  1. Ok, so being in the military makes the kids more obedient, and perhaps teaches them to take some responsibility. They learn to work with the system, not against it... but that's not moral/ethics... that's just growing up. I would actually suggest that following orders is the exact opposite from morals and ethics. But when you're in the military, you have little choice but to follow orders. Regarding my use of the word propaganda: I know it's very common in the USA to see movies/documentaries/series about the military (and the US tv programs are also aired in Europe, so I am familiar with them). What is perhaps strange is that I know more about the US army/navy/airforce than about any European armies, including the one from my own country (Netherlands). Strange, isn't it? After all, the Dutch are also present in the wars where the Americans are fighting. We also have a navy, an army, and an airforce. But there is no tv show about it. We don't show off. The simple reason I know so much about the US's military is because the USA makes a huge effort to tell the world how strong it is. It's quite important for the USA that everybody knows that they are the strongest... that prevents a lot of conflicts. It is information deliberately spread to influence opinions. And that's propaganda. Search carefully, and you can find more. And still more. The US military cooperates (and even sponsors) tv shows that show the military in a positive way, and refuse any cooperation when it is negative. Although this is very logical from a strategic point of view, that means they deliberately want the world to be presented with a biased picture. When a company does it, it's called an advertisement. When a state does that, that's propaganda. And the easiest way to do that is by inviting the Discovery Channel, who will be "factual", but always in a positive way. (Your challenge for today: Find a documentary by the Discovery Channel which is critical or negative about the US military). Also interesting is the list of movies which got support from the Pentagon, and which didn't. I hope this explains why I call that movie "propaganda". It's not a stand-alone incident. It's part of a huge Pentagon-sponsored information machine.
  2. Sure! If you show us what you already did, and that you made some effort, then I am sure someone will help.
  3. I think it's such a pity that the Discovery Channel lends itself for this kind of propaganda. I remember when it was an informative channel. It's a long time ago... rigney, I fail to see how this movie, or the text you write has anything to do with morals/ethics. Could you explain that? And could you also provide anything to discuss? This kind of propaganda movies leave no room for discussion. You either like it, or you don't. I don't.
  4. ! Moderator Note pengkuan, Please do not use our forum as a way to advertise your own blog. Our forum rules clearly say what is allowed and what not. Please read the rules, section 2, subsection 7. I've removed the links from the text, and I kindly request you to modify your signature as well, and make the fonts a little smaller. If you like, you can keep the link there. Do not reply to this mod-tip.
  5. Did you try to look on the internet? Google? Wikipedia? I just did, and I found the answer within 1 minute. I'm sure you can search too. It helps to add "wiki" as a keyword in google, to get the wikipedia page. Also, look for "production", "manufacture" or "process"... Homework section is all about learning you to fish, not about giving you the fish.
  6. I enjoy sixty symbols. Also, wimp is a website that does the searching for you. They are far from 100% science-related, but will show science-related items, as well as other entertaining videos.
  7. Make it a cylinder, not a cuboid. There is a reason that all pressure vessels are always cylinders or spheres.
  8. If your boss does not want you to visit certain websites, then I recommend that you don't. If you need a certain website for work, and you find it's blocked, then I am sure someone can unblock it for you.
  9. How would you test this? How do you explain that our universe seems to expand, and to actually accelerate? If expansion would have to stop at some point, and contraction should start, then acceleration is the last thing you'd expect. Any comments?
  10. ROFL! I guess it was already april fools day when you posted this? I oppose ANY additional logos. You already have an avatar and a signature. In addition, the size limit you propose is completely ridiculous. A banner of 150x2000 pixels would occupy so much of my screen that the Occupy Movement would be proud of you. I guess you would like to make it an animated .gif too? Or, no, better... use flash! And make it a link to some external website. Viagra anyone? Just couldn't take that serious... sorry if you were.
  11. ! Moderator Note Green Xenon, A lot of your posts are based on a personal hatred or a personal bias. Then you use that as an explanation for some actions. There is no discussion possible with such posts, because we cannot change your bias. That means it is pure soapboxing / preaching, and that is against the rules. It stops now. Also, I have removed your link to the other forum. Discussion on other forums belong on other forums. Do not respond to this message.
  12. I second Cap'n Refsmmat's post. I enjoy this forum because it's layout is nice and calm, which allows to to immediately focus on the contents.
  13. Well, solar cells can convert light into electricity. As far as I know, they are the only commercial application that does this efficiently. But I don't think it's efficient enough for your idea. Note that ordinary laser pointers have very low power (as little as 5 mW). Also note that your conversion from electricity to light, and back to electricity will come with significant losses... you will probably lose at least 80% of the energy in the process.
  14. That would definitely be useful. But if you are gonna learn some programming outside your school-program, make sure to have fun while you learn. I can't really give advice which language would be best... c++ perhaps, as you proposed yourself. Many people will also advise you Python. I think python is a little friendlier for new people.
  15. What is "Alcohol Print"? Interestingly, a Google search for Alcohol print shows this forum page (yes, the one you're reading now), which suggests that not a whole lot of information about "alcohol print" exists...
