  1. I agree with imatfaal: Do not give them any reason to start asking questions, if you can avoid it. Writing in your own passport may be enough reason for someone to kindly request you to step out of the line and follow the officer into a separate room. Firing squad? Highly unlikely. A delay in passing the border, with optional longer detainment until your embassy gets you out: Definitely possible. If you want to remember where you were, at what time: keep a travel log. Just an ordinary booklet where you keep notes. From experience, I'd advise you to start a new log for every trip. Not because police may want to read it... but just because there is a higher risk you lose your old notes when you carry them with you than when they are safely kept on a bookshelf at home. By the way, I think that in almost every country it is your legal right to ask for a stamp when you pass a border... and in certain countries, it is highly recommended to get one, or they may treat you as an illegal immigrant - and you will face whatever punishment there is on illegal immigration.
  2. Big Ad. p.s. Moontanman, I am sorry for editing your post (it looks a little silly now, and everybody can blame me for that), but I just wanted to avoid confusion!
  3. As far as know, a hydrogen bond is defined as a bond between molecules (or in certain cases between two groups of the same molecule). Hydrogen bonds do not turn our oceans into one giant molecule. A DNA molecule has many hydrogen bonds. But it has covalent bonds that are the reason we call it a molecule.
  4. ! Moderator Note xyzt, I have had it up to here (*points somewhere pretty high up*) with you. You seem incapable of discussing in a polite manner. Perhaps you do not see the difference between a person who attacks your idea, and a person who attacks your person. You certainly don't seem to see the difference between a Big Red Moderator Note and a normal post, or you would have taken my previous post more seriously. You do not seem to realize who you are dealing with here. I am a moderator. I don't care who is wrong or right. I don't care about the topic of this thread. In my role of moderator, I don't care about the contents at all. But I do care about people behaving on this forum, and you don't behave. You are trying to 'win' this discussion by calling names and by discrediting your opponent, while the other members in this thread are just discussing the science. I enforce the rules here, and at this point you are the only one in this thread who is violating the rules, specifically section 2, rules 1, 4 and 5. Please note that this was your final warning. Any further violations of the rules of our forum will get you suspended from this forum (even if you convinced you are right, and the other is wrong). Do not respond to this mod note in this thread. If you have any issues with this mod note, use the report function and (other) moderators will have a look at it.
  5. In the EU, the food additives have an "E-number". Although you should always doublecheck wikipedia if this is for work/school, this list in the link gives a nice impression of all the regulated food additives. In the EU, the complete list of ingredients is always printed on the label (it is mandatory), including all the E-numbers that were used. Here are two examples of labeling in the EU: [edit] For those interested, the official E-numbers can also be found online (.pdf warning) but they are giant pdf files.
  6. If we organize this, it should be initiated by the staff. But I'd like to observe this thread for a bit to see if people support this idea (please reply if you support it!!)
  7. ! Moderator Note Iggy, xyzt, you are both violating rule 1 of our forum (flaming, uncivilized behavior). You have both posted remarks which were aimed only to insult the other person, but which were irrelevant for a third person who is interested in the science only. It is very common to disagree in science. And it is not against the rules to be wrong on this forum. However, if you cannot discuss your differences in a civilized manner, this thread will be closed (the OP has indicated to be done here) and you both will gain some warning points. This warning says nothing about who is right and who is wrong (because frankly I don't know). From what I read, this may all be a miscommunication, or it may be a fundamental difference in opinion. I suggest that you start off by trying to figure out what you disagree on, and then move on to answer that. Cooperation in this matter will get you a lot further than this shouting contest you're having now. Do not respond to this moderator note in this thread. If you have any issues with this note, use the report button at the bottom of this post.
