I think the most popular way is to: 1. Make gas by gasification 2. Clean the gas 3. Put that into an engine 4. Connect that to an alternator The gas cleaning is not the easiest, but depending on the engine might be totally necessary. The gas you make will contain small particles (bit like soot), heavy tars, carbon monoxide, hydrogen, CO2, water, methane, and loads of other components. If you have a robust engine, you can put it in directly... but your neighbors might not like the type of smoke that comes out the exhaust. But typically, modern engines are too finely tuned to run well with such a gas. The gas you get from gasification is far too dirty to put into a fuel cell. To be honest, you're best bet is to sell the wood as firewood.

The more posts you have, the larger the title.
This thread is not completely correct anymore, but will give a rough idea: http://www.scienceforums.net/topic/50868-what-are-the-post-count-ranks/

How Can I Make Biogas On At Home
CaptainPanic replied to chilled_fluorine's topic in Organic Chemistry
! Moderator Note To everybody, Our forum is publicly accessible: the whole internet can read this. Therefore, we prefer to warn for safety issues. Although it may seem that such a warning was aimed at an individual forum member, is always aimed at the whole internet. It's better to warn too often than to warn too little. -
! Moderator Note afungusamongus, Your last post is at best a logical fallacy, and achieved nothing for this discussion. Please either write a useful contribution to the discussion, or do not write at all on our forum. Thanks for your cooperation. Do not reply to this mod note. If you have problems with it, use the report button at the bottom left corner of this post.

I believe the universe is electric
CaptainPanic replied to EMField's topic in Astronomy and Cosmology
Aren't you two having a simple miscommunication? I think that EMField is saying that a particle requires energy to move (i.e. kinetic energy). To have no energy would mean it is at zero Kelvin, motionless. I think that MigL is saying that a particle does not require a constant input of energy (power). If it would receive a constant input of power, but wouldn't accelerate, it would violate the 1st law of thermodynamics. But I am putting words into your mouths. Anyway, please consider that you might be having a miscommunication. Try to be more clear yourself, rather than attacking the other. Also, as far as I have understood the electric universe, this theory says that it can be possible that there are also electric and magnetic forces in the universe that govern the motion of the planets, stars and galaxies, rather than only gravity. I do not know enough about it to claim one or the other, but from a layman's point of view, I think it is plausible that electricity/magnetism plays a role at the really big scales too. It seems to be present at every other scale - from atomic up to planetary scale. -
How Can I Make Biogas On At Home
CaptainPanic replied to chilled_fluorine's topic in Organic Chemistry
To do some anaerobic digestion, you first need to put all the crap in a closed container - no air can come inside. Then you'll need some piping, and possibly a stirrer. And something to do with the methane. There are off the shelf options (google for [backyard anaerobic digester], or [small scale anaerobic digester])... and some of those websites also explain how to build one. Actually, they explain it much better that I could do. I would also be curious to hear how you can "easily" make methanol from methane. I do not think that is a do-it-yourself kinda experiment. -
The way they've created a lot of maths exercises, where you can earn badges and points - I'd like to see that for chemistry and physics too. The lectures seem quite good, but personally, I only remember stuff when I practice.

It's a nice initiative, I agree. I used it too myself. I did a quick search on our forum, and we've linked to the Khan Academy at least 10 times already in various threads. Maybe they should start paying us. In all fairness, your post does sound a little bit like advertisement... anything you'd like to discuss about this?

I do not know where you guys live, but where I am, there are no wild predators larger than a fox. There is nothing (other than humans) that can take down a cow, bull, horse, or even a pig. So, all those animals would simply starve. And rot. Because there are also almost no scavengers (our forest rangers clean up dead animals, rather than letting them be eaten by scavengers).
-
Simple: 1. Set them all free. 2. Wait until they starve in winter. 3. Feed them. 4. Do essentially the same as farmers did all along.

! Moderator Note EMField, You have been warned before (here and here) not to post your theories about the charged universe in someone else's thread all the time. I have spotted your theories in at least 3 different threads now. It is not against the rules to discuss your theories, but it is against the rules to derail other threads with your own theories. If you want to discuss them, make your own thread. Do not reply to this mod note. If you have problems with it, use the report button at the bottom left corner of this post. Btw, this was your last warning.

If I google for "cyclization reaction", I get the wikipedia page, which mentions a Lewis acid catalyzed reaction as its 1st example. Is that good enough? Did you already try to search around? What did you find so far?
-
And neither do the mods. Btw, you have received a disproportionate amount of attention from us, so I really don't know what you're complaining about. Multiple mods have spend hours reading your posts, and the heated discussions you were in.

