The relevant info you can post ausguerila is to answer the questions people put to you.... otherwise it looks like you are trolling. Countless threads started with benign questions about fairly normal everyday occurrences as if there was something strange about them.... like laughing and sneezing.. and then dismissing any questions with the persistence of searching for some weird and wonderful answer... answer the questions! So, as I asked before, "what is it that makes you think that it was a hair that snapped? How could you possibly know this and what does it sound like?"

A normal occurrence from a whimsical human brain? Who knows without further investigation what made you chuckle. What computer game was it.... what in particular made you laugh?

Covering windows with a heat reflecting substance
DrP replied to NimrodTheGoat's topic in Other Sciences
Reflective mirrored windows (or foil) probably isn't the way to go... There was that high rise in London a few years back that had to install shading on it's windows because, being concaved and reflective, they were focusing the sun down to a small area in the street... melting car parts and causing discomfort to people. Like ants under a glass in the sun. As suggested, blinds or curtains should help a lot. Don't they put blinds on the outside of the windows in seriously hot countries? I think so. -
Happened to me on Sunday. It reminded me that this also happens a lot when you announce it.. I said to my friend "... ahh.. I'm going to sneeze.." but it fizzled out. It reminded me that these fizzling out sneezes often come when you actually announce you are going to sneeze. I think they do it just to prove you wrong or something. I would have preferred to have had a good sneeze.

[Solved] How to find number of atoms in a sample of an element
DrP replied to Homey's topic in Homework Help
ah... thus the 6 atoms... I think it is about 6 x 10^24 or something like that. ;-) (Just looked it up - it's x10^23 - still huge though) -
You have to put some energy into it to get a wave to propagate along a rope... it will loose energy all the way as the wave moves along the rope 'lifting' the rope up as it travels. Tie one end to a post and shake the other end. With the shaking, depending on how hard and often, you can control the amplitude and frequency of the wave as it propagates along the rope. When you shake it, you will see the wave you made move along the rope. You can even see a wave propagating along a totally limp rope laid straight out along the ground. 'Whip' one end up and down sharply and the up/down motion will travel as a wave along the rope until it runs out of energy or until it reaches the end of the rope.

[Solved] How to find number of atoms in a sample of an element
DrP replied to Homey's topic in Homework Help
Haven't done this for ages... but just a quick question... If it is 27g/mol and you have 27 grams of aluminium, then wouldn't that mean that you have 1 mol of aluminium and thus Avagadro's number of atoms? -
I agree, I wouldn't describe it as weird... it is quite common for a sneeze to build but fail to climax. Did you break any nasal hair in the process? ;-)

Can manufacturing effectively be taught, only in the class.
DrP replied to fay's unKle's topic in Science Education
Through my University years I was lucky enough to have several secondments, placements and work experiences in industry. I also think I was lucky enough to have a few teachers that were interested in getting us ready for industry... they would give example of how things were relevant. The problem with having a 'manufacturing' course or an 'Industry' course is that it is too broad. It depends upon WHAT is being manufactured as to what academic discipline is best suited to learn to get you ready for the job. Uni courses and schools aren't there to make you 100% ready for your chosen job (what if someone else gets the job you train for anyway).... they are there to prepare you with a basic set of skill and knowledges for the rest of your career... If you get a degree in Chemistry for example, you are a long way off from being a professional chemist or a coatings manufacturer or a firework designer... but you have your degree which proves in part that you can learn and retain complex information that will be useful. When you get your job or academic placing even, you THEN learn all that is required to make you an expert in THAT field, often calling from the experiences you picked up from uni. Also - my Ph.D. was more useful than my degree for such things... doing a degree may have taught me academic things... but doing a Ph.D. APPLIED what I had learnt as we discussed in meetings the projects that the group was undertaking, all of us having inputs into the meetings. My secondments were mainly during this time also and I got experience of how to apply the learning I had acquired in the previous years. You just can't teach everything... you need a balance of learning AND experience as you grow and progress through your career. I still learn new things all of the time. -
How would anyone know? No-one has ever detected one... they are speculation and we do not even know they exist for certain. As for thoughts and ideas... that is way above my head with where we currently are in science. I would wait for the gravity wave people and the LHC lot to do more research and see what they come up with.... whether or not they will find something out in our lifetime though is uncertain.

I'm pretty certain that no one could have come up with quantum mechanics without a thorough understanding of classical science.

Not sure... I would GUESS at either ambivalence, because they ignore you when they put your foot in the pond (although this suggests that they are used to you and do not perceive you as a threat... this might just go for any human); love, as in their god because you feed them and are outside of their pond universe and are something incomprehensible to them; they could be frightened by you if they thought you were a predator; or probably very little as they are renowned for having very crap memories. If you were me then I would probably try to romanticise the situation a bit and say that they think of you as a pal... they are your pets after all. That said - I still think that you probably give the situation a lot more thought than they would or indeed ever could. I don't think they are capable of the same kind of contemplative thoughts that you, or even a cat or a dog are capable of. Dogs dream... it shows they do at least form thoughts and fantasies outside of eat, move, eat, poo, move, eat. It is obvious from observing and interacting with dogs and cats that they are capable of thoughts (and feelings?) beyond basic survival. I don't think you are going to get much more than that from a fish though.