  8. I always get a little angry when I see these kind of messages. There is no way anyone can possibly keep track of all the things that are healthy or that will cause cancer and kill you. There is no way that anyone can keep track of all the honest scientific publications. And in addition, there are lots of 'sponsored' investigations which are about as objective as asking a used car salesman about the reliability of his cars. And the mainstream popular media often just won't even mention which research was independent, and which was sponsored. Even though the link provided suggests this was an honest research, I generally just ignore messages like this. A varied diet is a healthy diet. In my case, it includes a bit of pretty much everything.
  9. ! Moderator Note Just an update: Amanbir Singh Grewal has been banned from the site in order to ensure he gets enough fresh air, and doesn't waste his time discussing nothing on the internet. (He requested to be banned). So, please don't waste your time on the internet responding to this thread anymore.
  10. So, I am Dutch. Also, I am about to go on a little bike trip into the country side. Do I get a cookie now?
  11. Thanks! I did a quick Google search, but came up empty handed... It will be a while before I can give my feedback. The reason for this is that my (other) laptop just shut down, and now it won't even boot without cable. And I forgot my adapter somewhere else. *sigh* Laptops (and computers in general) need more override buttons. "Do you really want to start your computer now?" "YES, I really want that. I own you, now obey my wishes". I know there is some juice left in that battery... but it won't even boot. *curses* I need some data stored on that thing!
  12. Just a quick question for the Windows 7 experts out there: is there a way to tell my laptop to deplete its battery more before shutting down? Right now, it automatically shuts down when it claims it has 32 minutes (or thereabout) of battery left, at 12% of the full battery. I feel cheated, because with about 1 hour left, it actually gives me less than 30 minutes to do something! Personally, I'd rather risk having unsaved data than a safe but early shutdown. But at the very least it could shut down a little later? Any thoughts?
  13. If you would put them together perfectly, then it would again become a single mirror. However, you probably put the pieces together at slightly different angles, so they reflect in slightly different directions, and that means it looks like a collection of many small mirrors after it got put back together. Does that answer the question (I am not 100% certain I understood the question)?
  14. We actually have 4 guards protecting the realm of the mods. One always tells the truth. One always tells lies. One stabs people who ask tricky questions... and then there's hypervalent_iodine. Basically you don't become a mod. One day you wake up, and you are a mod. And all you remember is a bright light in the middle of the night.
  15. ! Moderator Note What have you done so far to solve this problem? We cannot distinguish between a student who is very much stuck, and a lazy student who hopes someone else will do the work. Show us what you've done so far, and we'll provide some help. Other members are encouraged NOT to help, until javaswing has convinced us that he's not simply lazy (it's up to everyone individually to judge this).
  16. The Netherlands also has a satire / humor news website (link in Dutch, obviously). But unfortunately, our news is typically so boring that their jokes have to be more mundane as well. Current headlines: - Dutch government wants to continue the Ministry of the interior and kingdom relations (I'll explain the joke: we've always had that ministery) - Usain Bolt loses to Dutch Sprinter (our trains are called 'sprinters'. The article comes with a picture of a Dutch train). - Court of Audits urges more short term thinking by government (joke: in reality we should be doing more long term thinking). Very little violent news would be credible here. Still, I ran. Because I can.
  17. ! Moderator Note @sidhu, Please note that the thread is already 2 years old. Some of the people responding to the thread may no longer be active. NathanUT has not logged in to this forum since May 4th 2011. It is not against the rules to respond to an old thread like this. But you should realize that you are only doing it for your own entertainment, not to help the person who opened the thread.
  18. They probably mean the "Energy density". The amount of energy that you can extract from nuclear material (in terms of useful energy per kilogram of fuel) is more than any conventional (chemical) fuel.
  19. ! Moderator Note haley5p, Please note that this is obviously homework. You will not get any answers, unless you show what you have so far done to solve these problems. Posting only the questions is not sufficient. You are obviously doing some engineering course, not a management course, so asking other people to do your work is not going to teach you the necessary skills to pass the class. Everybody, Please do not answer any questions until our OP has shown any efforts into solving these problems.
