You should stop living in a cave and go out and meet some people. (just kidding, I'm a blond too.)

Blike has mentioned a key paradox with the anti-animal research argument. If animals are equal to human beings then we have no responsibility to protect them because they do not protect us or each other (one species to another that is). If we have a responsibility to protect them because we know better then we are different. So in that case our lives are worth more. How can we be equal yet at the same time be held to higher standards of conduct? BTW, I am fairly certain that rats, like all mammals, have emotional responses. They cannot, however, ever understand the meaning of their suffering, nor is their suffering as complex as a human's suffering. Also I am assuming that you are a vegan and that you wear all non-animal clothing. Otherwise you are just as guilty as any researcher. And another thing if we are going to consider all living things equal and consider it cruel to research on animals or eat them then why is it ok to eat vegetables? Certainly a broccoli would be much happier in the ground then in someone’s stomach. If its not ok to devalue a rat because it has a much smaller nervous system then why is it ok to devalue a plant because it has no nervous system at all?

1) Make sure you sanitize all your equipment. You don't want anything alive except the yeast 2) Make sure you get rid of allof the residual chemical that you used to sanitize the equipment. 3) Make sure that your yeast is alive by testing it with some water and sugar. 4) Make sure you create an anaerobic environment. 5) Boil the sugar in water that you put in the bottles. 6) Use malt sugar in the fermentation process 7) The amount of time that it takes to brew may vary. An accurate method of determining when the brew is done is to count the amount of CO2 bubbles escaping from the fermentation device. 8) Use quality ingredients. 9) Most of the expense involved comes from the initial investment in equipment. After the first time home-made beer can be somewhat economical. 10) Your results will likely be radically different for each batch that you make when you first start so don't be discouraged if your trial run isn't that tasty Most important things to get a good result. Sanitize all equipment. Boil ingredients. Don't ferment for too long. Use a good recipe.

How about: 1) Don't know, hasn't happened yet. 2) If you’re a blond then you could answer: I don't know; I forgot.

There has been alot of research done that indicates that memory is subjective. If one person strongly insists that an event occurred one way then another person is more likely to report that it occurred the same way. Later when there is no pressure on the person to report it either way they will still claim that it happened the way the other person insisted.

Yes, its unlikely that you will get a response. That was just a cut and paste job from a creationist that knows little of science that was impressed by how scientific the article sounded. But what do we know; we are only evolutionists deceived by Satan.

No wonder those guys survived when the dinosaurs died out. HIbernation is a built in catastrophe resistance mechanism along with its other uses.

Ya, any effects on evolution from hallucinogenic drugs would be very small I think. But you do see what I am saying about an indirect effect don't you? As an example take trade. Trade would have been an immensely valuable resource for pre-sapiens hominids. Any person that could communicate effectively and trade well would be more likely to survive. Any shaman or individual that could repeatedly take the hallucinogenic drugs at the primitive religious gatherings and not be permanently adversely affected would be more likely to survive. So you could say that the discovery and use of hallucinogenic drugs affected genetic evolution.

How about a frog. If you don't have to use an amphibian then how about a turtle.

Although it’s a fascinating topic, I seriously doubt that hallucinogenic drugs have had much of an impact on evolution directly. First of all, any changes in mental functions due to a hallucinogenic drug would be limited to the individual taking the drug and it would not be passed down through the genes. Also, although hallucinogenic drugs can have some interesting effects, most of the effects would be harmful in the long run, except perhaps on creativity. Ophiolite brought up an interesting point about a possible indirect relationship caused by hallucinogenic effects on the cultural evolution and in turn its effect on physical evolution. I certainly think its possible that hallucinogenic drugs may have had some minor effect on evolution in this way. There are many things that could similarly be considered evolutionary effectors in this way, such as meat eating, trade, and fishing. Though I doubt that hallucinogenic drugs had anywhere near the effect on evolution that those three did. If you are making an argument that hallucinogenic drugs have had an indirect effect on evolution then you could also make an argument that the discovery of the pain reducing effects of willow bark had a similar effect. Neither one probably had much real influence on evolution.

yes, or take some code and modify it.

