Sorry if I misunderstood you. Your desire for more harmony suggested to me that you think there is not sufficient harmony on earth yet.
-
Yep. Loony is the word, if you ask me. That text isn't much better than the worst crackpots we get on our lovely forum. Most will eventually get banned for using too many fallcies, or for trolling. If that text would appear on this forum, I would report it for breaking the forum rules.

But isn't any form of culture an utter waste when you regard it from the purely utilitarian point?
-
The text of that website is so retarded that just don't feel like responding. Sorry rigney, you trigger some good discussions with your posts, but this one just isn't it.

It does not need to root and grow, because it's already there. Maybe it's a more interesting thing to ask: Why do you seem to think the world is so rotten? But Severian makes an interesting point. Humans always strive to achieve more, to make things better, to improve things for themselves. This can lead to conflicts (I think it's the other way around than Severian suggests).

I think that 17 crore is about 3 million euro? It seems to me that you might be better off spending that money to build a reservoir of some kind to collect water in times of abundance, so you have some left when it is dry. On the other hand, if this keeps people happy, then it's money well spent. People spend loads of money on stuff that does not create any revenues (think of entertainment, movies, music, etc.).

I think this kind of harmony is really normal in the world. I have traveled quite a bit, and I have never seen anything other than that. I've met friendly people everywhere in the world... Friendly people are - at least in my experience - the large large majority of the people on our planet.
-
Google definition: Normal: The usual, average, or typical state or condition. Rich: Having a great deal of money or assets; wealthy. So, strictly speaking, gay people are not normal. And neither are rich. In a statistical sense <-- that needs to be stressed here. They are a small group which is not centered around an average value. Obviously, you can now accuse me and swansont of discimination against gays (and rich people), but that's just silly. swansont clearly mentioned a number of words related to statistics. You use the word normal as if opposed to stupid, dumb, or "special" or whatever. That's twisting someone else's words and a fallacy. Now, let's get back on the topic of taxes.

Meh, I disagree with the strong words of rigney and the proposal of ecoli. It was a bad day for the Olympics and for the world, but: (1) To give it so much attention also gives attention to the terrorists, and makes their attack even more successful 40 years afterwards. They want to disrupt life, so the best weapon against them is to totally ignore them. (2) It's just 11 dead athletes. Since that day, approximately 2,500,000,000 people have died worldwide. To give it so much attention degrades other atrocities in the world to being less important than these 11 athletes... to remember them at the opening ceremony (which gets billions of viewers) is really far too much. If you wanna remember something, remember the thousands of dead in the Japan earthquake/tsunami of last year, or something that is actually significant and not just emotional. (3) Come on, it's 40 years ago. Give it a rest and let's get on with life. So, in short: we already get plenty of stories about terrorism here, terrorism there... but in the end, terrorism is just a very insignificant part of life. Also, the "we shall never forget" kinda attitude is stupid and childish, and will just end in more tears when sorrow is manipulated to become anger.

Useful distillations using common chemicals.
CaptainPanic replied to chemdoc's topic in Organic Chemistry
Salt water Excellent that you started off with something harmless. Too often have I read posts of people who want to jump straight into the deep. I'm glad to read that you have experience in a lab. You will hopefully understand the possible hazards of doing this at home. Acetic acid / water Acetic acid removal from vinegar is a rather difficult distillation. You will need a multiple equilibrium separation and a reflux condenser... the boiling points of water and acetic acid are quite close to each other. Biodiesel / methanol I think biodiesel production can be relatively easy, but it does involve a reaction first. I'm not sure you want that. The distillation is the removal of methanol (which is toxic and flammable!!) from the heavy boiling biodiesel. If you look up rapeseed methyl ester, you'll find the description easily. You will need a well-ventilated room - preferably a fumehood. You can make biodiesel with ethanol too... but I believe that it is a little harder to achieve the full reaction conversion. Not entirely sure about that though. Ethanol / water That's booze. Start off with beer or wine, and distill it into something stronger. If it's just for fun, pretty much your only hazard is the fire hazard (ethanol can burn!). If you want to drink it, study other sources. Stuff can go wrong. That's all the inspiration I have now. Be careful. -
Yes, but the reaction is between oxygen and iron, in the presence of water or moisture from the air. Also, rust is ironoxide (either FeO or Fe2O3 or a mix of those two).

! Moderator Note alpha2cen, this has gone far enough now. I have suspended you for 3 days for writing continuous thread hijacking with off-topic nonsense. For the record, this was not just my decision. Multiple staff members agreed. [edit] And also, it was not just for this thread. This has been going on for much longer, and you had been warned several times before. Everyone else, please carry on, there's nothing to see here.

