  1. I wanted to do that too... When I applied to JET back in the late 90's they said that they were taking 1st Class hons degrees only... and then there were many, many applicants for the one Ph.D. project they were running.. I didn't bother applying in the end as I knew I was not getting a first and there was an interesting Chemistry project that caught my eye at my Uni. I friend of mine, who was a mature student with straight As and a good 1st did apply a few years later though and got on a Ph.D. placement there through UMIST. I don't want to burst your bubble - but as with a child who wants to be a space man... what do you say? Work hard, go to college, excel.... and maybe you might someday work in a related field that supports and drives space exploration.. but it is unlikely they will ever go into space.
  2. Yes - it is peppered with con men selling snake oil and false dreams to the gullible and needy too.
  3. Maybe the Chinese thought it was a good idea to join the Korean war on the side of N.Korea? Could that be considered as preemptive? They hit into the allied forces and drove them all the way back to the border 'before' they had a chance to advance on China after we had finished with the North Koreans. (although I doubt that was ever going to happen). Otherwise there I am sure there must be some proper examples... I'll try to think and look some up later if I get the time - Interested to see if there are any examples though as it seems as though there should be. Looking forward to reading some replies to your question. (+1). PS - Just thought of a possible example - will have to look up the name of the battle/war when I get home. I think that in one of the Israeli wars they went in early and ruined Egyptian air ports so they could maintain air superiority to fight on the other front against Syria. There was a massive tank battle where also they just stormed in and wiped out a large amount of armour too - I do not know if they were purely preemptive though.
  4. This is what I was saying about the previous war (1950's?) -- The North invaded.... The USA/UK and the South pushed them right back all the way to china and the war was pretty much over.... who knows what would have been negotiated, a united Korea?, A negotiated peace? North run by the south or by China? A regime change? No-one knows. But, at the 11th hour, the Chinese joined the North Koreans and pushed the border all the way back to the North South divide.
  5. Thanks to you both... I'm honoured - you are two of my fav's. I'll follow you back.
  6. Pins and needles? Is it very different from how pins and needles feels?
  7. This is true... although the lady did ask for our opinions in the OP.
  8. Like 'Fidelity' and 'Fidel Castro' - I see.
  9. Tell him then. Did you text him back yet to tell him that you thought it inappropriate? What did he say?
  10. Ha! I actually like the new profile page. The posting history is on display and it tells you how many times you have 'won'... apparently I have 'won' 6 times. lol. I had no idea at all. lol. String has won 40 times, imatt - 133, Lord Antres - Thrice and studiot 15 times. Doesn't appear to be a friends list... maybe it was wiped as there is now a section for followers.... of which I have none, lol.
  11. It appears that you can get +/- rep for status updates too.. I guess that's good... people can let you know if they like your status or not.
  12. On topic - I would like to say that of course animals are conscious... it seems pretty obvious to me... but it is not something I have read any studies on and I am not convinced what could be determined from any studies anyway. I don't think we know enough about the subject to objectively quantify consciousness and determine who or what has it in nature. Anyone who has connected with an animal or a pet will know that they all have their own little personalities and idiosyncrasies. I would find it very hard to believe that were not conscious.
  13. You often talk as if your neighbourhood is full of these people. Out of all the people I have met, bought tea for and listened to and hugged and comforted that have been 'penniless and loveless in their own filth in the gutter', I can honestly say that I have NEVER met a single one that would suggest that they feel on top of the world, victorious and alive. Most people, however disgusting and below you you think they are, aren't all on the jolly laughing at you in your nice house with your nice family and good job for working so hard while they lounge around all day. They are torn, broken, disparaged and forgotten by society. I still find this attitude of hating the unfortunate totally despicable and without any human feeling or understanding on your part at all.
  14. Have you challenged the guy? Asked him what these photos are about? If you don't like them then maybe ask him to stop sending you crap. He should get the message straight away. If he doesn't then you have grounds for complaint.... This, though, is obviously just my opinion and you should make your own mind up. Personally I'd just ask him to stop sending you stuff as it makes you feel uncomfortable.. the whole situation should end there.
  15. what about those funky new winged suits. I guess that is sort of soaring or gliding rather than flying, but still impressive.
  16. The 'condensed view' tidies it up a bit too.
  17. You can now give positive and negative rep on the same post... handy if you change your mind about something I suppose.
  18. I do miss the "most recent posts" button a bit... "unread content" and "recent activity" are similar, but as you say - includes every post, rep point, joining etc.. I did like the simple list of threads with the most recent activity. I'm sure we'll get used to it, it's only a little different.
  19. Good point John, I guess I didn't think of that. I wasn't talking UHV though... just the reduced pressure of a vac oven. Would the battery suffer under reduced pressure as it is sealed? I once broke the UHV on an SEM machine... Took all night to vac it back down. I thought I 'd look at a dead wasp at the end of the day after most had gone home and I had finished my work... I coated it with a layer of gold first and put it in the machine, not thinking that as it was a bit fresh there would be some 'sealed areas' of it in tact still. These sealed areas popped under the vac and I had to remove the thing and totally vac it down again all night. I was worried at first in case I had broken the machine by covering the insides with wasp insides, but it wasn't that bad, just lost the vacuum until the next day.
  20. Are you following me about today Dim? You are right... even if the table could push back you still couldn't jump hard enough. That's why I suggested doing the maths of it.... if he can't visualise it then maybe calculating it would help him.
  21. Great minds and all that... But yea - that's the same thing really.
  22. Problem is... when he jumps off the table it will just push the table down. The table legs, not being on the ground, wont push back on him to give him the vertical jump you are proposing. So the table will just hit the ground faster. It might slow him fractionally, but not enough I reckon. You could do the actual maths of it pretty easily to show this.
  23. What about a hair drier.... or better still, 40C in a vacuum oven?
  24. It has been said already.... but reality behaves like a 3D game because 3D games are modelled on reality. I first thought we might be in a program when I was a child and learnt a little BASIC programming. When I read - "let there be light" I imagined it as a definition in a programming line (as LET was a command in BASIC to define things). Pure imagination though.
  25. You can trust something that has been tested. With religious faith there is no testing of it allowed (probably because it fails so predictably so often). I wouldn't say it is a synonym. They are similar but not exactly the same. To trust in something you have to believe it first... to know it has been tried and tested. Maybe in some contexts you can use them synonymously, but not in all cases I don't think.
