The really short summary of that is: If God really wants to save everybody, then nobody goes to hell, and hell is either empty or doesn't even exist. I'm not an expert, but isn't the point of nearly every religion to distinuish between right and wrong, and to promise good for those who do good, and bad for those who do bad? If you allow everybody to eventually go to heaven, what incentive do you give the religious people to live a good life, if they end up in heaven for eternity anyway?

I am not sure if eyelash length is purely genetic, or if there are other factors such as the diet, or other forms of healthcare. But assuming it is genetic, then it is possible for a genetic trait to skip a generation. In that case it might be interesting to know the length of the eyelashes of the 4 grandparents too.

It is the official story that (1) Osama is dead and (2) his body was left at sea. Under Bush's Patriot Act of 2001 it is not allowed to disagree with official government lies. Those who disagree are probably terrorists or communists themselves. You aren't siding with the terrorists or the communists, are you? Are you?

You can also just ask your roommate to limit his own up/download speeds (some/most torrent programs are capable of setting a certain limit for that). Why would you search for a solution if it's actually your roommate's problem to solve it, because he caused it in the first place?

lighter than air ship using vacuum instead of gas

What purpose would this have? Normally, cargo is at the surface of the earth, and has to go somewhere else on the surface of the earth. -
I hope this doesn't sound rude... but no, he probably cannot put it in an orderly form because you didn't ask an orderly question. Your list really does require almost all types of science and engineering - and it's impossible to put any order into it. But you can Google (wikipedia) all the individual types of engineering to find out more about them.

Iconic or ionic? An ionic compound is made up of ions (i.e. a salt). I've never heard of an iconic compound... (but then again, I'm a chemical engineer, not a chemistry teacher).

Why is it bad to have a gridlock in politics? The fact that politicians can change a country/economy very quickly is part of the problem, not part of the solution.

Meh... one more stupid health-related research. Instead of saying what is not healthy, can't some researchers please tell me what actually IS healthy? Almost all food at some point has been in the news for being either carcinogenic, toxic, polluted, bad for the environment, bad for poor people in 3rd world countries, bad for my diet, etc. And if the food itself wasn't the problem, then it is the production method (e.g. animals being fed dangerous feed) or the preparation method (charred food, like from a BBQ is carcinogenic too). Just Google 'carcinogenic food', and this pops up: 1. Any charred food - from burnt popcorn - to burnt toast, is highly carcinogenic. 2. Meat in general (in terms of the fats associated) is carcinogenic, especially overcooked meat. 3. Sugar is carcinogenic - whether white or brown. Instead of sugar, substitute honey 4. Stomach cancer is associated with high salt intake, with spicy foods and smoked food 5. Sodas are carcinogenic for a variety of reasons beyond their high sugar content and harmful additives. Sodas have also been proved to leach the minerals - principally calcium - that are temporarily gained through other healthier foods 6. Trans fats found in fries and snack chips are carcinogenic 7. Artificial sweeteners, particularly aspartame, are carcingogenic 8. Excessive alcohol intake is toxic 9. Foods cooked at high temperatures usually contain acrylamide. 10. Farm-raised fish and fish products contain high amounts of PCB's. And then when you think: "Hey, cheese isn't on this list", I googled it. First hit claims that cheese can lower the risk for cancer. 3rd hit claims it might actually increase it. And veggies are full of poisons like herbicides and pesticides, so that's no good either. That doesn't actually leave a lot of things that are safe. Even the bloody air we breathe is carcinogenic, and getting worse every day. The sun's rays are bad too (although too little is also bad). Personally, I would rather live to reach only 70, and not worry about all this than to be 100 and worry about everything every day... especially given the fact that it's all statistics, and I might just get lucky and get to be a 100 anyway. Sorry for being rather off-topic. It's Monday morning, and this seemed like a good thread to vent some frustration.

