What are you listening to right now?
CaptainPanic replied to heathenwilliamduke's topic in The Lounge
Noise of construction workers outside. -
Coffee with sugar is better than without. I totally agree with the fact that is all seems rather pointless. Inhaling would be just to get the effect of caffeine quicker. However, effects of coffee can be felt within 15 minutes. I know from experience, but this link also supports that.

If you think most scientists will not change their opinion, then why are you here? Please note, I think that scientists constantly learn new things, and constantly change their opinion... So I disagree with you. But I am still curious about your world view, and about how you see scientists.

! Moderator Note John Cuthber, overtone, We are not discussing bovine manure, and therefore certain choice of words is totally uncalled for. In a broader sense, your style of posting can be improved a lot. There are other, more polite ways to express a lack of agreement. Consider this an official warning. Improve your choice of words now. If you have anything to add that might interest an audience larger than just you two, feel free to post it. Otherwise, if you are posting merely to 'win' this argument, do not post.

Looking for Guidance on Funding for a Technology Startup
CaptainPanic replied to David Callahan's topic in The Lounge
To me it sounds like something like this. If anyone wishes to continue discussing the technology, we should open a new thread. I'll join you there. ! Moderator Note I think this discussion should be about how to start a start-up. For that discussion, the actual technology is not so relevant. -
! Moderator Note This thread was reviewed by multiple moderators, and it is our opinion that you fail to engage in the discussion. Regardless of the reason why you do this, you violate the 1st rule of the Speculations forum, and therefore the thread will be closed. Do not open a new thread on this topic. If you have new additional information that addresses some of the questions that were asked, contact the staff and we will consider to reopen the thread. Thread closed.

If anything, at least the anthropologists will enjoy this thread... And yes, this excuse can be used for almost every post on the internet...

! Moderator Note I copy-pasted an entire paragraph from this article into Google and got multiple hits. You are spamming the internet with this message, and I doubt that you joined our forum for a discussion. I will ask my fellow moderators for a review. For now, the thread is closed, and the links are removed, under the suspicion that it is spam (we keep a record of them, and if I am wrong, we will restore it). Thread closed for review

Looking for Guidance on Funding for a Technology Startup
CaptainPanic replied to David Callahan's topic in The Lounge
Here are some keywords that may get you started (I live in the Netherlands, not USA, so I am not too familiar with your local options, and especially not with the possible research grants). Some universities have "incubators" which are organizations that allow students (or other people?) to start up a company. They will assist with the ugly paperwork, and offer you a (cheap) office and sometimes even lab space. This is useful if you need to do some tests or build a first prototype. It may also be a place to do some necessary networking. As you say, you are a lonely guy now. You cannot do it alone. You will need a network. This could be a place. You can also search for national research grants. Typically, institutes, companies and universities build a 'consortium', and they all get a grant together. They will share their fundings (and often they have an NDA for the whole consortium, so your ideas are safe). You are gonna have to ask elsewhere for the names of these programs. If this is organized similarly to Europe, then this will be difficult for you. Typically, the networking and consortium formation is done by insiders only. Just try to figure out if relevant industries, institutes or universities are involved in such projects. And then try to figure out which person is responsible for those projects. Be warned, they may initially see you as competition for their research grants. Finally, if you already have a working prototype, you will just need a commercial party to become interested. This is the hardest thing to do for you - as they will be sceptical, and now that we have a financial crisis, they will not like to invest so soon. You can look for a commercial party that can apply your invention, or you can look for venture capital, who may invest and they help you to find an application. Sometimes, venture capital will invest even in an idea, and assist in funding the research. Obviously, that means you lose part of your rights to the patent... Be smart in your negotiations if you get to this stage. Getting a patent was probably a smart idea. The commercial party, if they become interested, will probably want a license, or maybe even buy it from you. Whatever you do, you have to talk to a LOT of people. Be as open to them as you possibly can. And make sure to dress ok. It sounds stupid, but it matters. Little disclaimer: I cannot guarantee that any of this is the best way forward for you. It is based on some observations only from myself. -
! Moderator Note Everybody, Please keep the discussion polite. Please refrain from mockery, especially now that it has become apparent that not all participants to the thread can distinguish between mockery and serious posts. We need to avoid confusion as much as possible. cixe, One issue we have with your posts is that you "believe" things, and it is apparent that a lot of others do not share your belief. So, either come up with some proof, or stop posting. That is how science works. If you keep repeating your beliefs, you are "soapboxing" or "preaching" which is against our rules. In addition, you have been asked multiple times to address the fact that you seem to explain a value of 206 (or maybe 207), while others say that the value for the muon-electron mass ratio is 206.7682843. It is up to you to make an effort to reach out, and address this exact value of 206.7682843. If you fail to do so, you are not participating in the discussion, which is against the rules. Breaking the rules too long will get the thread closed, and will get you punished one way or another. Do not respond to this moderator note. Instead, respond to the posts written by the other members.

Make sure not to catch Pneumoconiosis (a "miner's lung"). Those powder inhalers are used for very specific powders that can be absorbed entirely by the lungs.

LOL!! Oblivion, that video you posted is insane. Why would it be necessary to accuse other scientists of brainwashing (at 4m56s) the general public? If they give some solid evidence, scientists will be happy to change their opinion. If you really want to have a scientific discussion about this, please open a new thread (probably in Speculations). We all thought you were joking. It is a little late now to change this thread around.

! Moderator Note I'm moving this topic to The Lounge, because its aim seems to be to entertain more than to inform or challenge.

