Why is ScienceForums going so slowly these Days?
DrP replied to studiot's topic in Suggestions, Comments and Support
Same here - I thought it was to do with my new network cable... but I don't thinks so now. Other things are OK. -
Insanity missed by the doctors? Hatred of people and he flipped? He joined a terrorist organisation? .. all possible, but I think unlikely. I am not sure I'd trust whatever reason they gave when/if they released it now anyway. How would we know they are telling the truth? So... not zero then and considerably more than the UK even after the population size is taken into account. Thanks John. That puts that line of propaganda to bed... Maybe time for the OP to rethink his world view... he has been lied to many times by somebody.
-
Too true Juno.
-
I didn't want to say it though... :-( I don't want any fool getting ideas.
-
You are the boss, so I'll comply. I don't think this one is thought out that well though. What off topic convo are you talking about? Gun laws? Breakdown of society? Aren't these natural progressions of the topic of the OP? It is impossible to discuss without drifting into the topic of gun laws. The OP brought up the state of society and world problem... which being fair seem like a natural progression of the topic. I won't take any more part in this thread then, because, what else is there left to discuss under the heading.?. an event happened. That's it.. any further discussion will drift off of the exact topic by way of natural conversation.

If you do not talk to these people.... they go off and vote for people like Trump that tell them what they want to hear regardless if it is factual or not... we have a UK exit from the EU.... because, imo, people just fob off any anti EU or talk about immigration as extremist right wing views that won't be listened to. Problem is it is half the country that vote this way - so if you don't indulge/educate them then they are just going to continue spreading their misinformation and twisted facts to demonise anyone or anything that doesn't support their views... they then go off into their own little ehco chambers and internet bubbles and these grow and you get people DT running a superpower and Brexit happening. Maybe he is too stubborn to look up the facts and figures and interpret them honestly... maybe he'll come round. But if you attack him personally he will certainly double down and 'stick to his guns' and continue to spread his misinformed views.... others will believe him and you'll have 8 years of DT not 4. Too late for us here in the UK - we are leaving the EU and nothing, it seems, will be changing that. The OP bought it up as a comparison between the UK and the US... it was to support his view that the UK (and the rest of the world presumably) is on the verge of a total collapse in civilisation. It was a continuation of the gun law discussion which was a natural continuation of the OP - the recent shooting. I have no wishes to discuss it - but I won't sit back and let blatant invention of UK crime figures being spouted as evidence for societies collapse - it is totally ridiculous.... but seemingly part of the conversation/discussion with the guy who thinks that 100s of thousands of gun deaths are acceptable losses for... err for what exactly? I am not sure what the trade off is... so people can feel safer by arming themselves? This is why we are discussing it - to educate people that they are NOT actually safer with guns, but safer without them.... unless you are a gangster, a robber, a rapist or a drug dealer - then sure - buy some guns, you'll probably need them. The recent event was tragic.. maybe though in an ironic way it will save 100s of thousands of lives by getting DT to allow discussions regarding gun safety. In a round about way the guy who just shot 60 people could be responsible for saving 100s of thousands of future lives if you end up getting proper gun control laws in place because of it. I didn't want to say that... but it is a possibility that his motives were this.. he was old, maybe dying anyway and wanted to save future lives.

He claims it has never happened at all in the last 7 years in the US. pfft! Back on topic - I had a thought about the guy's reason for doing it... It is probably wrong, but just an idea.... I decided not to share it in full though in case it upset some people. He was clearly mad or bad though.... and after all the confusion on the news about his motives and invented motives I will hold back and say we do not know his reason... whatever the US media decide to invent. Being honest - I'd probably get a clearer understanding of the storey if I watched the news on the Russia Today channel. Less lies and inventions - more balanced reporting of the facts rather than agenda related twists to the facts to score points for one party or the other Oh for emotionless, unbiased reporting of facts on our news programmes.