  16. You don't know that. He could have written a Holy Book of Green Xenon already... and it would be just as valid as "scientific evidence" as any other Holy book in this thread (apologies to all different religions, but that's my view).
  17. The problem with religious discussions is: if you believe different things, there is no discussion. - We already established that Green Xenon has his own personal beliefs. - You suggest that immortal is of a different religion than you - I try to speak for mainstream Christianity (if there is such a thing... I'm still no expert, and an atheist normally) - You might be of yet another branch If all four of us have different assumptions on even what God is supposed to do, and about what's written in the Bible... how the hell are we ever going to have a discussion? It's not like you're gonna convince people with beliefs. If you say: "I believe this-and-this", then I will just shrug, and say: "Ok, good for you". End of discussion. That's about as far as we got here in 12 posts. And that's my problem with this whole thread, and in general also with the religion forum here on SFN. We're talking about beliefs! Normally, it's a single religious person vs. a bunch of scientists. Now in this thread, we have multiple religions against each other, and so far the scientists are observing from the sideline... (no doubt waiting until someone mentions "creationism", which is the Godwin of religious discussions). But there is absolutely no way we can convince Green Xenon that his God is not evil. And there is no reason to do that either... So, this whole thread is a bit pointless.
  18. ! Moderator Note Your pictures are obviously questions from a textbook for your study, so this is homework. Topic moved. Also, it is our general policy to only help with homework if you show what you tried to solve this yourself. You're not getting free answers here.
  19. Obviously, not everything should be red. But some othger things should also be red. still, it's a good question... and it made me think for a while. I understand and agree with the explanation of RichIsnang... but I fail to find any pictures or movies to support it (other than the time lapse of the lunar eclipse itself). And that seems weird. It would make sense that every orbit satellites should go through a zone where they should be colored red because of the same phenomenon, before they go into the real shadow of the earth. That makes sense. After all, most satellites go through an "eclipse" every orbit (they go from sunlight into the earth's shadow). I always thought that the lunar eclipse turned red for the same reason that twilight on earth looks red. Looking at a , you can also notice that the moon, like twilight, goes through a transition of yellowish, to orange, to red, to even darker red... And the further the moon moves into the shadow behind the earth, the darker the color. But it is a little puzzling to me too why I cannot find a decent movie of twilight in orbit. This movie shows that it's dark for a very long time, then blue for a while, then red-orange-yellow for a very short moment, before going into full sunlight. The blue confuses me. So far, the only good "twilight from orbit" that I found is this one. In that movie, the sun looks pretty yellow/orange... but as soon as it's below the horizon, the red layers are just as bright as the blue. And a little later, at the sunrise, the red seems missing altogether.
  20. Nobody believes in the scientific method, but it's still very useful. It's a tool, not a belief. It's like any other tool. There is no point in "believing" in hammers as a tool to push nails into wood. You can, if you like, but it's pointless. Hammers exist. And they are useful. The scientific method allows us to test theories, and use those theories that we tested to predict other phenomena. It is very useful.
  21. It's still not clear to me what you're trying to achieve with this thread. It still seems to me that the main point of this thread was to insult. So far in this thread, the only "discussion" we had was just a misunderstanding. I thought you were discussing the standard views of Christianity, but you're not. But now that's cleared up, there is nothing left to talk about... Because we're dealing with your personal beliefs, and you are the only one who knows those. So... ? Are you just preaching your own beliefs (take not of forum rule 2.8 before you do that), or was there something you'd like to discuss? [edit] Ah, I see that hypervalent_iodine just beat me to making a similar comment...
  22. Everybody is free to choose to do something good. It helps if we have leaders to who give a good example, or who facilitate doing good... but even under the worst circumstances, people can still do good. I disagree that we cannot do any good ourselves (this reply is from a common-sense-point-of-view, not religious). The 10 commandments seem to suggest a lot more good than evil?
  23. Right. So, we have established that this is your own personal belief. Why do you choose to use the same words (God, angels, devil, etc.) as Christianity, if your belief is clearly different from theirs?
  24. The courses you suggest seem fine to me. Later, consider to either enroll into a kind of medical school, or get educated in IT. And then you can specialize later into the other field. Specialization takes time.
  25. Was there anything you wanted to discuss in particular, or did you just feel like insulting religion? I have many problems with your post, but I will highlight two: I'm not an expert in religion, but weren't humans put on earth in order to prove ourselves worthy? You need some suffering to be able to do good. If all good is already taken care of, then there would be little point in going to heaven. So, we should heal that SDD (suffering, destruction, death) ourselves? (I put a questionmark, because once again, I am no expert in religion). Correct me if I am wrong, but I think religion encourages people to do good, instead of promising people that some higher being will take care of everything. Ok, so you believe that. So what? You haven't backed it up with any quotes from the bible or any other religious literature (which I assume we must use as input, to talk about God?). You might be all alone believing this. Unfortunately, you build the rest of your post on the foundation of this empty argument. Which makes the rest of your post nothing but an angry rant. I know we often give religious people a hard time on this forum, but we base that on logical arguments, not angry rants.