In my opinion if it doesn’t hit us in the next 50-100 years' date=' assuming that our technology will continue to grow, then we will be able to change its path before it hits earth. So if humanity is wiped out but small mammals survive then I think the chances of another intelligent species evolving are very good. Mammals are well adapted to evolve into intelligent species because of their regulated body temp, 4-chambered heart, live birth, etc. I would give a random guess of a new intelligent species evolving within 125 millin years.

Actually I find it very disturbing that the two parties and the corporations have so hijacked the politics in this nation that no other parties are heard. I think there should be at least one debate where the democrats and Republicans must confront some of the candidates from the other parties.

Awesome. Thanks for the links guys.

Some neo-nazi has claimed that I miscalculated. Can one of you guys check this to make sure I did not make an error? His calculation. According to the Merck Index, dozens of conversion tables and as many online sources that I could find I have come to the conclusion that Zyklon B (Hydrogen Cyanide or HCN) was sold in tins that containd 1.134kg of HCN. According to the Merck Index, above 25 degrees celsius HCN readily forms the gas. According to the Merck and other sources, the lethal concentration of Zyklon B or HCN needed to kill within minutes is 300 parts per million (ppm) which is in fact 300mg per liter of air and because of its vapor pressure, it can easily attain this. The shipments of Zyklon B to Auschwitz/Birkenau were 7.5 tons (1942), 12 tons (1943) and 6 tons (1944) for a total of 25.5 tons of Zyklon B (HCN).I found a few sources but it seems the Dachau gas chamber was 24'x18'x6' and others were about the same being 20'x20'x6'. Using the smaller (which is not in a revisionist's favor), you get 2400 cubic feet which translates to 67968 liters of air in each gas chamber. In a 20'x20' room, an extremely generous estimate of 400 people, that is 1 person per square foot would be the max that could fit. The volume of 400 people that are about 70kg average would be about 50L per person, thus 50L x 400 = 20 000L, so now the total room air volume is 67968-20000 = 47968 Liters. In order to obtain the 300ppm to kill people, for the 47968L number would be 14.39kg of Zyklon B. 14390000mg/47968L = 300ppm. So now we have 14.39kg per gassing. If 1 ton = 907.185kg, then there are 50.4 gassing per ton of Zyklon B, for a total for 25.5 tons of 1285.2 gassings. Thus using the very generous number of people I have given of 400 people per gassing x 1285.2 gassings = 514080 people gassed. NOT 1 MILLION and definately not 4 million. If we were to be realistic, the 400 people would be brought down to 180-200 per gassing giving only 231336-257040 people.Which again shows their numbers don't add up and the whole thing is fabricated and a lie. My calculation: You have made a critical error in your calculation. I have indicated the error in bold. You have used a calculation for parts per million that only applies to water. The reason this calculation works for water is because one millimeter of water weighs one gram. It doesn’t work for any other milligram/litter parts per million calculations because the solute doesn’t weigh 1 gram per millimeter, including air. The parts per million to mg/m cubed is represented by this equation: C (mg/m3) = C (PPM) x MW / 24.45. So if I have 300 PPM I multiply x the molecular weight of HCN which is 27.081 then divide by 24.45. This gives me 332.28 mg/ m cubed. Given that there are 1000 liters per m cubed there would be .3322 mg/liter of HCN to give an exposure of 300 PPM. Assuming that you have not made any more errors and taking your value of 47,968 Litters for the amount of space to be filled it would require 15,939 milligrams for 300 parts per million. This is only 15.93 grams and .0159 kgs. Again, using your value of 200 people per gassing and 25.5 tons of zyklon b that would be enough gas to kill 326 million people. Thanks in advance. I know this is a tedious calculation.

College Applications- What gets the Goods?

