I think this may have already been pointed out but there are diagnosis’s where someone has bipolar disorder and they are said to display schizophrenic symptoms. I can easily see someone misinterpreting this to mean that they have schizophrenia.

I believe this principle to be false. You will find many examples of two species that compete over the same niche and each survives for millions of years. What is to stop humans and evolved apes from cohabiting in cities? What's to prevent apes from evolving human-level intelligence if we allow them to have the resources and let natural selection to do its magic? What makes that principle have a particle of truth is the word identical. Of course two individuals of the same species or of two different species cannot occupy the same spot nor can they eat the exact same crumb of food.

This is a thread to discuss potential ways to increase intelligence or brainpower. Discuss.

This is just spam.

Both Man's survival is dependent upon a certain amount of mutual respect for each other and for mankind as a whole. Any society that whishes to produce an environment where its people can be happy and therefore prosper must cherish the notion that each individual is deserving of certain rights. Among these rights must be included freedom and the right to pursue happiness. If we create a hybrid man/chimpanzee we have knowingly created an individual that will likely be retarded, physically repulsive, and ostracized by society. We have purposely created someone that will never know peace and have removed his right to happiness before he is even born. By keeping him constantly under observation so that we might advance science and perform our experiments on him we have taken away his freedom. In this scenario we have completely ignored the rights of the individual and forgotten what truly makes us human. If we did do this experiment then I think that the most telling information we learn will not be about the specifics of the hybridization but rather an important example of how man can commit atrocities by not respecting the rights of each individual. I can't see creating any hybrid as ethical because all human hybrids would be inferior. Of course I'm not talking about genetic engineering where you could take pieces of genetic code from other animals and potentially create an improved human. When I say hybrid I am thinking of a 50/50 deal. Or if you intended to destroy the fetus before birth then I guess that would be ok.

For the physics part of the course I suggest checking out a book called Thinking Physics by Lewis Carroll Epstein.

Tyranosaurus and chickens--missing link
LucidDreamer replied to Martin's topic in Evolution, Morphology and Exobiology
A slight twist on the subject that's just as plausable' date=' but it all boils down to the same thing. Gliding creatures evolved from leaping creatures, and flying creatures evolved from gliding creatures. Ya, I talk about evolution that way too sometimes. I forget that there are people out there who are not familiar with evolutionary theory. -
fruit (blueberries and bananas), veggies (broccoli and carrots), fish (salmon and tuna) lots of water, 8 hours of sleep, multi vitamin, Vit C, B and E. Foods with olive oil instead of saturated fat. Nuts. You might try Ginkou biloba, but I won't necessarily recommend it. There is also a way to cheat if really ever need to-a b12 shot is powerful stuff. It's more of an energy boost than anything but it has an amazing temporary effect on alot of people. Caffeine only improves a tired mind. This is off topic and I don't know if you would be interested but it seems like there are several people on this forum who are looking for ways to boost their brainpower. This is kind of an area of interest for me so ill tell you one thing I know that is fast and very productive at increasing your brainpower. Practice using your mental eye. When you study something visualize it in great detail. Visualize each of the individual components and visualize how they all work together. When you think about photosynthesis think about the all of the components involved. Imagine leaves of the tree interacting with light. See the photons of light striking the chemical molecules and see how the electron becomes excited. Imagine the electron being passes from molecule to molecule of the photosystem until it reaches its destination. Constantly practice at improving your powers of visualization until it becomes a habit to see things in great detail. If you do this you will not be disappointed at the results. Sorry, if that’s too off topic.

I believe that creating a Humanzee would be highly unethical. Humans or human hybrids should never be created solely for experimentation. But it would be a very interesting experiment.

I am sure that some species of amphibians have gone extent and more will go extent soon, but I don't think that all of the amphibians will go extenct. They have survived previous extinctions and they will probably survive this one.

Tyranosaurus and chickens--missing link
LucidDreamer replied to Martin's topic in Evolution, Morphology and Exobiology
opps, I forgot about insects, but I think they pretty much followed the same path though. Instead of gliding from tree to tree they glided from plant to plant. Its interesting that both feathers and insect wings are thought to have evolved from thermoregulation devices. Is there some subtle significance to that? Mokele, have we found other fossils of proto-feathers besides just this tyrannosaurid? If we have and we can confirm their that they are indeed proto-feathers than I imagine proto-feathers probably evolved before any kind of gliding and then they were adapted after gliding began. -
coquina, you always have great posts!

I read the article and I am a little skeptical of it. The motor claims to create more energy than it uses. This seems like a violation of the laws of physics but remember permanent magnets have a form of stored energy so it doesn't really create more energy than it makes when you factor that in. What seems strange is that the motor tripled the amount of wattage that was put in. How is this possible? . http://www.gizmodo.com/archives/magic-motor-makes-me-a-mook-015104.php http://freeenergynews.com/Directory/MagneticMotors/ If he has really created an efficient motor than it would only run much more efficiently on less power and create less heat at best. Its not going to produce more energy than it takes in.

If I knew exactly what these cards were then I could tell you. If they just combine all of your current ID cards into one then so be as far as I'm concerned. If they are a form of documentation to record who enters the country and then record their employment history then again I say this is a good idea. If this card is going to be used to make a huge database of all of our personal information then I say its an invasion of privacy. If this card is to be used to track our locations at all times then again I say its an invasion of privacy. If citizens are going to be constantly called upon to produce their cards by the police then I say its an invasion of privacy as well. I can tell you why when I know what we are talking about.

I highly doubt it. The upright posture was an adaptation resulting from the pressures of changing from a tree-climbing primate to a faster bipedal land animal. If you get anything out of this thread it should be that hallucinogenic drugs probably had little effect on the evolution of man. Any effects at all would be minimal and would have little to do with morphology.

I think they should have just cut jar jar out completely and got a different actor to play the adult Anikin (sp?). Just these two changes would have made Star Wars 1 and 2 much better.

I just finished watching the Farscape mini-series finale and it was amazing. Some of the early Farscapes were poor but as the series approached its finale I felt like it became one of the best sci-fi series ever made.

My god, he tore them to pieces. That was wonderful. You can. But you can't on major network television.

Certainly the monitoring can serve useful purposes and some of it can be considered benign. In fact it is for these useful purposes that the laws are able to pass. However, the monitoring and the information that is collected ends up being abused. When I go to get my driver's license in Texas I am required to fill out a questionnaire with personal information. This information is then sold to commercial organizations. My own government makes me give personal information about myself so that they can sell it. This is clearly a violation of my privacy. A national database filled with a massive amount of information about people would be so utterly abused that any benefits would pale in comparison. But after the laws pass and the organization is created it will be nearly impossible to get rid of. But then again, is this what we are talking about when we talk about an identity card? There seems to be no specifics on exactly what this card will be and its intended purpose.

Nixon got in so much trouble from Watergate that he was thrown out of office (resigned). Clinton was almost thrown out for sleeping with an intern. We know specific details about the politicians’ lives and their public policies. I doubt the federal government could get away with all that is attributed to them in this conspiracy theory. Also, although I often feel our politicians are somewhat corrupt and dishonest I do not think that most of them are so low that they would work with terrorist to squeeze a little power out of us.
