! Moderator Note haley5p, Please note that this is obviously homework. You will not get any answers, unless you show what you have so far done to solve these problems. Posting only the questions is not sufficient. You are obviously doing some engineering course, not a management course, so asking other people to do your work is not going to teach you the necessary skills to pass the class. Everybody, Please do not answer any questions until our OP has shown any efforts into solving these problems.

! Moderator Note I'm temporarily closing this thread for a review. We just want to make sure this is not a commercial spammer trying to plug a product. If I am really living under a rock, and just missed the latest major development in web forums, I apologise (but since online reviews are pretty divided about this product's quality, I don't think this is the next big thing). My main reason for closing the thread is that the 2nd post seemed a little too commercial (3 links to the app store). I've reported this to be reviewed by other moderators. The final decision about this thread will not be my decision alone. [edit / update] Thread was reviewed by 4 moderators, and will remain closed. Thread Closed. -

CaptainPanic replied to Raghav Dua's topic in Suggestions, Comments and Support
I may live under a rock, but I have never heard of Tapatalk. What is it, and why should the volunteers who run this forum spend their time to get this up and running? Also, to my knowledge, you can visit this forum through a smart phone without problems. -
Without any medical advances we are predicted to peak at 10 billion people in this world (if everything goes well). This is explained in this excellent TED talk by Hans Rosling (13 minutes). If our average age goes up to 100 years, that number is going to increase to about 12-14 billion. (This last statement is not supported by the video, but should follow logically). Obviously it is desirable to live longer, but we simply may not be able to take care of those people. Although we may discuss the statistics, in this discussion, I assume this is just a fact. Is that an argument against medical research, and in favor of military investments? Turning the question around: is it desirable to keep military budgets as high as they are, and also keep medical research budgets as low as they are in order to keep the future population at 10 billion? I think the answer to that should be no. We should never deliberately slow down research because we fear the consequences. And we should certainly not see the military as a way to do population control (even if this happens merely by the allocation of budgets, not by the actual killing of people). I think these two concepts should be split into 2 questions: 1. Should be reduce the military budgets, and allocate some of the money/resources to other more noble goals? 2. Should one of those goals be the medical research to increase the average life expectancy of humans to 100? The answer to question 1 should (imho) be a loud YES. The answer to question 2 should be a little more careful. Yes, we should invest in that, but we should also invest into agricultural, ecological and engineering (and other) topics, so that those extra people can have a life worth living.

Berries grow in hordes on Mars? Maybe that's why the planet is red: Berry stampede. On a sidenote: I seem to agree with ydoaPs: it is far more likely to be a shed or a barn than a house.

Would you rather be intelligent or happy?
CaptainPanic replied to turionx2's topic in General Philosophy
Tridimity, that is a very good argument. You explain the two different underlying assumptions that people based their choice on. Since these are different, we should probably never agree. Perhaps our OP (turionx2) can explain which is the intended point of view? It's the classic different betwee Scientists and Engineers -
Would you rather be intelligent or happy?
CaptainPanic replied to turionx2's topic in General Philosophy
If you'd be dumb enough, you wouldn't know the difference. You seem (I'm not sure) to assume that you'd be dumb and happy, but also ambitious with regards to your intelligence which in turn would make you unhappy (and then you'd be dumb and unhappy, which is a nightmare)? I imagine 'dumb and happy' to be something like a pet dog in a good family. I don't think it would be a bad life. -
I do not know which particular government you are talking about, but you are probably wrong. There are many pharmaceutical companies, as well as research institutes and universities that have permits to do experiments. Due to the dangers involved there are rules. Because of the dangers involved with drugs, we also have some rules.

I bike a fair amount myself (sometimes also similar distances, although not only in the city), and my experience is quite different: 1. My bike does not get dirty. The air over here in the Netherlands is not going to be significantly cleaner than in London, so the source must logically be local. That made me think it is just dirt from the street. The wheels of your own bike, as well as those of the cars and trucks around you can pick up dirt. You then essentially drive into it. If this is the case, you should find that the dirt forms thicker layers on forward facing surfaces. If however the layer is thicker on the top, it may be something falling down when you're parked. If it is distributed uniformly on all surfaces, this suggests that it originates in a vapor phase, which is rather worrying to be honest. Is there any heavy industry along the route you take? 2. I leave all the dirt on my bike chain. I make sure that my chain is well lubed, and the lube should protect it from all the dirt of the road. I wash my chain only when the municipality uses salt (against ice, in winter time), because the salt will corrode my chain. (Actually, if it is winter time, I just use an older bike that is already rusty, and I don't care about). If the bike needs a cleaning, I just go to the local car wash, and use a high-pressure water hose to spray everything off. After that, I apply new oil on the chain, and it's done. I would not recommend any solvents to dilute the oil off your chain. When you apply new lube, it will dilute the lube and will actually make the lube come off.