Awesome boobies. Also, read more about the penetration theory. It is important to know your penetration depth.

Yeah, I also get the feeling that it is slower during (European) mornings than the rest of the day.

! Moderator Note I do not think this is a homework assignment, so I am moving it to Science Education. Good luck with your app.

! Moderator Note As you say, we are bordering on the illegal things here. So, I want to ask everybody posting in this thread to quickly check the forum rules, and specifically section 2.3. Among other things, it says: - References to drug use are not permissible unless the references are scientific or otherwise useful as part of a discussion. - Descriptions of the construction or synthesis of illegal or hazardous devices or chemicals are subject to removal at the discretion of the staff. Remember that many SFN readers do not have the scientific background to know the appropriate precautions and safety procedures; all posts should contain a warning of the potential hazards and safety considerations of any dangerous procedure. As far as I am concerned, nobody broke the rules yet. I just thought I'd make sure everybody knows. (Also, since I participate, I should not moderate this thread, but a reference to the rules cannot possibly do much harm.)

How does an ordinary person know what's mainstream?
CaptainPanic replied to pears's topic in The Lounge
I agree with that. And also John Cuthber already explained his remark a bit better... so it seems we're all on the same line here (and that shouldn't be a surprise to anyone). There are some subtle differences how the mainstream scientific institutes get their money, and how the crackpots attempt to get their money. Let me add this: Crackpot website: black background, with Times new Roman font, and a purple blinking banner Mainstream science website: white background, with lots of green and blue (colors of nature, showing dedication to sustainability). Banners use flash. Crackpot website: "Give me your donations" Mainstream science website: "Currently seeking commercial participation" Crackpot website: Put the 'science' right on the front page Mainstream science website: no concrete science on the front page - at most some recent successes and highlights. No ongoing projects. Crackpot website: No slogan, no mission, no vision, and no strategy Mainstream science website: Slogan, mission, vision and strategy I'm just joking about the packaging. The main difference obviously between science and crackpottery is that the mainstream science is tested and tested again. That its underlying assumptions are clear and that other people - with sufficient materials and equipment - can reproduce the result, or prove it wrong. Crackpots often miss that approach altogether. That, for me, is the first signal that something weird is going on. -
Before you do that, make sure that your lungs can handle this oil (that the ability to absorb oxygen is not destroyed by a thin layer of oil on the inside of your lungs!!)... you don't want to drown in oil that you inhaled yourself. I am no doctor, and I am not sure that the lungs can absorb oils like your skin can (like with lotions and stuff). If the lungs cannot absorb it, you're pretty much gonna drown in it. Both oils and caffeine have a really low vapor pressure, so you don't evaporate much. However, you can spray it into a mist which you can inhale. But if you really must do something that stupid, then please put that caffeine in water. (Make really strong espresso). At least your lungs can breathe that water back out, because it will evaporate back into the air you breathe.

How does an ordinary person know what's mainstream?
CaptainPanic replied to pears's topic in The Lounge
I completely disagree with this. Almost every research group on the planet is in need of more funding. At least in the Netherlands, and perhaps even in all of Europe, researchers are encouraged to seek industrial/commercial participation for their research and especially their funding. Because of the economic crisis, the old-fashioned government-paid research budgets have been slashed everywhere. In addition, a lot of technologies and ideas get stranded in their commercialization phase, when still research money is required, but no more funds are available because the government says that commercial money should fund this, while the commercial parties think it is still too high-risk for them to participate. It's also called the "valley of death" of technology development. Google for it, and you'll find a ton of links. -
Enthalpy, at first glance, your estimate does not look too far off if you have pure caffeine at your disposal, which you don't. According to this source, the concentration in coffee can be (max.) 180 mg per 5 oz, or 180 mg per 150 ml, which I will approximate as 1 gram per liter. Since the vapor pressure of any chemical is roughly proportional with its concentration in the liquid phase (disclaimer: we're doing a crude order-of-magnitude estimate here, not a detailed analysis of caffeine distillation), that vapor pressure must be divided by 1000, meaning that the actual caffeine concentration in the vapor phase over cold coffee at 35C is 3 ppm (vol). Caffeine in roasted coffee beans can be as high as 3% (wt). If we completely ignore the fact that a some of the caffeine will be enclosed in a solid (and may not be able to evaporate), the vapor pressure could be as high as 0.009% (vol), which is still not so high. To get the equivalent of 1 cup of coffee (containing 100 mg caffeine), you would have to inhale approximately 1 m3 of air. However, we must note that coffee roasting happens at approximately 180 C or more, at which temperature the vapor pressure of caffeine approaches 1 bar. Despite this, there is caffeine left in the beans after roasting. This may be because the caffeine is locked up inside the beans (inside the structure of the beans). After grinding it becomes more available, but there is probably still some diffusion limitation for the caffeine to leave the coffee bean. Disclaimer: I may have made a bit of a mess of the molar/volume/weight percentages, but I'm too lazy to fix it! Note: as Enthalpy already mentioned, too much caffeine can be fatal. If you do have pure caffeine available, be very careful with it.

The REAL Reasons for all of our recent Mass Shootings
CaptainPanic replied to iNow's topic in Psychiatry and Psychology
All jokes aside (and since someone mentioned statistics), the one and only thing that all gunmen in the mass shootings had in common is that they had a gun and ammunition. -
! Moderator Note Thread re-opened because the OP claims to have improved information. Mike Smith Cosmos, please consider creating a new thread instead, where you explain the topic again. This is to avoid that we get distracted by some of the posts that caused the this thread to be (temporarily) closed. I'll leave the final decision to you.
