! Moderator Note Everyone, This thread is not progressing well, and everyone can improve the quality of their posts. If your only contribution to this thread is going to be another demand for proof, predictions or a model, then please do not post. The message has been heard, I'm sure. I went through the thread, and counted: 5 comments about length, 8 comments about proof/evidence/predictions/models, several posts which were just impatient requests for an agenda (when will you do it?), and two were personal attacks, which I will address below. A lot of posts just repeat what was already said. I can only conclude that the general lack of progress given the length of the thread (36 posts) is certainly not only due to the OP. The OP has had just 1 day so far, and one cannot reasonably expect anyone to show proofs/evidence/etc in such a short time. The relevant parameter in this case is time, not the length of the thread. Or, to put all this in different words: Everyone, stop ganging up on our OP. Elfmotat, Personal attacks are against our rules. Strange, This too can be seen as a personal attack. Stop it. Be civil. naturephysic2345, You are posting in the Speculations forum. This forum has some additional rules. A very relevant section from the rules says: If your speculation is untestable, or you don't give us evidence (or a prediction that is testable), your thread will be moved to the Trash Can. Since you (and Acme) seem to have the intention to do some tests there is no problem yet. It would be advisable however to show some progress in the posts (if there is none, sometimes it is better not to post). Do not respond to this mod note in the thread. If you have any problems with it, use the report button.

Steam at the sub-atomic level?
CaptainPanic replied to vitality00's topic in Modern and Theoretical Physics
I am not sure what the exact question is here. If you want to make steam from liquid water, you need to heat it. At a sub molecular (i.e. atomic) sub-atomic level, vibrations of the atoms relative to each other increases. Radiation (for example infrared radiation) can increase this vibration, and that means the water get hotter, or will eventually evaporate and form steam. [edit] I fixed a mistake in my own post. -
Please read our rules, and then click on the "logical fallacies" link that is provided.

! Moderator Note I am temporarily locking this thread. You guys are able to post so many rule violations so quickly that we (moderators) need a little time to evaluate this. Please be patient. In the meantime, please read our rules, and ask yourself which you have violated in this thread or any other. Thread temporarily locked.

! Moderator Note Everyone, Please focus on the contents, or stop replying. You have made your point that the texts are long. It is very undesirable that - with the exception of the OP - nobody has made a single comment that is actually on topic. You are all taking this thread off topic, and that is against the rules. In order to give naturephysic2345 a chance, I am going to enforce the rules about going off-topic a lot more in this thread. For your information, there is no rule against fluffy text, or lengthy posts. If you don't like some text, then don't read it. But if you don't read it, please do not respond either. naturephysic2345, While it is undesirable that nobody focuses on the contents, and instead write about your writing skills, you should realize that it is unlikely that you get any useful feedback if people will not read your texts because they are too long, or don't get to the point. As far as I can see you haven't violated any rules but it can sometimes be valuable to at least consider what your critics are saying. I am not saying that you must change. I leave the choice to you. I am merely trying to create a functional scientific discussion.

! Moderator Note Tim the Plumber, This thread comes across as a personal attack and is therefore against the rules. In addition, it appears that you deliberately misinterpret a post that had nothing to do with climate change, and draw that into the debate. Because the purpose of the thread seems to be a personal attack, I am shutting this down. For your information, swansont has kept a blog for centuries, and frequently writes about things that are not climate change. If you have a problem with this moderation, use the report function below this post.

! Moderator Note Tim the Plumber, Stop using logical fallacies in this discussion (or anywhere else on our forum). It is against our rules, section 2.4. This behavior starts to derail this thread, and it has been pointed out several times now by members exactly which logical fallacies you use. A continued use of fallacies will eventually have other consenquences as is also pointed out in our rules. Do not reply to this moderator note in the thread. Use the report function if you have any problems with it.

In international exchange, it is quite common to put more digits behind the dot, because when you exchange thousands of dollars into euros, these digits start to matter. So, nobody is going to price a sandwich at 1.9353 dollars, but if you look up the current exchange rate, then 1 euro will buy you 1.26339 dollars. Obviously, when you only exchange 1 euro, you get 1.26 dollar. When you exchange 10 euro, you get 12.63 dollar But when you exchange 1000000 euro, you get 1263390.00 dollar. I am not sure why they chose this particular example of 13 euro... but I guess that's just the teacher trying to make it harder? Hope this helps.

