It's ironic that about 20 years ago, I learned in school that in the (evil) communist countries, everybody had a job, because the (evil) state forced you to work. Now, 20 years later, Western countries are considering to force people to work to get their welfare incomes or unemployment benefits.

Ok, I exaggerated it a bit. The OP does not question all of science... only "a lot of accepted theories in Physics". Accept my apologies. The speculations forum is no place for jokes. I note that you posed a valid and interesting question... and perhaps you should ask it again in a separate thread in the physics forum. Note (again) that this is the Speculations forum. Anyway... since questioning something fundamental takes time... we might as well do a little thought-experiment. Let's assume that the OP is right, and that "a lot of accepted theories in Physics" are wrong. What do we do next?

Discovery of new molecule can lead to more efficient rocket fuel
CaptainPanic replied to Spyman's topic in Science News
Does anyone know what state this material is in at ambient pressure and temperature? What kind of rocket can be powered by it? Solid? Liquid? Monopropellant? I admit that I haven't been able to read too much of the articles. Some links didn't seem to work. -
Ethanol (alcohol) will lower the melting point. Instead of 0 degrees C, it will only freeze at -4 degrees C or something. Here's a table of the freezing point of water/ethanol mixtures. Another important question is: What other items did you have in the fridge? Try to put the jug of cidre in another spot in the fridge, and see if it turns to a liquid again.

I think that there is a difference between pig meat now and pig meat a long time ago (100 years or more)... but I cannot back that up with a reference or something (sorry).

The fault: you incorrectly increase the number of significant figures.

Is there an indoor tree ideal for cats to lounge in?
CaptainPanic replied to andrewnel's topic in The Lounge
A popular indoor tree is a ficus. If you have some money, you might be able to buy a big one, which is already quite old... Another random suggestion: An Olive tree. But a tree that's strong enough to hold a cat needs branches of at least 1 cm, but preferably a lot thicker. Those trees are quite OLD... especially if you measure it in cat-years. Even in the garden, such trees are at least 5-10 years old. It's not going to be easy to find those in your local garden center. -
I still don't understand marijuana legalization people.

Weird idea to undergo a drug test at work. I would only agree to such a test if I had a job which required me to be on stand-by 24/7. I don't really see the point of it in any other way. Or is it perhaps just to ensure the continuity of the company - making sure their employees don't end up in jail? Then more tolerant laws or complete legalization would also instantly make the company less strict as a result. I'm curious to find out why a private company would assist the state in upholding a law - do you have privatized speed cameras on your parking lot as well? -
I'm sorry if this sounds rude, but I am afraid you just don't understand heat transfer... The amount of energy (heat) transferred equals: [math]E=U\cdot{A\cdot{\Delta{T}}}[/math] in which: [math]E[/math] = energy (Joule) [math]U[/math] = overall heat transfer coefficient(depends on a lot of things) in (J/m2K) [math]A[/math] = surface area (m2) [math]\Delta{T}[/math] = temperature difference (K) Notice that the formula contains "[math]\Delta{T}[/math]". So, we take the difference between room temperature (probably about 295 K) and the coolant. If we have 1 coolant at 1 Kelvin And another coolant at a gazillion decimal zero's and then a one Kelvin Then the temperature difference for our formula is in one case 295-1 = 294 And in the other case it's 295-0.0000000000000000000000000000001 = 295 That's a whopping 0.3% increase in cooling! And a whopping 100000000% increase in power consumption (or more - I'm just guessing). So, that's a bad idea. Ok. So we have established that going near the absolute zero is completely and utterly pointless if your only goal is to absorb heat from the surroundings. That leaves us with just 1 question: what is the cheapest "coolant"? And your answer is: cooling water. Just plain cold water. You only use fancier coolants, such as glycol mixtures, liquid nitrogen or even liquid helium if you actually want to make something really frickin' cold. But unless you want to simulate the arctic in your room, I would just use water.

Still, it doesn't hurt to contact a local archeologist. I am sure that any archeologist will be happy to keep you guys around.

I still don't understand marijuana legalization people.
CaptainPanic replied to Destiny's topic in Politics
I agree. The numbers I linked to earlier support this. Under the assumption that European countries are comparable, it is a striking fact that the percentage of marijuana users in the Netherlands (where it's freely available) is lower than the countries around it such as the UK, France. This indeed suggests that the fact that it's illegal is not very relevant. I just found this source too, which claims to compare the Netherlands to the USA. Those numbers would suggest that the war on drugs (making it illegal, and use strict laws and punishments) isn't working to reduce the number of users. Unfortunately, we don't have many countries where weed is legalized or decriminalized... so it's difficult to make a statistical analysis of the data. Personally, I think that legalization of marijuana is the only way to go. -
Come on... let the guy who wrote the opening post explain the next step... I am too curious! No need to go in depth to the proof of his theory here. Let's just assume that all physics is wrong... shall we? Please? Just this thread. Thanks. tomjin, please explain what we must do next... I'm very curious to find out what we must do now that we accept that all science is wrong.