I'm a chemical engineer. And I'd like to warn that this thread is started in 2003. It is very likely that NSX (the guy who started this thread) has graduated his PhD in engineering by now. NSX has not been online on our forum since 2008.

Yes, but contrary to real-life, the scumbags that are lurking around the internet are just 1 click away from our forum. But even in real-life you have vandalism and people destroying public property, polluting the environment, and just generally not caring for their fellow people. Online, you can do something bad from behind your computer. Also in real-life, you have enforcers. Lots of them, actually! In a family, the parents enforce the rules. In schools, the teachers do it. And on the street the police enforce. In the shops/mall there are private security guys. In an office, you have a boss/manager. If you're in a civilized place, they do not have to enforce a lot, because people already know the rules. But you know how people are... as soon as the boss is not looking, they'll act differently, and work less hard. Here, on our forum, people often do not know our rules (yourself included), and we get lots of new people too. And because we (mods) like to keep the place as it is, we need to step in every now and then. A big mod-note is 1 message to everyone. You propose at least 2 messages, possibly more. I think I have mentioned this before to you, but we do not have unlimited time on our hands. The way the mods act here is a compromise between the ideal and time-efficient. Your proposals work perfectly for a family, where you can dedicate a lot of time to a few children. However, we're more like school teachers. Very little time, lots of kids. And believe me, it's actually far worse here than in a real school. More kids, less teachers, we cannot have a conversation with the parents, and the kids know they can misbehave without consequences... Some kids just like to misbehave. And that's when you need a mod.

You might want to try to use the equation(s) of uniform acceleration? Make sure to post here again if you want more help. My answer is short because it is my intention to let you do most of the work (that's our policy here in the homework section).

At uni, most of my courses ended with just 1 exam, and it was always a make or break moment. Apart from following classes and just working hard, you should prepare for the exam itself. So, see if you can get your hands on a recent test-exam (e.g. last year's exam). Make sure you understand all those questions. Practice more exams if you have more. If there was a change of teachers recently, then you should value the exams by your current teacher higher than those of a former teacher. Yes, preparing for an exam rather than just trying to understand the contents of the class is a waste of time. But unless you're gonna change the system, you have to deal with it. We all do/did.

What is the staff supposed to do with someone who is cursing, swearing, insulting and just generally being a troll on our forum? Where would you draw the line?
-
There are plenty of PhD positions where a professor already has an idea of the topic, and just needs a student to do the work. Also, it is possible to do your PhD in a company (you will still have a link with a professor at some uni, but all the work is done at a company). Companies will typically first find the money and the topic, and only then look for the student. So, although you will always have some freedom in research, there are plenty of PhD positions where you can apply without having good ideas for research yourself.
-
But I answered the question already? (here). So, what else do you want to know?
-
Yes, there are some online sources that are decent - Khan Academy (in my opinion) is quite good, and it's still growing rapidly. But such an online source will only get you to a level that you can chat with the girlfriend. Not enough for a professional career in science. Then again, in the other thread you mentioned how your income is supposed to progress (yes, I noticed you're out of a job at the moment - let's assume you fix that). If you can hit the 500k$ in a couple of years, you might as well hire someone with a PhD to teach you privately (either part-time or even full-time). PhD students get an income of 30k$ per year at uni (ballpark figure), and although they might expect an increase after they graduate, scientists don't expect to double up every other year... so this will probably be quite affordable for you. And the longer you wait, the more affordable it gets, since the income of bankers seems to increase exponentially, whereas scientists are lucky to get an increase at all. I know this sounds a little ridiculous... you come here asking for an online source, and here's someone saying you should just hire someone full-time. But I am dead serious. You as a banker can calculate a payback time. Just calculate how much you yourself cost per hour. Then calculate the costs of a tutor. And then make an estimate of how much faster you progress with someone patiently waiting by your side to teach. I bet it's worth the money. If it is important enough for you to invest 15 hrs per week for 5-6 years, you might as well do it properly.

Depends if you're having them with beer or not. I prefer beer.

Chemically? Like plants do (photosynthesis)?

I don't understand you. English is only my 2nd language, and you sometimes choose a some particular words that I don't get. In this case, I'm lost. Could you repeat it with different words, please?
-
Ok. So, you agree with Biden, but you disagree with his choice of words. Do I understand you correct?