Art, writing, music, film--totally up to you of course. Don't do anything you dislike. Find something you really like and then find some way to express yourself so that you can impress University Admissions people. But true creativity will not flow only to impress other people. BTW, if you really did all this then you could not only get into UoM you could get into practically any school with a scholarship. -
This is a difficult question because A) most of us are not doctors or psychiatrists and B) we have been given very little information to go on. But hey I'll give it a shot anyway. First of all, when someone has two serious mental conditions like Bipolar and Schizophrenia its usually quite disabling. However, since she has been off of medication now for 6 years, and I'm assuming she didn't spend that time in an institution, I would imagine she is at least able to function. The answer to your question about whether it is possible to maintain a healthy relationship with someone that has been diagnosed with this these disorders (ignoring adhd because it is not important unless it compounds the other two) is yes. But is it possible for you to maintain a healthy relationship with the person you are talking about--I have no idea. Even in mental disorder each person is different than another. Some people can have brief periods of schizophrenic symptoms that mysteriously clear up and they never have another problem again. Some people have stretched out periods of normalcy than suddenly one of their periodic episodes of schizophrenia will occur. Some people have recurring episodes of schizophrenia. Some people are just seriously messed up all the time and some can be quite dangerous. The symptoms of schizophrenia are visual and auditory hallucinations and paranoid delusions. Use google to get a full list Alot of people with schizophrenic can be helped with anti-psychotics and most of their symptoms will disappear. However, these drugs often have unpleasant side effects. These drugs will sometimes numb people’s minds so much they become like zombies. But some people don’t have bad side effects at all. There are a few different kinds to try out as well. Bipolar is of course a different disorder than schizophrenia. Some of its sufferers have short periods of alternating mania and depression while other people have long periods of mania followed by long periods of depression. People who get in relationships with someone with bipolar disorder often meet them during a period of mania and are attracted to their manic energy. The most common form of medication for bipolar is Lithium. Lithium helps them establish a balance. Lithium is a pretty good drug; it can work well. In fact, alot of people without bipolar would like to get their hands on lithium. There is no way to tell how well these drugs would work on her now without trying them out. It is very important in this case to find a good psychiatrist. I'm assuming this girl has been having problems because otherwise you would not be asking this question. The very first thing she needs to do is to visit a psychiatrist to get reevaluated. She is probably scared to go but they can't force her to take her medication and they won't try to lock her up unless she is dangerous. Now whether you want to stick with this girl is your choice alone. You might have a tough road ahead of you if you do. In my opinion there is no need for you to take on this responsibility, especially at such a young age. This may be one of your first serious relationships and you are unable to get perspective. But love is blind at any age. There is no way to truly answer your question about a healthy relationship without more information and only trial and error would give you real answer. But don't keep this relationship going when it becomes obvious it’s not good for you. BTW I am not a doctor and I am just some random guy on the internet so you might want to ignore everything I just said. Good Luck.

It seems rather noble to try it on yourself before experimenting on others. However there is another side to the coin. Perhaps the drug should be tried on someone that is desperately ill before wasting a good mind that could save many people in the end. But I’m a freak. I think I will probably test a small amount of any drug or bio-pharmaceutical that I make after animal testing to make sure I will not be killing anyone.

College Applications- What gets the Goods?
LucidDreamer replied to MolecularMan14's topic in Science Education
I would suggest joining a group related to your chosen major in college. If you want to be a chemistry major then join the science or chemistry club. Amnesty international is a good one. You might also join Habitat for Humanity. But honestly there isn't alot of need. The three clubs you have plus a good score on the SATs plus your high GPA should make getting into University of Michigan a given. It's if you were trying to get in a school like MIT that is a bit trickier. . If you are really this ambitious then I suggest studying for your SAT now. Get a book on SAT vocabulary; you can start there. Don't forget to have some fun and don't take life too seriously. Oh, I almost forgot. Do something creative. This looks really good because it makes you appear well balanced. But make sure you take up something you will enjoy -
Tyranosaurus and chickens--missing link
LucidDreamer replied to Martin's topic in Evolution, Morphology and Exobiology
So what's the consensus on this one Martin? Are feathers a common morphological feature that has arisen more than once or was feathers a feature from an early ancestor to both birds and this tyrannosaurid? Of course those fossil imprints look a little like compressed conifer leaves to me. -
Just drink a large amount of soda on an empty stomach and don't let it out until you want to let out the big belch. You might add a little live brewers yeast to the soda for extra effect. Don't subject you body to anything more dangerous than that.

Ahh, the fruits of a successful marketing plan.

You Brits are fickle fans. We vilified the leader of an Arab country (admittedly he was already a villian) and claimed he had weapons of mass destruction. Then we went in and kicked butt and captured him. Now he is eating cookies and writing poetry in U.S. custody. Isn't that enough to interest you?