I suppose if you vote in something akin to a right wing dictator then you are going to get lies and propaganda in your media. Sad really, but it is literally what these people voted for.... the rest of the world could see this BS coming a mile away. On a plus note... (and back on topic) - he DID say that he might look at the gun laws, or at least have a discussion about them soon. Zero rapes in the USA over the last 7 years!? You are totally deluded - I do not need to look that up to know you are talking shit here. Look it up - I'll wager with you that the figure is higher than the UK. I'll wager what ever you want that the figure is not zero in the last week let alone 7 years.. Are you talking about one of our chemistry experts? lol. He is a grumpy old fu(&er I'll agree... but he does source his facts before posting and he is very knowledgeable about chemistry. He doesn't go out of his way to make any friends that's for sure, but I do respect his honesty and outspokenness. I don't always share his opinions - but I appreciate his honesty, knowledge and intelligence.
-
6000+.... over how many decades is that figure? How many comparative crimes in the USA over the same period?

As far as I know you can do what String J suggested or just visit their page... there posts are listed there. -
Where do you get this clap trap from? There have been some sex rings... there are evil people everywhere - are you saying there are no gang rapes in the USA? What are the comparative figures between the two countries? Would a gang rape even be reported on the news in your violent country? There have been many sex rings closed down. It is a good thing that we are catching them and closing them.. It will be harder and harder for these people to get away with their shit. You can't tell me there is no rape in the USA... I am at work so I won't look the figures up. This obsession with civilisation ending in the world out side of the USA... Where did that come from? lol.

Then there will be nothing to find, obvs. -
Good point - but we believe that because it is on the news all of the time... (is it fake news?). Every day there is a gun shooting somewhere - thousands per year! Unless I have my 'facts' wrong I was lead to believe that it was a real issue causing many many lives to be lost on a weekly basis. Are you saying the loss of thousands of American lives is not a problem? ;-)
-
Sounds feasible - what you propose is similar to what they have already suggested.. Secure the sheet across the hole and put a small weight/pebble in the middle to create the slope... The water will collect in the sheet. I guess you could puncture a small hole in the centre too and have a container underneath to collect the drops. This way you will get any condensation collecting under the plastic as well maybe. Good luck.

yea - I've seen this before with people I have spoken to from the USA... when there was a riot in London a few years back an American girl asked me on a forum if I was alright and safe..... she said that the government was falling and this was it, the revolution!... I informed her that a some chavs had stolen a few pairs of Nike trainers from the shop and that was a bout it... it fizzled out. She wouldn't have and told me that this was it... the end of society in the UK. lol. Again - I guess it keeps people docile, like religion, to feed them lies about the state of other similar countries so they do not feel so hard done by putting up with the government they have - who knows how people get such twisted views of far off places they have never been to.
-
lol - It does sound crazy when you put it like that. Maybe someone has given him some fake news and he believed it.
-
of course I did... it was in response to your comment here: (underlined relevant comment). I don't see you owning or not owning a gun as relevant - the fact that SO many people own them or can just pop down to the shops to get them is the reason that there are so many thousands of deaths due to gun crime in your country. You don't seem to realise that people just do not have guns in most other countries. If the criminals have guns then they tend to shoot each other rather than innocent people.
-
Maybe. Who knows why people make up fake news. There are no places that the police will not go to if they are called out in an emergency. They will take an armed response team if necessary. Where are these supposed no go areas? Where did you hear about them? Sounds like some shithole... not a civilised 1st world society. If there is trouble here we call the police and they turn up and sort it out. If the perp has a gun he is warned and then shot if non compliant. Arming everyone is asking for trouble... as your death rate due to guns testifies very well.

