I ran across this from a guy on facebook and he gave me permission to use it freely. I thought you guys might like it. _________________________________________________________________________________________________ I propose a simple poker game where all the players receive 5 cards from a randomly shufffled deck. Then each player shows his cards and the highest ranking had wins. After 1000 games, who ends up with the most wins? The answer is on the average noone, because the cards were random. Now lets play another 1000 games, but after each card is dealt, lets let one player discard up to five cards each of which are replaced by cards from the top of the randomly shuffled deck. He can discard and draw the five cards one at a time, and each time he can choose which card, if any, he wants to discard. That particular player has the discard privelege throughout all the 1000 games. Who do you think will win the most game. This last example demonstrates the power of a process of selection following random events. Now, lets let all the players have the discard privilege and suppose they do it in turns, one card at a time. But now lets let one player have the special privilege of keeping his hand between games, while the rest of the players have to start each game with a new hand. After 1000 games who do you think will win the most? In fact, how many games will it take for the privileged guy to build a Royal Flush and keep it for the rest of the games? This demonstrates the power of randomness, followed by a selection process, followed by inheritence. The selection process makes the best it can out of the random process, and the inheritence allows the improvements to accumulate from game to game.

The conflict is undisputed. Peter was the rock upon which Jesus said the Church was to be built. Paul was a Christian Persecutor. Peter was present for Jesus's teachings. Paul wasn't. In fact, Jesus quite explicitly teaches several times that works are absolutely necessary to enter the Kingdom. Disagreement on such a vital theological point alone should be enough to cast Paul away as a heretic. Now, the paper in the OP presents what appears to be a completely plausible explanation of Paul's embarrassing illness AND the disparity between his teaching and those of Jesus. The paper sure gets points for explanatory elegance.

Paul's teachings are completely different than that of Jesus. It is so different that Paul doesn't even seem to know what they are. Nor does he quote Jesus. On the issue of works, Paul even disagrees with Peter(the Rock upon which the Church was to be built) who quotes Jesus in the debate. Paul describes one such confrontation, but does not say who won the argument that day. For the confrontation Paul described see Galations 2:11-17. However, I'll type out some passages from texts you probably don't have to give you a fuller sense of their relationship. "For some among the gentiles have rejected my lawful preaching and have preferred a lawless and absurd doctrine of the man who is my enemy. And indeed some have attempted, while I am still alive, to distort my word by interpretations on many sorts, as if I taught the dissolution of the Law...But that may God forbid! For to do such a thing means to act contrary to the Law of God which was made to Moses and was confirmed by our Lord in its everlating continuance. For He said, 'The heavens and earth will pass away, but not one jot or tittle shall pass away from the Law.'"-Letter of Peter to James 2:3-5 "And if our Jesus appeared to you and became known in a vision and met you as angry and an enemy, yet he has spoken only through visions and dreams or through external revelations. No, they are quite different. This is a fact. Paul even describes some difficulty with the disciples and that one actually made it into the Bible. We also have Peter describing Paul as an enemy and a heretic. You know, Peter, the rock on which Jesus said the Church was to be founded? We've had this discussion elsewhere on the site.

They would be incorrect. Morality can be summed up as what we 'ought' to do. Some people like to dwell on the problem of not being able to derive an 'ought' from an 'is', but I don't actually see it as a problem. We may not be able to derive an ought from an is, but we can derive an "ought, if" from an "is". It is merely a matter of observing the conditions and determining the necessary course to meet the desired outcome. We are social animal, and as such, benefit from peace(at the least within our tribe). If we want an effective society, we ought foster peace. People do respect others more when they are given respect. If you want to be respected, you ought respect others. etc
