I like this sentiment. But why even give the idea of something written over 1500 years ago any credence when it has so many obvious falsehoods, lies and errors? I understand that it is not even possible to question it in some countries on pain of death. It is very sad. Peace out.

No one knows how. ;-) but we can measure what happens when masses come together. Masses attract according to a mathematical equation. The force of attraction depends upon the masses involved and the distance between them... the further apart they are the less they attract.

The Quran says a lot of things.. like Mohamed went to heaven on a winged horse and struck the moon in two with a shout... This is obviously rubbish, so why should we believe anything else it says. It is so far out of date it isn't funny that so many in the world let it rule there lives with it's barbaric shit like chopping off hands for theft and stuff. At least the bible supercedes the barbaric shit in the old testament by introducing more love and peace in the New... regardless - it's still demonstrably wrong so often it is time we all put it to the scrap heap, grow up and love one another as both books suggest (in places where they aren't telling you to kill or mutilate each other).

not wrong.. I might try something like: "The disturbance of the medium has caused disruption on the surface so that it is no longer smooth. There will be waves and vibration patterns across the surface causing the incident light rays to scatter at different angles to what they were when the surface was smooth. Now the reflections are being scattered by the peaks and troughs in the surface of the medium causing image distortion. The image will become more distorted and scattered the more Martin agitates the liquid." Maybe you can come up with something better still. It's just an idea/suggestion. Writing/grammar have never been my strongest points.

Maybe there should be a definition for 'Absolute Nothing', like there is for absolute zero with temperature. Maybe it needs a new word to define it. I like the term 'Absolute Nothing' though and don't think it needs a new word. However, I don't think we fully know what 'Absolute Nothing' is from our current understanding... will it include these virtual particle popping in and out of existence? Will it include co-ordinate space? I am not asking for answers, just saying that I think it is debatable as to what it actually is and that our current knowledge doesn't give us what we need to know to define Absolute Nothing yet.

Not all of it goes straight through - some can be reflected and some can be adsorbed. You will notice that, although you can see your reflection, you can also see the bottom of the bowl.

yes - the surface becomes wavy so now, instead of reflecting evenly, the image is distorted/scattered depending upon how much or how severe the agitation is. At low agitation the image might be a little blurred.. at high levels of agitation you might see very little of the original image. This is because the incident light rays are now reflecting off in lots of different directions depending upon how mixed and wavy the surface is. Some might pass straight through now rather than reflecting at all due to the angle at which they hit the surface of the liquid. Maybe there is more to it than that - the others can take it further if there is. That's about all I've got on that - I think it is just as simple as it sounds. Reflect of a smooth surface and you get a clear image... reflect of a slightly agitated surface and get some blurring... reflect of a highly agitated wavy surface and get a highly distorted and scattered image.

I used to like these when I was at school. I am not going to do it... but in ALL cases with these I would advise drawing the triangles out as described... you can then look for equivalent angles etc... or whatever tricks you know... but it is MUCH easier once drawn out.

They are leading you on the right track. What happens at the surface of the liquid when it is still and the light hits it? What does the reflection look like? What happens on the surface of the liquid when it is agitated? What is this going to do to the reflection? As Studiot suggested - the light can go straight through, it can reflect or it can be absorbed. Much of this depends on the incident angle of the incoming light. What happens to the incident angle of the light on the surface if the water is agitated?

I don't think so - What is the relationship between force and speed? If doubling the force doubled the speed then you would be right - but doubling the force doubles the acceleration of the particles... therefore they will continue to get faster at swifter rate and should settle much quicker if spun at 2g over 1 day than at 1g over 2 days.

Probably more like a far distant cousin.

Thanks - I do not know too much about it's mechanism. I was just intrigued as to how someone could think it might work BEFORE digestion... it doesn't make sense to me. I know that the placebo effect can play a big part in pain killing... that is the only mechanism I can think of that would cause it to have any effect before digestion occurs.

I doubt it will hurt his feelings - he is an atheist (I think). And a level headed and a funny one too if you get to know him a bit. ;-)
-
Anyway - I don't have all the answers... I am sure you don't either. ;-) Peace out.

I know - which is why I said that I agree with some of what you wrote. But try to drop the anger - ironically, the skills that let you drop your anger and give you the grace to forgive yourself and others can come out of certain religious beliefs. I learnt that from Christianity. There is much love to be observed.

There is the odd comment... but most just comes across as negativity and doesn't explain why people still believe in god. I understand how people get sucked into it. Most that do actually mean well. I was a believer for many years... I have had to forgive myself for the stupidity of believing, what now seems like, obvious nonsense.
-
See - I don't really disagree with this.. but it seems designed to insult or hurt the feelings of a believer. Also, you might be missing the positive aspects that religion bought to the world in the past.... like the Romans - it has had it's time imo.
-
Well it is a bit soap boxy... post after post of preaching your personal brand of atheism.. the thread is about why people still believe rather than why they should not.
-
I said it 'SEEMS' hate filled... as if there is a chip somewhere on your shoulder about it. Which could be understandable - loads do. I could be wrong. I am not religious - well, I don't believe in God anyway. I think the world needs to drop the god BS. ;-) I know you think it is a good tool for learning love, forgiveness, respect etc.. maybe it is - but is should no longer be presented as fact imo. It is plain dumb.
-
Being fair - I agree with some of it... it is just that it seems full of hate and bitterness.. which I do no like. And some of it is clearly wrong or obviously just opinion anyway. I am not sure why it needs spreading out over so many posts either when one can edit one's earlier post quite easily. I'm sure the mods won't like that... especially as it is pretty preachy (or anti preachy - soap boxy anyway).

How could it work before it has been digested? I would assume that the placebo element of it could work before it dissolves/digests, but for the drug to work as it is designed it needs to get into the blood stream.

You can edit a previous post - you don't have to have 6 consecutive ones you know? Are these your own musings or cut and pasted quotes? They look like quotes - You should probably acknowledge the original authors.

Good luck whatever you do.