After a discussion among the staff, we have decided to give alpha2cen a 3-day suspension for continuous thread hijacking with off-topic nonsense.

Need guidance on where to find Electromagnetic Engineers
CaptainPanic replied to Invader954's topic in Engineering
Alternatively, you could go straight to a university and post a job offer there, or go to a technical job fair for engineers. Finally, make sure you have the job offer on a company website, in addition with some specific info. Google will find it, and your future employee will find it. -
In order to define what's lazy and what is not you need to look at how fast something proceeds. That has a factor of time in it. Before the Big Bang, we think there was no time (although this is hotly debated on our forum). My point is that since we either say that time started at the Big Bang, or there may have been an infinite amount of time prior to the Big Bang, the only conclusion can be that the Big Bang was possibly the laziest thing ever. According to one theory, nature had to invent time to get it to move. How is that not lazy? According to the other, nature waited an infinite amount of time before the Big Bang. If you arrive infinitely late at work, you're really lazy. (Please do not take this reply too serious - it's probably so wrong that you would have to write several pages of text to explain all my mistakes) I agree. And I made it worse. Sorry.

The page cannot be found (the movie works, but at the end of that movie, they give a link which fails) First thing to do would be to check the texts quoted in that movie to the actual text, but I get a 404 Not Found when I try the address that the movie mentions at the end. The only source quoted does not work. I then quickly went online, searched for things like "government healthcare plan" (which is what the movie calls it), and similar searches, and found several official documents (large .pdfs) that could be the right one... but none of them contained the quoted texts. So... I dunno. Is any of this true at all? Does any of this make sense without the context in which it is placed in the real document? My first impression is that this is overly dramatized. Stupid music sounds like someone just died... so that doesn't make me think that the message is completely objective either. [edit] Then again, I am a soclialist Dutchman - what do I know of healthcare plans...

If you put table salt (which is NaCl) in an iron salt dispenser, nothing will happen. If NaCl were that reactive, then your normal table salt that you buy in the supermarket would have enormous warning stickers.

Slowlearner, There are 2 reasons why you didn't get an answer to this question yet: 1. It is really difficult to calculate. I know how to do these kinds of calculations, but for me it goes too far to do this for a hobby on the forum... it would take too long, and my answer might still be wrong. If you want to learn more about it, some useful keywords are "free convection", which is also called "natural convection". 2. The explanation of the pipes is not 100% clear. We need a better (but more simple!) picture. There is no need to make the picture in 3D. Just a 2D explanation is probably enough.

Victims influence charges that DA will pursue
CaptainPanic replied to CaptainPanic's topic in Politics
Don't get me wrong. I don't think it's weird that in this particular case, the highest penalty is wanted by the prosecutor. I just don't understand that the victims are publicly involved. It makes it all sound like a trial and punishment are mainly revenge. -
That sounds confusing (even to me, but I get it). What swansont says is that unit conversion shouldn't change the actual speed you're doing... just the number and the unit. If you were doing 100 km/hr (100 km/s = 360,000 km/hr, which is only for physics scientists, normal people do 100 km/h), then if you sit in your car, and you convert it to a different unit, it wouldn't feel any different, because it is not different. p.s. I dislike any non-real-world calculations for educational purposes. If you can teach kids unit conversions, why not teach them a feeling for realistic everyday values for velocity too? So, if I were a teacher, I'd always use normal velocities that pedestrians, cars or airplanes can achieve. 100 km/s is high even for a spacecraft, but 100 km/h is a normal highway speed. Even the spacecraft Voyager 1 and 2 only reach about 17 km/s relative to the sun... but this is going off topic.

If you could be God for a while what would your first acts be?
CaptainPanic replied to Alan McDougall's topic in Religion
I'd show the people that I exist. Say hello or something. -
Iota, 1 hour = 3600 seconds. 40 km/h = 24.84 miles / hour, because 40 km = 24.84 miles 24.84 miles / hour = 24.84 miles / 3600 seconds, because 1 hour = 3600 seconds. ... and 24.84 miles/ 3600 seconds = 0.006904 miles / second Alternatively, you can do it the other way around too: first the time units, then the distance. 40 km/h = 40 km / 3600 seconds = 0.01111 km/s 0.01111 km/s = 0.006904 miles/second

Yeah, that's more like what I had. Displacement?? I don't know... I guess "displacement" could be a distance (the S you have). Not sure though... I have never really heard that word for that, but I am not a native English speaker. Speed is the same as velocity.
