I am finding it alright. It crashes and freezes more than 7/XP on my laptop but that could be the hardware.... What really pissed me off about it was that I was given NO choice over the upgrade... I was using 7or XP on my laptop and it just decided to upgrade itself without even asking me for permission. I had to just stop whatever I was working on and wait for it to finish..... from then on it keeps crashing, so, even if it is better I have a dislike for it as it was forced on me and caused my PC to continually freeze and crash.. "Bring me Bill Gates"! (South Park movie).

Can bacteria or algae feed the world?
DrP replied to Eclipse's topic in Biochemistry and Molecular Biology
...and you get vitamins from the jam of course! ;-) mmm... ....nom nom nom! Thinking doughnuts for tea! Haven't had one in months... had about 1 this year so far. lol (maybe about 2 or 3 apples at most). -
Can bacteria or algae feed the world?
DrP replied to Eclipse's topic in Biochemistry and Molecular Biology
I think you should eat an apple if you are over weight, peckish or haven't had enough fruit or veg for the day. I think you should eat the doughnut if you are planning on running a marathon later in the day or week. If we were both stranded on an island and we had a box float ashore with a doughnut and an apple - you can have the apple and I'll take the doughnut then. I think it depends on your reason for eating - an apple wont fulfil your calorie needs for the day. -
Atomic Biology: a proposed new branch of science
DrP replied to AtomicBiology's topic in Speculations
I think that at the atomic level it is nothing but chemistry/physic/biochemistry.. it doesn't become biology until you have huge complex living systems or cells (even the simplest of life is huge and complex compared to an atom). -

Love the idea of printing it to 3d meat. Sounds a bit yuk now but the next generation of people won't know any different so will be fine with it I suppose. -
QUOTE DrKrettin: "where in the animal kingdom do you find cruelty" ....Our kitten was an enthusiastic hunter. She liked butterfly chasing. Problem was she liked to release them for another chase but they flew off..... she came up with an ingenious way to stop the flying. I found her with a butterfly that she had pinned down with one claw and was stripping/shredding its wings with the other. She put 4 or 5 rips in each wing, very carefully and meticulously - enough that the thing wouldn't die but could not fly. Her little toy could then flap its way around the garden without really getting off the ground so she could chase and re catch it again over and over... I though this was an amazing act of intelligence from her (associating the wings with flight, shredding them and leaving the creature alive etc..).... but also very cruel!

The "cide" suffex means "killer"... So an insecticide is an insect killer and herbicide a herb (plant) killer. Pesticide is general to cover most pests, like insects, weeds etc.. You also get the same suffix with other words too, like biocide (killer of biological organisms), matricide (the killing of ones own mother), infanticide etc... Although infanticide is an act.... not an in can spay unfortunately. ;-)

Of course - detection methods better, reporting of them better, so hard to tell. In my own experience, as anecdotal evidence ;-), I experienced none what so ever for more than the first 30 years of my life, but have lived through 2 as an adult!. I wouldn't draw too many conclusions from my experience though! :-D

Neodymium Magnet (demagnetising process)
DrP replied to samelt's topic in Modern and Theoretical Physics
I bought a 2.5 x 2.5 x 1 inch neodymium 52M block earlier in the year - it was a super fridge magnet for 6 months or so which had about 5 or 6 coins stuck end to end projecting out from the fridge on it in a perfectly horizontal line. I assume there are more sensible uses for such a thing, but hey - coin levitation was cool for a bit... visitors would comment on the power of my fridge magnet when they saw the coins tip to tip projecting out into the room. It's in my car now - I can't tell you why it is in there because I undertook an illegal act with it - lol... just for fun and to see if it would work. It did! I too am wondering if it as strong as when I first got it. -
You could give the power to a selected few though? People that have been here for years and are know to be contributors and members that are trusted.... like an army of mini-mods?

