I'd say if anything, we have evolved away from psychic or sensory abilities. As we have learned to control our environment, we depend less on our senses. Animals have are much more in tune with nature and seem to know how we are feeling, weather, etc. I would say dolphins probably have more ""psychic" ability than we do.

I think Life begins at conception and there is intrinsic worth at that point. There is potential - human potential, not pig or Ebola, but human potential. Obviously, the worth increases with age. Just because life begins at that moment, doesn't mean it is wrong to destroy that life. In my opinion, until this life can grow independently, the woman has the right to destroy that life. The right to destroy the life lies in the keeper of the womb. I think it wrong to do so carelessly, but unless I can become the keeper of the womb or the fertilized egg with no inconvenience to the original keeper, I have no say in the matter.

I've seen this discussed before, not sure if it was on this website or not. Basically, with a book large enough like the bible, you can find anything you want with this technique and it should work with any language.

Origins of life on Earth
john5746 replied to LucidDreamer's topic in Evolution, Morphology and Exobiology
I would say D - God created life, then he made it look like evolution, to fool most people, thus condeming them to hell, except a few very smart fundamentalists! Seriously, (B) Rare, relative to the size of the Universe. -
Possible two single mothers decide to be celibate and want to declare their bond to be a family. I can't see this happening either, but sounds like sex is the basis of marriage?

Some of the threads concerning Gay marriage got me thinking about this topic. I support gay marriage and can easily distinguish this from polygomy, bestiality, etc. What about two heterosexual men(women) who want to be married? Is a profession of love a requirement for marriage? Monogomy? What's your opinion?

Nail Biting, pencil chewing, thumb sucking are probably related to the suckling response. Of course, babies with a strong suckling response are going to have a better chance at survival. When you feel anxiety, you feel relief from suckling. The nurture side of the equation is how society, parents and the person view the habit and the willingness to stop doing it.

I think this is usually the case as new generations demand more freedoms within a society. But, when that society fails(Greeks) or is transported(Puritans), they seem to go backwards.

Another Evolution Question
john5746 replied to Mikel's topic in Evolution, Morphology and Exobiology
Does creationism obey any laws? If the laws aren't important for that theory, why must they be obeyed for any other theory anyway? -
Well, I have some reading to do. I base my statement on Marx on his life. He wanted war and revolution He was a racist and anti-Semite (even though he had Jewish heritage) Couldn't make a living for himself or his family Didn’t clean himself or his surroundings very well His ideas sound good and I know that Capitalism has major drawbacks. But, capitalism will never die because it is in the nature of man. People work for themselves and their family first. No revolution or war needed. Speaking of communism, Stalin committed the worst atrocities of WWII. The reason I picked Hiroshima is the similarity with terrorist events (very sudden, no warning) and is looked upon very differently between Americans and Japanese. I heard someone on the radio bring up this point: If twenty terrorists were found to be in a New York building with 300 civilians, should we bomb it? If the same thing happens in Iraq what is the answer?

Marriage brings many benefits: Child custody, ownership rights, insurance reductions, tax benefits, etc. Also, I guess some want their union to be seen as more legitimate. Marriage also brings benefits to society and that is one reason for government to support it. Some would say that social engineering is not a role of government, but I say that it is a chief role of government. Forcing marriage would of course be a different issue, just as forcing gays not to marry. Society is changing, but slowly. Gay marriage is a question of when, not if.

I'll just shoot them. karl marx? a complete loser as is his philosophy. I must admit I don't understand the romans part Humans are animals with a big brain. In groups we are easily swayed into the pack mentality "us" vs "them". We can be very good to "us" and be very bad to "them" and have no problems with it whatsoever. This can be observed all the time anywhere.

A New Theory for the Origins of Life
john5746 replied to a topic in Evolution, Morphology and Exobiology
Just looking at my yard: It gets more and more complex all by itself. I try to keep it simple and nice, but it's a battle. -
Yes, I contradicted myself. Imperialism springs from human nature, especially if you live on a small island... Any group of people, given power will be tempted to overtake others, sometimes with good intentions. Europeans didn't invent it, they were just very good at it.
-
No doubt, Japan killed millions, Stalin & Hitler killed millions. Lots of killing in this time period. Japan became imperialistic as a direct result of conflict with Europeans. They realized the "old" ways of keeping to themselves would always keep them weak. They were doing the same thing Europeans had been doing for years. Thankfully, somebody was there to stop them. Still, we seemed to have an easier time killing Japanese as opposed to Germans. We locked them up in our country and dropped atomic bombs on them. Some of this was due to cultural differences, some just outright racial bigotry. What I hope we learn from history is that any government, if unchecked, will eventually commit atrocities in the name of God, Country or "the children". It is patriotic to question your government, even during war.

Are Heterosexuals inherently Homo-Phobic
john5746 replied to bloodhound's topic in Psychiatry and Psychology
I remember seeing something about a study of straight men watching gay porn. The men that had the largest increase in penil growth recorded the most homophobic behavior. I'll try to find out if it was actually proven to be the case. It could be that men who are tempted that way are the most aggressive against it. A defensive mechanism? -
Sexuality, like other functions, probably have a genetic and nurture component. Some people have a tendancy towards homosexuality or bisexuality, which can be triggered or possibly supressed. Fruit flies and other animals are studied for many genetic components. Why not study them for this trait?

Very good posts! Yes, Russia probably would have become more involved in the Japanese conflict and may have gotten Japan or the Northern part. That is why I said Japan may be better off because of the bomb dropping, but in light of your post, maybe it was completely needless. When I was in Japan, I felt the bombing was justified. After 911, I came to the conclusion that it was wrong. I do think the Japanese govt is to blame also, at least for Nagasaki, because they didn't surrender after Hiroshima. Many Americans condemn atrocities in Vietnam, but WWII is all rosy on our side. I guess because we won and the war was justified. When is the killing of civilians a terrorist act? When is it not a terrorist act? Maybe, as mentioned previously it is up to the victor.
-
Well, that is where I am getting at I guess. Japan made a preemptive attack on a naval base because we were helping China and they saw us as an imminent threat. They did warn us, although not in the best manner. In 2003, we see Saddam WMD’s as a threat and attack. If Iraq had set off a nuclear device in the US in an attempt to end the war, would this be justified? In my opinion, if the war had dragged on, Japan and America would probably be the worse for it. Do the ends justify the means?

The bombing of Hiroshima, killed at least 100,000, not to mention birth problems in later generations, etc. Compare this to Terrorist activities, such as Hamas. Of course the first was a formal war, but I think everyone is aware that they are under attack in the latter case. Civilians are killed in both instances. To justify Hiroshima, we said to save soldiers lives, not that we couldn't win. Terrorists are usually in a winless battle anyway, like a last resort in their minds. What is your opinion?

Your belief is fine outside of a scientific debate, just as many of the religious beliefs are OK. Just don't try to prove it, you will be disappointed. We seem to yearn for beings more powerful than ourselves. I guess to explain all the random crap we cannot control.