What I wrote is: you have to adapt to the local culture where you live to be accepted. What you wrote is: the tolerance level of the culture is too narrow. It is true that a culture can be extremely tolerant, and accept almost anyone as they are, unchanged. A culture can also be extremely narrow, and almost everyone will need to adapt and change to fit. I strongly believe that we're undergoing a process of world-wide narrowing of cultures. I propose that this is a major effect of nationalism (or in the States, it may perhaps be called partisanism?). Or perhaps it is even the definition of nationalism: that your tolerance of other cultures becomes less, because of an increased love for your own?

Who are "they"?

If an electron absorps a photon, its energy increases. The electron then emits a photon, and loses the energy again. This is all well-described in the theory of energy states. Electrons can get excited by photons.

Ok. Almost all physics is wrong. And all other science is wrong too? What do we do next? What is the path to enlightenment? Show us the way.

And now imagine that we said the same, while discussing Muslim immigrants... lol. I understand why you wrote that... it is a form of wishful thinking. It's never nice when people who think the same as you change to another way of thinking which you absolutely disagree with. And it is very nice when people who are very different adapt to your culture. But it's a simple fact that people who move adapt. Any immigrant, whether they crossed a single state border, or several oceans, needs to choose between adapting or being an outcast.

Vigorous mixing can make a temperature nearly uniform... of course, that is "uniform" for practical and industrial applications... not for measuring 0.0000000000 degrees C, at 10 decimals.

Experiments are never "exact". That said, there are ways to make water very, very pure. Supercooling should not be a problem. Just measure the temperature when ice is melting, not freezing. The rest is about the definitions of Celsius. Wikipedia knows more than me (click!).

Jon13 hasn't logged in since May 27, 2008... I don't think he will answer your question soon.

I also believe that the waste heat of a combustion engine can be utilized to give a car some more power... especially during cruising (constant velocity, long trips on a highway). Steam may be a good way to do that. But I don't understand your concept... I'm sorry, I just don't understand it. I don't say it's good or bad. I just have no clue. I read your pictures twice, and I have seen enough schematics in my life (I'm an engineer)... and this is just too vague for me. I have no idea which parts are supposed to move... I cannot see where any piston connects. If you want engineering-feedback, you really have to give a better explanation.

The Official "Introduce Yourself" Thread
CaptainPanic replied to Radical Edward's topic in The Lounge
Sounds interesting... I would suggest that you make a comment about your book on our special books subforum, called "book talk"... and maybe drop some seasonal greetings and a 'hello' on the introduce-yourself thread. ! Moderator Note The second part has been taken care of; "Hello" posts are generally moved to this thread -
I still don't understand marijuana legalization people.
CaptainPanic replied to Destiny's topic in Politics
On a relative scale of politeness, I think that the OP's post is less polite than mine. I haven't used rude words (instead, it was the OP who calls pot-smokers "idiots", and said that certain people were "full of shit"). I am very surprised that I get the public reprimand here, while the OP walks free to insult again. Please explain me your definition of politeness, and I will try to adapt. On an absolute scale of politeness, I do not accept that I wrote something impolite. Sometimes you have to call a horse a horse. The OP's post was founded on a circular argument, but it contains more fallacies than just that. It contained rude words, too. It has little or no scientific facts to back it up. It contains no references. I should be allowed to call such a post "poor" or "complete nonsense". We all constantly ostracise people on this forum - hell, we have a special "speculations" (formerly pseudo-science) forum for that. People who cannot write a decent post sometimes even get banned. Pangloss, I will forget your post (the phrase that I quoted here) for now. You wrote it as a member, not as a moderator... I know you will be more objective as a mod than as a member. -
Let me start by saying "sorry", because I am about to be very blunt. I have no idea how your contraption works. I cannot understand your picture, and I cannot understand the text. The words in the text ('saddle tank', 'short pipe' and a couple more) are nowhere to be found in the picture. You don't explain the heat source, and you don't explain the cold sink. You use all kinds of arrows and V-shaped pointers to show where gas or liquid is flowing. You use the same lines for arrows and pipe-walls. I'm not gonna say that it doesn't work... I am only saying that you are probably still the only one who understands it. Unless you give a better explanation, I advice everyone to ignore it.

Have you used google? You need to ask more precise questions... we're not a free helpdesk for people who don't know where to start. Do you want to build it from scratch? Maybe you should just order a kit online... then you can learn all the different parts. Then you can build your own design later. Sorry if this sounded rude.