TATA Nano? Apparently it's on sale for around 1500 euro in India. In Europe, due to stricter regulations, the cheapest version is on sale for about 4000 euro or something. Does this answer the question?

http://math.about.com/library/weekly/aa040502a.htm There are rules for that. But anyone who writes it down so that it can be interpreted in two different ways deserves a spanking.

So, how many lanes does the brid(g)e have, can the jet cars fly, what color are they, and what is the name of the driver of the first jet car that arrives at the bridge?
-
Oh, wait... it said bride, not bridge? Only today would that perhaps not be a typo. Meh, I don't get the joke (if there is one).

Don't worry about the financial situation of the politicians. The lobby of something will pay for their expenses. And if it doesn't pay them directly, they will be promised some lucrative job after they quit their politicians' job. I can imagine a law to reduce some pollution, which would cost some industry a lot of money. They will spend a few million on a lobby... you can then bet on it that a minority will block that law indefinitely if they get a chance... and somehow, the politicians blocking it will find work in that industry or related corporations or institutes.
-
I think it depends on the speed limit on the bridge. Jet cars tend to stick to the speed limit. At the same time, I wonder why a jet car would need a bridge. Just attach wings to it and fly across.

Any torrent client will do? Note that it may be illegal in your country to download or upload. Many clients also upload the music you just downloaded (actually while you download). In some countries, uploading is illegal, but downloading is not. It's not always possible to turn off the upload (depends on the client). With the iTunes store as a cashcow for Apple, I really doubt that there is a lot of many Mac software allowing free music downloads.

@Lyndale, Please stop using bold font for your entire post. You're reaching the exact opposite effect of what you want to do, like people who use caps all the time. Instead of making sure that people read it, people actually skip such posts. Anyway... looks pretty dry for a garden... or is that just me? And I agree with everyone that it's an artificial lake... if this dam would burst, the water level would drop, and the shorelines would change.

You have to consider whether the weight of your apparatus scales linearly with volume, or with surface area of the displacement volume that you want. If it scales linearly with the surface area of the volume of the "vacuum balloon", then you only have to make it bigger to reach a point where your balloon can lift the apparatus. -
We've already reached that point many years ago. The development however is not to go from n Hz to (n+1) Hz. We go from n Hz to 2n Hz. I'm not sure if there actually is a theoretical upper limit.

This is good advice. I just wanted to say I completely agree!

I would do nothing different. My chemical engineering degree prepared me very well for the working life. I always made sure to understand the topics I was studying, rather than just memorizing the books. I actually did some studying abroad (I really recommend that!). I had a healthy combination of studying and social life ('social networking'), and also worked a bit for the equivalent of the faculty's student union at times. I always made sure to travel in summertime to 'broaden my horizon'. And usually had a parttime job to pay for my holidays and/or other expenses.

Yes. Just like you can treat "2 eggs" as one term, or "two bananas", "two dollars", or "two hours". You don't just have "two". You have to specify "two what?".

What to do when you feel like you've wasted your life
CaptainPanic replied to psi20's topic in The Lounge
Well... that kind of attitude also goes for certain kinds of criminals. In real life, you are responsible for the decisions you take. But it's never too late to change, and if no harm was done in the past, you can safely let it rest. And I completely agree with almost all posts here: college is just the start, and you have the world at your feet. You have (nearly) all choices still open. -
I still think it's outrageous that the USA has created a 3rd category of people. Next to military and civilians, there are now 'enemy combatants' for which the USA made up completely new rules, thereby avoiding existing treaties which were put in place to protect the rights of all people. And we all (including Europe) accepted it.

Let's assume that you are interested in the more exact forms of science (in other words, you do not wish to switch your career into, for example, behavioral studies or medicine)... then I would suggest that mathematical knowledge is always extremely important, and therefore the world will be your playground. By choosing maths, I would suggest that you actually have kept a lot of options open... you probably just don't know how many. So, you haven't wasted any opportunities, you only neglected to look over the horizon. A faculty of maths might perhaps be a little conservative in its career suggestions to its students.
