me it is just like the abbreviation of the word British to Brit - but I stopped using the word as it offended too many people. I think part of the problem is that people in the middle that use it as an abbreviation get called racists and they think it is ridiculous so the left wing message gets lost in political correctness and ignored.... it is how/why things like brexit happen imo.

So a Republican created the EPA.... I fail to see the relevance of who created it 60 years ago when it is being treated with such disrespect now. I've missed a point somewhere.
-
Does that include the time it is used as a page number on page 666? ;-)

It travels through the slits the same way a water wave would travel through a double slit... emerging from the other side from both points which interfere. (I think! - it has been a while - others will say if I am wrong for sure). Here is a you-tube demonstration for water.

Sorry - it isn't just the mentally disabled - they are looking to get all disabled people back or into work. They talk about it as if it is a great plan that will benefit all the disabled people buy getting them into employment.... but what it probably actually means is that they plan to take away the disability benefit and force the disabled into jobs they do not want to undertake.

You regularly amaze me with the ignorance you show of how the world works. Do you not think the mother would feed the child if she could? Maybe she doesn't bother because she is black and lazy eh? You are either wilfully ignorant of the plight of the poor or just plain incapable of understanding their problems. He or someone asked you to say what policies the pres has implemented that impressed you so much as you were saying how great he was. What policies has he bought in that make him so great in your eyes? We don't want to know what he has tweeted or said in a speech.... what has he actually done legislatively? I think that was the question - apologies if I am wrong.

A Tory MP on the Radio 4 news this morning was fielding questions regarding the size of the UK workforce to fill jobs such as primary school teachers, nursing and care assistant places after Brexit. It is thought that we will loose thousands of 'unskilled' workers from our workforce. He wasn't worried at all when this was pointed out to him as he has a plan.... his plan? - His plan, the Tory plan, and I use plan in a very vague sense here, is to get the mentally ill off of benefits and back to work to cover the problem of loosing 10's of thousands of potential employees. Although individuals suitability to work will be tested (again presumably as they have already gone through the hell of ATLAS tests), if found fit to work they will be forced to take jobs as carers or primary school teachers to cover the shortfall. "They will be delighted to be able to work again" he declared!... yea, sure. So - the plan, after losing thousands of employees due to Brexit, is to bully the mentally unstable/disabled into forced labour to teach our primary school children and to take care of the old.... wtf!? So - Is this a good idea?
-
So what did you mean when you said ...and this, in answer to a sensible and real question Hey - sorry - maybe I misread the tone of your writing - sorry if so. It sounded derogatory and condescending... and seemed to ignore all the good points made in an attempt to engage you in conversation about the topic you started.
-
Have you any idea of how to hold a discussion? Engage Strange in conversation instead of hurling insults. Quote the bits of his writing that you disagree with and challenge those points with facts and evidence backing up those facts. He has made some good points about solipsism and things. Phi mentioned that science was about building models rather than finding concrete proof (as 'proof' of anything is only within our own understanding and limits anyway... see the solipsism stuff). What exactly is it that you have the problem with? 'being able to fly over an ocean' and proving the existence of spiritual beings are VERY different things.
-
You are totally missing the points presented to you.
-
I believe it does. My Uncle was in a submarine for the whole of WW2 - he had some amazing stories. Being honest it sounded pretty hellish.

I am a member of another forum that is not science related at all. It uses the same engine for sure as the forum set ups, even down to the colours, are identical. The only difference I could tell was that their rep is registered publicly... so when you give someone a point it appears bottom right where the rep is but says 3 likes and lists the people that liked it in brackets... a bit like facebook. Being honest, I prefer the anonymity of the way you do it here.

What has this got to do with min wage? Automation has been increasing decades and decades. That I do not know anything about... and being honest, doesn't really get my attention. It just sounds seedy. I don't care how many of your presidents get a quickie from their secretaries as long as it is consensual and wasn't implemented through harassment. I agree here.... but if your wife goes to the extent of falsely accusing you of rape then I think the relationship is probably over by that stage anyway. Any domestic abuse is hard to prove... I was arrested once whilst going through my divorce for breaking a light socket in my living room (and a cat toy also). I also slammed the door on my way out and it caused a crack in the glass. I am not proud of these actions... my wife wasn't even on the same floor of the building, but it was enough to be charged with wilful criminal damage apparently. I personally thought this was ridiculous, but then maybe I am biased. It was one of the hardest nights of my life.... but it doesn't excuse the abuse I showed to the light socket. My wife was terrified apparently - although I know she was totally safe, I suppose she did not know that. I think I have repented enough for that discretion now. I was totally gob smacked by the serious the police took the incident... it was as if I had beaten her or something, I thought my actions human in the circumstances (which I won't go into). I would never have hurt her physically at all and felt disgusted by the suggestion. Right - I'm off - Have a good week end/thanksgiving.

Nah - I re-read it and his post made me smile about working in IT, so I gave him another. I will use them more sparingly in the future though... I can be a bit trigger happy with dishing out the positive rep.. and as I said, there are probably people that deserve it more. Sock puppets spamming their main accounts with positive rep?
-
Really? What about the murderers, terrorists, rapist, the KKK and the likes? No, but they can change the law and make sure that offenders are punished accordingly. Really? I did not know... although not surprised due to the strong Christian domination over your politics... as I said, it has only been 20 years since we out lawed it here and that was probably due to the European Court of Human rights (which we are about to abandon . ) - I assumed it was just illegal in the states.
-
Rectified.... 24hours must be up. I will use these sparingly from now on.