I would say they probably look up to John Cleese and Ronnie Barker... but probably look down on Ronnie Corbett. (if you remember that old sketch ;-) lol ) Maybe they look down on grubs and little edible worms... although being honest, I reckon you might be over thinking it, I doubt goldfish think that much about it - not in the same capacity as you do anyway. It has been debunked that they only have a 7 second memory, but I still don't think that they are associated much with deep thought. I do not know if they are capable of picturing their own position in the food chain or not. .... PS - It's hot here too in the SE.

What was the video game? Sometimes we laugh at something quite dark (as a release of stress maybe as mentioned above)... I saw this clip from a video game where a soldier (with pretty good modern day graphics) was hiding behind a wall for a bit looking quite sneaky when, BAM!, all of a sudden a huge great tank comes SMASHING through the wall right where he was standing, totally obliterating him!.... this shouldn't really be funny.... you had to see it really, but it gives one of those "WoW!" moments accompanied with laughter.... but really, there is nothing funny about a soldier being run over by a tank... maybe it was the irony of it (being a metal tank and all... bud um tiss!) - the irony of the guy thinking he was safe behind the wall then all of a sudden - BAM! Nothing left of him.

The thoughts of Cats and Dogs: "They feed me, groom me, let me out when I want to go out, clean up my droppings....".... DOGS:....."They must be Gods!" CATS......"I must be a God!" GOLDFISH...."if he puts his foot in here I can nibble the cheese off of it"

When they say that the universe in infinite I think it means the spatial dimensions just go on for ever in all directions. I don't think it means that there are an infinite number of atoms. In fact I would have thought that there would be a finite number of atoms in our infinite universe..... I don't see what it has to do with an after life though.

She also spent a heck of a lot of money given to her to help the poor on campaigns to stop people using condoms... because, yea, more unwanted pregnancies and sexually transmitted diseases are just what the slums of Calcutta needs.

Also, with regard to 'leaving the windows open' - that could be viewed as a security risk - even if left open a fraction that can make it much easier to break into a car..... Although saying that, if someone REALLY want's to get into your car they will, regardless of whether the windows are open or not, but there is no point in making it easier for them.

Why do water drops leave marks on glass that won't come off easy?
DrP replied to Jmanm's topic in Applied Chemistry
Try giving the vinegar time to act - it isn't a magic wipe - it needs time to act on the minerals to break them up... maybe press the wet cloth onto the mark for about 10 or 20 seconds before scrubbing. It might take some pressure with the wiping too. Maybe wet the glass with the vinegar and leave it for a min or 2 then get wiping with the vinegar damped cloth after it has had time to soak into the stains. Lots of rinsing afterwards too. I find tree sap annoying when it sticks to the windscreen... it should come off easily (which it does) but it doesn't straight away and can smear badly when first wetted and wiped... which can be annoying when driving if the washer bottle isn't topped up fully. -
Would it even need solar panels and fans? Would not a simple hole in the top and bottom work to get a flow of air passing though. Of course you would need to be able to close off the holes in bad weather. My car was so hot the other night after work... For the first time in about a year I pushed the big red button and reached for the shades. 8-)

I don't have a problem with the people running the country getting a high wage or even little perks. It is a drip in the ocean compared to the taxes they raise and I would rather have the people running the show be free from any financial problems.... that way they can focus on running the country rather than trying to get rich. If they are greedy and want to have their 6 jobs and do dodgy deals for personal financial gain then that is despicable and should be punished. We had one guy a few years back that was SO loaded he had several houses... greedy bastard wasn't rich enough apparently and claimed about 5 grand from the tax payer to upgrade the palace at the centre of his pond that he kept his ducks in (he claimed £30K gardening maintenance bills over 3 years). I would turn a blind eye to some of it but that is just is just taking the piss.

I think it's different in the UK - Tips aren't or never used to be compulsory or expected. These days it is expected I think for restaurant staff. It used to be customary when I was younger to tip the taxi drivers, video man and hairdressers.... that was it. Tips for waiters were for posh restaurants not cafes... It's different now and tips are expected everywhere more or less.

Last night I gave the biggest tip I have ever given... mainly because the waitress remembered me from a long time back and seemed pleased to see me... she is usually lovey anyway... she also told me it was her birthday last week, so I gave her a tenner on top of my 20 quid bill. She seemed quite pleased... and she is so so cute.. I'm a total sucker for a 33 year old who looks about 20. I realise that this might be considered sexism in a way... if it had been a waiter rather than a waitress I very much doubt I would have tipped him a tenner... even if it was his birthday and he blinked at me with those massive big brown eyes.