To a 6 year old:- If one car is going north at 60 mph and another is coming in the opposite direction at 30 mph..... Their speeds relative to each other are 90 mph.... if they crash then they have all the energy from their respective velocities. When you get very, very, very fast... approaching the speed of light, it no longer works that way because nothing can go faster than light... no one knows why..... but I wouldn't worry your 6 year old head about it for now.
-
I have never heard of these no go zones... I looked them up briefly, the first hit I got was below - seems like fake news, made up propaganda from the right as usual to spread fear and hatred.. although I'd need to check further =- I wouldn't be surprised if there were hot spots everywhere. http://metro.co.uk/2017/06/04/brits-tell-bigots-about-the-real-british-no-go-areas-6684831/ Says in that article that the bigots were ridiculed. ;-) There are places in every city in every country were you don't walk around by yourself after dark. I'd rather walk though London at night around the back streets than anywhere in the USA where the muggers can get guns. There aren't many places here I wouldn't go. We all know that Islam has an agenda... so what? We won't let it happen. What we don't want is to be controlled by fear as a kneejerk reaction to their BS. Religion is finished as a way of controlling the masses... We are seeing it's death throws all over the world. Proper education of the masses will see to it's final death ... maybe gradually over the next 100 years or so imo. Who knows - we will be long gone before the worlds problems are sorted out.
-
Whichever ones allow random people to go to a shop and buy guns and ammo without background checks on the person. I think you are deluded here - Sharia law will never take hold in the west - that is ridiculous fear mongering. People aren't so thick as that to allow it. People are waking up all over the world to the ignorance of all religions... they don't believe it any more as science explains clearly what was once attributed to god. No way will Islam ever take over. Sure - there are still a few wars to fight and some barbaric acts of terrorism to come from all sides I am sure... but we will win through for common sense and common goodness for sure. ...also - even if there was a rise in Islamic terrorists in the UK... I am pretty relieved that they can't buy guns from shops. It's a no brainer.
-
Whatever his reasons were for doing it - it is another advert to sort your outdated gun laws out. Whatever his reason, Islamic terrorist, white supremacist, mentally handicapped, disgruntled asshole.... if it happened anywhere else we would be saying 'how did he get all those weapons? - this is terrible' - as I is it is just another day in the life for the USA and their outdated gun laws. (I was going to say retarded gun laws but the mods frown on the use of the word - but I feel that it is apt here by definition of the word - the laws are so far out of date and behind the rest of the civilised world that I can think of no better word than retarded - meaning backward, held back, out of date and behind with the times.)

... but not any emotional response is love. (I suppose it depends how you define it). There are a range of emotions - not all of them love. 'Love' covers a wide range of things by our definition, more accurately broken down by the Greeks (even the 3 Greek loves overlap - you would usually have a different mix of Erotic, Philia and Agape love for spouse for example as oppose to more purely Agape/Philia for a child; more Phillia with some Agape for a sibling; just Agape and Eros for a stranger etc).. they are different emotional responses, thus they were given different names. If you hate someone, this isn't love but is an emotional response - of course it is different. But not all concern is love and there are different levels of it - see above regarding any emotional response. Regarding the OP - imo the question can't be answered without proper defining of what they mean by love. Is it even relevant to talk about opposites of emotions? I am sure someone said something similar earlier in the thread and I kind of agree, but I do not know - which is why I haven't gotten involved in the thread up until now. I would still argue that the Greek loves are different to each other though.... they are a better or more precise definition for the one word we have for it which we use in different situations to mean different things.
-
Thanks. I will have to disagree about the emotions being the same though - that's the whole point - emotionally I would argue a difference between the love of your child to that of your mistress. This is why they have different words. Caring maybe? Concern for wellbeing..? I do not entirely know, but I would argue their difference... I do not think they are the same, even though we use only the one word to describe the different types of love.
-
Not really... Agape is an unconditional love for all beings, whereas eros is sexual love, so totally different. The family/brotherly love of philia is also very different to the other 2. It isn't just the recipient that is different - it is a different 'feeling' or emotion that is experienced - thus the different words, which have their own definitions.