! Moderator Note I think this is a good point in this thread to remind everybody, but especially sunshaker of the rules of the Speculations forum. Especially relevant is the following sentence: If your speculation is untestable, or you don't give us evidence (or a prediction that is testable), your thread will be moved to the Trash Can. At this stage, we all understand your idea. Time to start talking how we can measure or test this. Also, please make sure to respond to people's input. Failure to do so might look like you are "preaching" or "soapboxing", which is against our rules (section 2.8).

Find the loss or gain percent on the total cost price.
CaptainPanic replied to Chikis's topic in Homework Help
When I look at your question, I get the feeling that something is missing (a profit percentage of the first car, or the cost price of both together). Could it be that there is another paragraph on another page, or something hidden somewhere else?- 1 reply

Stretch your mind - a litle bit of fun
CaptainPanic replied to mossoi's topic in Brain Teasers and Puzzles
! Moderator Note Just a quick comment: This thread will celebrate its 10th birthday in less than a month. That means this thread is practically fossilized. While it is not against our rules to reply to it, please do not expect any people from the past to reply to this. The large majority of people will not remember this thread's existence. -
cixe has been suspended for 1 week because of continuous personal attacks despite several warnings. Focus on the contents, not the people.

4.3 Sine-Wave Unification of Universe (( Inside-Outing ))
CaptainPanic replied to cixe's topic in Speculations
! Moderator Note Everyone, When you spot a personal attack, or any other rule violation, please REPORT this issue. Don't point it out in the thread because this rarely solves the problem, and will only introduce a new topic, thereby risking to take the thread off-topic. This frequently leads to petty bickering or more insults. cixe, As a result of continuous personal attacks, and after repeated warnings, you have been suspended for 1 week. Everyone, As a result of all the above, this thread will be closed. -
The reality of anomalies, compelling evidence.
CaptainPanic replied to jeremyjr's topic in Speculations
! Moderator Note No. If we would sensor it, the threads would be deleted, not just shut down. Please observe that your posts are still here for anyone to read. What we are saying is that if you don't provide anything new, we don't have to give you space on our forum. If you keep posting the same, without providing evidence, that is called "soapboxing or preaching", and we have a rule against that. Also, on the speculations forum, there are some additional rules that you must follow. You simply fail to do that. We didn't set up these rules to sensor things. We set them up to force people to follow the scientific method. Once you do have something really new, you are welcome to post again. However, you are not allowed to post anything related to these anomalies if your supportive evidence is no better than the videos you post. We've seen your videos now (and we're not even removing them - again, no sensorship), and we've concluded that this is insufficient to reach any conclusions. Since the Speculations forum clearly states that if your speculation is untestable, it will be moved to the Trash Can, this is exactly what we will do with the next thread if your evidence is just a video. For now, this thread, like the previous one, is closed. -
! Moderator Note Genecks, Please don't violate our rules. Your opening sentence (which is edited out now) violated section 2.1 of our rules. Don't reply to this moderator note in the thread. Use the report button if you have a problem with it.

I agree that the lower incomes are typically less able to absorb an extra tax or expense. As I said in an earlier post, I don't think that the Dutch water tax was really meant to reduce water by average citizens. It was just additional tax income in a time of economic crisis. That said, the large industries felt it too. And while a golf course in Las Vegas might have money to spare (do they?), industries like steel plants don't. So, as a result of this tax, these companies will first complain bitterly, and then investigate the reduction of water usage, and that means the tax works.

I also pay for the drainage (or rather for the sewage pipes and the treatment to make sure that our surface waters stay clean). I think it is completely reasonable that you pay for your own waste.

Like all the air? Where would you put the magnets?