I choose really happy, and extremely unintelligent, over really intelligent and extremely unhappy... Luckily, in reality I am rather intelligent, and happy as well. -

Alright, so you say it is the press who must keep an eye on the government, not you yourself. But you have to read/watch that press, or they will stop doing what they do.
-
When you trust them to be good, you essentially also trust them to give the evidence for government involvement if there is any. Even if they do something unlawful, the government can just withhold evidence, and that means you can continue trusting them. You don't force the government to play any of its cards this way. It is a status where all the initiative is with the government, even if they do something bad (and decide to hide it). It is a typical relation that a small child has with its parents. I think this is an undesirable relation between a citizen and its government. What you suggest is that you trust your government until someone else finds out that it is not worthy of your trust. You put the entire burden of checking on your government with someone else. On the other hand, if you are more critical, and hold your government guilty until proven not guilty, you (if you get enough support) force them to show some of their cards. Almost every government will have some corruption, and there are always some bad apples. It is not just important that your country has methods to check on the politicians, agencies and the justice system. It is also important that you as a citizen are critical and engaged.

So, you don't want to have a discussion, but you do allow yourself to have the last word. I'll bite. I am curious. You think that the US government would never cause such tragedy as 9/11, yet there are plenty of other (evil) governments worldwide that obviously would. Why is your government so much better? I agree that there is insufficient data to say that the US government was involved. But I think there is also insufficient data to be certain that they weren't somehow involved. So far, your best argument against this is that it is ignorant to think that your government would do that. So, your argument is based on belief, which is not a strong argument at all. Personally, I do not blindly trust my own government in the Netherlands and in the EU. I think it is important that government institutions do not get too much autonomy. They must be kept in check by a parliament or otherwise democratically chosen government. The Separation of Powers can guarantee this. And personally, I think that in the USA, the separation of powers is a little broken. Certain government agencies have a lot of power, and operate nearly autonomously. Because 9/11 is generally a sensitive topic for Americans, I want to once again state that I also agree that there is no proof that the US government was behind it. I merely want to warn against blindly trusting your government.

I think it is as official as FOX news. It's just the Russians broadcasting their biased news. Many news channels have actual news, where they claim objectivity, and opinionated pieces, where they don't. Anyway, do you want to discuss RT (Russia Today), or also the 9/11 conspiracy theories?

7 deadly sins in nature.
CaptainPanic replied to sibridge's topic in Evolution, Morphology and Exobiology
Lust: The spiders who eat the male spider after mating? Gluttony: was covered above Greed: the squirrel that did this (youtube) Sloth: Tricky one. Eeh... I give up. Wrath: this elephant is pretty angry, although it isn't a deadly sin... Envy: was covered in the OP Pride: I dunno. Cats? It is easy to see when they look guilty, so maybe pride is their default look? It doesn't seem to kill them. Instead, we love them for it. -
I feel it may be useful to quickly respond to this (being in the role of moderator)... Obviously, an anonymous online forum is gonna attract all kinds of people, including the kind that likes to troll and flame. You don't have to put up with any of that kind of stuff. But rather than try to fix it as an adult, please instead just report it (the 'report' button is at the bottom of any post). In real-life, your good example may sometimes encourage people who are fighting to improve their behavior. Online, it seems that this doesn't work... which is why we have moderators. We have some tools with which we can improve bad behavior of others. Don't try to fix anything yourself. Just report. (And in case of doubt: report anyway. We'd rather have one report too much than one too little). Flaming and trolling does not belong on this forum, and the gender of the majority of our members has nothing to do with what is acceptable or not.

! Moderator Note Dear all, The thread has gone off topic many times already. Because we (moderators) cannot possibly untangle this long thread anymore, and because we probably should have stepped in much sooner (but didn't), we kindly request that everybody will at least attempt to steer the discussion back to the original topic. If you feel you must respond to something that is only sideways related, please attempt to keep it brief, and try to also make an on-topic remark. Thank you for your cooperation.

! Moderator Note I am closing this thread. It is a magnet for spammers for chemical companies, and the worst is that for once they actually spam on-topic, and it is difficult to ban them. The original question was asked in 2004, and I am sure that it was either answered, or the OP has found another source for this information. Thread closed.

These are generally good steps to take: Make a picture of the problem. It should include: whatever object (e.g. that pipe) and some arrows with flows of material or in this case: heat. Add some numbers to the picture if you know them. Describe to yourself the phenomenon that is taking place. And does your text book explain you anything about that phenomenon? Perhaps it even suggests a formula, or a method to solve it? Sorry that we are not more forthcoming, but the goal is that you learn something, not that you just get the answer. Good luck!