Neodymium Magnet (demagnetising process)
DrP replied to samelt's topic in Modern and Theoretical Physics
I seem to remember that high temperature can kill a Neodymium magnet. I would assume that they can be demagnetise by another magnet but I would not how long it would take. Impact can demag a magnet too.... but the Nd ones are brittle so are more likely to break than demagnetise. -
QUOTE: "..finding objective truth..... not support atheistic motif" That's the thing though - science doesn't care about atheism or religion... it points out what we have found to be true to the best of our tests and knowledge.... and that truth points to there being no god (not the Abrahamic one anyway, or any of the world religions)... in fact it kind of ridiclues the idea. This isn't atheistic agenda, it is just the findings of science, the looking at reality and accepting it for what it is rather than being fooled by a work of fiction. I believed in the same God for many many years.... but when you are true to your self and make your decision based on evidence rather than fear or pier pressure then the idea does seem real stupid. Looking back I cannot see how I ever believed all of the lies and contradictions at all.... I was always sceptical of the many priests with their varied and differing views from different denominations... I kept my own personal relationship with God - looking back I was either crazy or brain washed or deceived because I really believed it at times in my life. I have seen some 'miraculous' things. Best wishes.

lol - I was thinking of that sketch earlier w.r.t. this thread.

...spectroscopic methods? Super useful in industry... down to QM.

He called me an ignorant, arrogant fool, ignored my questions.... then repeatedly ignored me. I only said that to me, an outside observer to the conversation, that it did not look as though others had insulted him and that if he felt insulted by someone pointing out that he is wrong about something then he should look inward.... You know what? I don't usually do this but I'll say it anyway - I think HE is an arrogant, deluded, ignorant fool.... a right little prick actually. I am glad he's gone. Sure as hell is bull shit his theory will be shit and full of woo and BS. He'll never be prime minister - he is a complete dick.
-
There is plenty of evidence that lack of sleep is bad for you I think... I'd look it up and post it, but you won't read it because you know it anyway. So, evidence for the opposite of what you wrote is evidence that it is BS. Giraffe - yawn.
-
Certainly wont prolong life... the body sleeps for a reason. And are you ignoring me for a reason? What did you make of the Giraffe Laryngeal nerve?

Can a silver dollar be used to santize water?
DrP replied to Elite Engineer's topic in Biochemistry and Molecular Biology
with an old silver coin though you get a patina build up on the surface - I still reckon you could get germs growing on that regardless of the silver in the coin... I could be wrong though, I have not read into it at all. Oligodynamic - new word for me. Thanks. -
...was that a joke? I thought it was funny... anyone claiming to be the greatest living martial artist has to be a crack pot - I see what you did there - that was funny. +1 for humour. re trading - did you make your billions doing this or did you have a mint to start with? It is easier with capital to start with... try making a billion from scratch. ;-) Giraffe?

(RE: cellular automata) - It IS a romantic idea... would be absolutely amazing if it were true... whatever actually IS will be absolutely amazing if we ever work it out. More likely we will go through several wrong models before getting close.. how would one prove such a thing? Of course we can't - so these theories are pure speculation without any evidence. Maybe one day we (humans that is - we'll be long dead) will find a way of proving such a thing to be true or false. The universe is an amazing place. Don't be surprised if people are sceptical if you claim to know everything.. (especially if you won't actually tell them how you know or share your evidence for belief, lol). In fact I would expect a fair bit of ridicule thrown in with that skeptisism - it's the way of the world unfortunately... I feel we are going in circles. Still - what about that giraffe then?

yea - my first thought also was that there would be germs on the coin. -
Answer my question about the Giraffe Simon. I'll forgive you for calling me an arrogant fool (that's one of the good things I learned as a Christian), but answer the question. ....and that crap about Dawkins et al is ridiculous. I'll forgive you because you are obviously emotional about all this - having your beliefs shattered by reason can be emotional and hard to accept.
-
Simon - How does the Laryngeal nerve in a giraffes neck fit with your design beliefs vs evolution? It was the final nail in the coffin on creationism for me. When you step back from it and realise the bible is complete fiction it all seems so clear and obvious mate. No one knows what happened right at the start and you wont find the answer in fictitious books. Also - I never saw anyone insulting you - if you feel insulted by being told you are wrong and refuse to investigate the actual facts then you ARE a crackpot - that's not an insult just an observation. Prove whoever it was that said you were wrong by engaging in sensible reasoned conversation rather than forcing a work of fiction on people. The above rebuttals are all sound imo, read them and think about how dumb your opening post actually sounds.