I thought I would just add the situation in the Netherlands, for comparison. In the Netherlands (which is a wet river delta with plenty of rain), we pay: 40-80 euro/year for the connection 0.90-1.80 euro/m3 for the water For that price, the water is delicious and healthy. It is tested more thorough than bottled water, and contains sufficient minerals, and no added taste from additives (e.g. chlroine smell). (Source for prices and quality both in Dutch). A water tax of 0.33 euro/m3 was introduced in 2013. (Opposition parties in parliament still oppose the tax). It was supposed to reduce water consumption, and thereby make the country more sustainable. Personally, I think that tax was just introduced as a source of government income in a time of economic crisis. I struggled to find reliable data for the water price in California, but this source suggests it is 0.80 $ for 500 gallons, which means California water is much cheaper than in the Netherlands. I have no idea about quality there.

Currently our best method for propulsion as seen in the Iron Man movies is rocketry. Looking at amateur rockets which are typically in the size-range of an Iron Man suit, you have just a couple of seconds of propulsion before the fuel runs out, and you do not have any payload (whereas in Iron Man movies there is a human being as payload, who is probably at least 70 kg). You might want to try using jet engines instead. That's less like in the movies, but a LOT more efficient because you don't have to carry all your oxygen around. Some people use jet powered wingsuits. That is probably as close as you're gonna get to the Iron Man suit with existing technology. The best method currently available to get any time up in the air at high speeds and with some weaponry is a jet fighter. The smallest jet aircraft is (according to wikipedia) the BD-5B, which has a maximum take-off weight of over 500 kg, which is probably a little heavier than you imagine an Iron Man suit to be. Also, walking around in it is not gonna happen.

I disagree with that sentence completely, because its tone suggests you already think you know the answer. (Hint: you don't). I disagree with the first part, because Christians have fought violent religious wars too (Northern Ireland is a famous example), and Christians are also capable of atrocities - the latest example that I can think of was the Rwandan genocide, which wasn't a religious conflict (it was ethnic), but which took place in a Christian part of the world. But it is the 2nd part of the sentence that I disagree with the most: IS is mostly at war with other countries in the Middle East, fighting fellow Muslims in a violent war. The Western countries have chosen sides, and that is why we are engaged in this conflict. Contrary to what propaganda such as FOX News try to say, Western nations are not the #1 target for IS. So, I disagree that IS is at war with Western culture. They are at war with everything and everyone who are different, including the Middle Eastern culture, and probably all other cultures of the world too.

! Moderator Note This thread is closed down because it violates our forum rules, specifically rule 2.8 regarding preaching. If you wish to discuss anything regarding religions (in this case Hinduism), please open a thread in the religion forum and take note of the additional rules that apply for that forum. In general, please indicate what topic you wish to discuss, or have a question about. If you do not wish to discuss anything, you can open a blog. Thread closed.

! Moderator Note Ophiolite, Parts of your last post (especially the last question) added nothing to the conversation, and can easily be seen as insulting. Please don't post such phrases.

Ok, let me try to give an actual contribution to this thread. Why do crackpots focus on physics, and not on other fields? It may have something to do with this: Physics is the most fundamental field while still being about something tangible (albeit sometimes tangible, yet many lightyears away). Maybe that is where all the dark matter is hiding? In physics? And that's what attracts all the crackpots? That said, there are crackpots who venture into the field of obscure number tricks (e.g. draw a bunch of lines, and claim there is a deeper thing there) and are essentially going into the pseudo-maths field, and there are those who claim cars will run for free if you add some water, which is related to chemistry and conspiracy theories. So I guess there are so many crackpots in physics that they spill over on both ends of the spectrum. Some hawking radiation of the giant central crackpot, I guess... -- I am glad we are discussing crackpots, so I don't have to come up with any evidence. [edit] I am not sure that this was an 'actual contribution'.

With the rise of IS, fear of terrorism is fashionable again. Pity, really. If you want to avoid preventable deaths, focus on actual threats. Why pour billions into this, when ebola struggles to get an additional 88 million? You have to accept that 100% security from terrorists is not possible, and that it is ridiculous to pour billions into a system that may prevent several deaths (how many deaths can a suicide bomber with an implanted bomb cause? Ten? A hundred at most!). I agree with some members above that it is not a good idea to equip police with heavier weapons. Some of those weapons will inevitably fall into the wrong hands, and a person with an automatic weapon is potentially just as dangerous as a terrorist with a bomb.
